DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Just as I was thinking about how much I love the nearly silent comradery of Gai and Ishihara and how cool it is that these two formed an alliance out of necessity and their strong wills, Gai suggested that Ishihara escapes with rope. I was heartbroken, I was under the impression that he was telling Ishihara to do what he did and climb the wall excluding the part about it being an island. My understanding was that Ishihara would climb the wall, have nowhere to go, and then be used as a decoy as Gai would take advantage of the situation to get by. So obviously, I was grateful that Gai seem to be honest in helping Ishihara. He believed that this was a peninsula and there should be mountains to escape by. In fact, later he stated that things should be different now that Ishihara “escaped”. And beyond that, I think it shows compassion on Gai’s part, it wouldn't be that hard to carry around a rope and doing so would allow him to escape. He could have hidden the rope with him to trick the guards too. He really did look out for Ishihara’s interest here. In a similar way to when Ishihara looked out for Gai when the director wanted to have a solo lesson. That said, although grateful, a part of me would have liked Gai to do something so shocking, it would be interesting to have that kind of a protagonist. One of my first big questions was regarding how Gai I knew that there would be a door in the storage closet. All I could think was how lucky they were. However, he was ahead of me and had a good deduction as to why that would be the case. I do feel the guards taking so long to decide to go around to the one exit that these kids could use felt too convenient. But, that's a small thing who really cares? I definitely found it interesting that when Ishihara went to use the exit it mimicked another scene written by Fukumoto from the manga Confession, both of which have somebody climbing up a ladder with the one exit above them unaware if they can even open it or the time of day. So that was charming to see again. After hiding to restore his energy, Gai was perceptive enough to recognize there would be two guards left and he took the initiative to get some clothes, he will need to find the tape to prove his innocence, and he's using the guards clothes to help him with that. Walking around naked would be way too obvious, that said, he is young and he has a scar on his face. Even in the brief time that people may be unaware that he took one of the guards outfits, it should still be difficult and I presume he'll have to keep his distance. At the very least, since he had that shounen-esque training and super strength, I think he'll be able to take down any small groups, maybe even take their guns. Unfortunately the days of naked Gai are over, but he does look slick in that new outfit. |
