Macross Series question

I saw a clip on youtube a bit ago from Macross F with the nya nya song, and i want to watch it, but i see there is quite a bit prequels before it while i don't mind watching them all in order. I was wondering if i could in theory watch Macross F right away or do the series go in order, and you need to watch the previous series in order to understand the next season?

They explain what happened in the previous entries in one episode. Even if they didn't, it takes place several years into the future so previous entries are almost irrelevant. There is a huge reference to macross zero but you aren't missing a lot if you don't watch it.

Each macross anime is largely self-contained and character crossover is minimal so you can watch it without watching the others, however you may miss some of the references but that's about it.
I highly recommend SDF Macross/Macross Do you remeber love? since it's a masterpiece and a classic.

All Macross series can be watched as standalone titles. BUT, I do NOT recommend watching any of them until you have at least seen "Macross: Do You Remember Love?" While each Macross title takes place in a different time, they all are part of the same universe, and watching the original SDF Macross + DYRL will make you appreciate the future titles way more. You can watch Macross F by itself...but I am strongly against that. If you want to watch Macross F and get the full experience out of it, it is MANDATORY that you watch DYRL beforehand. Don't listen to anyone else that says otherwise!

I tried the 1st series years ago, but I couldn't stand it at all. Your guide inspired me to give the franchise another chance. Thank you! Do You Remember Love is a great movie, and I will definitely be watching more Macross in the future.
