The show has some changes that they kind of "rewrote" you can say compared to the manga, for better or for worse there's lots of opinions on that. Regardless I absolutely love the show! It made me a bit emotional not going to lie.

I'm gonna check it out sometime in the future because I'm also interested in the changes. The anime was the biggest piece of crap I've ever watched. Only anime yet that I consider truly appalling (so many unlikable characters, stupid 'story'). Even if the changes aren't to my liking, at least I'm gonna get to look at some more Kentarou Yabuki stuff so at least there's that. :P

original anime usually will have a manga too to maximize profit of the production committee and usually original anime are multimedia franchise so it also can have video games, merchandises, light novels and ye manga, etc

Basically, this is a dumbed down version of the whole fairy tale Trigger tried to tell with Darling in the FranXX. The symbolism is twisted and lessened, the twists seem more "popular" rather than necessary to provide a message, as they were in the original. Others claim the character development is better seen in this format. But overall, you lose nothing by not going after this comics when you have finished the animated series, but if you have not you will see just something else.

The manga came out after the show. So, yes, the show itself is an original series by Trigger.

With the anime, I found they did the opposite of what the book did...

For example:

This happens quite a lot with the anime opposing the manga

I don't remember the lore from the anime, but wasn't it implied that their mechas could transform? In the anime we only see 02's mecha transforming, but I remember that once I opened a random chapter and I think I saw another mecha transformed (it was Genistas I googled it). Did they develop anything on that?

In the anime, Hiro and Zero Two sacrifice themselves to destroy the VIRM planet and save the future of their friends and planet, and they are reincarnated into human children 1,000 years later. Whereas in the manga, they survived the final battle and swore to be together forever.
