----------------------------------------
I bet that analysis of the text they were reading in the beginning will be a metaphor of some kind for something in the manga. For the sake of easily going back to it I will quote it here, “His kisses tasted of hungry desire. I felt tears rolling down my face as kissed me, tasted them in my mouth; the hot bitter tears of anger and humiliation” and “Kazuko’s conflict in the novel centres on the fact that she had once wished very much to bear the man's children, a fact that she now deeply regrets”. Of course, I loved Hongou throwing him the ball there, and it was interesting to see how little she was focussed on this chapter. Only really getting this scene and the one in the text chat, which I would like to mention something regarding. I think the way that text chats are done in this is quite good, to show those cute panels of Hongou’s face overlapping the text is charming. Having Yamagishi’s name’s origin not be the illustrious and beautiful origin that Hongou thought, but rather the name of the drink is also charming. That is how most usernames go.

What was quite striking was that Momoko got her first solo scene in my recollection. It was small, but it showed that she was truthful about going to prep school and it set up her own plot thread. But before that, the scene itself had me laughing incredibly hard. “Um… no”, “Um… no”, “Um... no”. She’s certainly more reserved when alone and with strangers. As for the boy, he gives me bad vibes. To say that he went to her Public School when she doesn't remember him, and to have that same fake-feeling smile so exaggerated that we get a “grin” to go along with it, makes me think that he has ulterior motives and it's a lie. So, I am glad that Momoko didn’t go along with it.

Interestingly for Sonezaki, I hadn't realized that the magazine tips were from the model Amagi said she looked like. However what I did think was that the model looked like Sonezaki! Disconnected from his words I made the same observation, I'm glad the art allowed for that. That itself makes this all the more important. We saw that she started today dazed and out of it and last chapter had Amagi on her mind too. His words really got to her and that’s why she probably checked out Erika’s article in the magazine. At the end it teased us that she got all dressed up like Erika does! She’s probably happy to be seen as pretty, something I’d imagine she didn’t think of herself as, and she probably wants to live up to Amagi’s expectations. It looks like its working and it means next chapter should be great.

Now, what I’d consider the core of this chapter, the connecting thread through Kazusa’s experiences. First the talk with her and Sugawara! Kazusa feels guilty for only thinking about herself even though I think her later actions, taking the dvd, perpetuate this idea. She’s also confused about the line between love and desire and yet again Sugawara came in with wisdom for Kazusa. This time it wasn’t on finding out if you love someone but instead, it was an example. The way I took her words was that Kazusa likes an aspect of chicken, she desires to eat it packaged and clean, but she doesn’t love everything that has to do with it(e.g. gore and raising). To love chicken she would have to want and appreciate all of it. Sugawara is wise and I take it that she’s probably somewhat privy to what’s going on in Sonezaki and Hongou’s heads too.

After that Kazusa wanted to separate Izumi from her feelings of love or desire, she wanted to cut off her thoughts of es ii cross and see Izumi abstracted from that stuff. This is an idea I found appealing, specifically to try and abstract someone from the lens you see them in and the feelings you have. To see them in a pure or “real” sense. That said, that feels impossible, I think one must confront their feelings rather than negate them like Sonezaki tried to do so strongly in the past. Anyways, I totally found this sequence poetically beautiful! She, on a journey to forget about es ii cross, goes into Izumi’s house and is ordered to go to his room. Within it she immediately shows her trauma, remembering in great detail the exact porn he was watching, that kind of thing would stick with you. And further, to rub things in, she finds a Totoro-like dvd she and Izumi would watch as kids and she is ecstatic, it represents the simple days when they were amazing friends before all of these adult feelings came in and everything got complicated. It means that part of him is still there, he still watches it! But… when she opens the dvd that represents their childhood and their innocence what sits inside is the porno he was watching. What a literal way to show these feelings have polluted and infiltrated their past and innocence.

To make it even better, she ran out to Momoko who then explained her thoughts on es ii cross. She started this trying to negate her feelings and reject them and twice in a row she faced them. In Izumi and Momoko, so she goes home and changes strategies, she asks for the elder wisdom. Which leads to talk of blood, pain, ten hours, and a baby. I love her family, they love each other so much. That scene was adorable, especially the sleeping part.
