----------------------------------------
We heard from the director what this practice is, it breaks them down and remolds them into “straight rods”. We saw it happen, it was disgusting. Disgusting in an incredible way. Like animals, they didn't even realize they could stand… I felt sick reading this! The director was crying as if he believed what he was saying, after locking these children in such an awful environment and treating them like animals for like a month, he finally tells them that he loves them and that they are strong. He set it up like it's a big accomplishment for them to become humans following this path. And they bite, stockholm syndrome at its worst, he put them in this situation to begin with and they're treating him like a savior. As Gai said, they're handing their lives to him, it's what he wanted. And like I said, the director crying so intensely made me feel like he did believe what he was saying which added another layer of disgust to this scenario. It was pretty remarkable, I think I felt something that I hadn't felt in another text before. It's hard to put into words, but slowly seeing the director breaking down into more and more tears as he hugs a child he just tortured and the child hugs back and they all start pouring in, the realization of the scenario and what was happening got worse and worse until I felt revulsion. I must applaud Fukumoto for that.

When Gai realized what was happening, I was partly grateful but also partly worried, I said out loud, “this is not the time to fight, go and hug him Gai!”. Yet, after feeling so awful I ended up bursting into laughter, Gai refused and him and Ishihara ran out the door butt naked in the moment they were off guard. That panel where they are leaving the room is incredible for no context purposes, and although the scenario is intense, the absurdity of it got me laughing. Where they will go from here should be interesting though.. The guards must need a way to get back home so there must be some way to get out of here.. I don’t want to forget about Abe’s contact information either!

As for the discussion about if a human is born a human, it reminded me of Kurosawa. There's a line that is somewhat similar about how a human cannot just survive, they have to do more than that, they have to give their all and ‘live’. And interestingly, I find Kurosawa and Kaiji’s Tonegawa have connections with their ideas on what it means to be a human, and here the director’s speech turned into one similar to Tonegawa’s speech in Kaiji! The notion that a human needs to work to be a human is one that can be argued for quite confidently, the execution of the director's means however is questionable at best.

When he asked if the kids had role models I immediately thought of Luffy, hehe. I don't necessarily agree with his definition of a role model, and in fact one of the character traits that he mentioned was being benevolent, something that I do not think the director is himself. However he clearly thinks that he is, that these punishments are necessary and he is doing it for the good of these kids. So, unfortunately he is the kind of person that cannot be argued with over this.
