----------------------------------------
Big first chapter, one that explored quite a lot. Normally I like to read manga because I can read it in smaller doses and digest it better than anime but here that was not the case. However, I liked it! Starting with a literature club meeting and a reading of some erotic literature to give us a feeling of how they all understand these adult feelings leading to a pretty organic discussion to explore each of the girls in the club.

Sugawara and Hongou seem to rival each other on how they can confront sexuality where the other three are incredibly nervous about it, Sonezaki rejecting any actual sexuality and justifying why it can be in literature, definitely feeling repressed. Sugawara was the one initially reading, quite confidently too, and she saw something romantic in the text, later of course with that great sequence, she is the one who said she wanted to have sex before she dies. She’s tackling these feelings directly. She is quiet but elegant and popular, boys love her, and Kazusa and Mocchin totally don’t understand why she stays with the “heap of trash”. Hongou on the other hand is trying to write some erotic literature and exploring sexuality through some adult chats she shouldn’t be on, she is totally unphased when addressing this kind of stuff. However, she isn’t overtly mesmerized by sexuality like perhaps Sugawara is. She’s mysterious as Kazusa put it and I like her. That cat mug she had was great and the way she teases and butts heads with Sonezaki is funny. I also like how she seems to be a bit of a quiet loner but she rocks it by shamelessly stomping through the hallways, not looking around and writing in her notepad.

I would say Mocchin was the least explored so far but I liked her inclusion, she was the one pouring the tea, and although not incredibly loud she seems supportive. Like a good friend! Empathetic and expressive too! As for Kazusa, she is so relatable. Bullying sucks, kids can be cruel, and although I got better at standing up for myself when I got older, I totally acted like she did back then. She had to deal with having a little brother childhood friend grow up and she is conflicted with her feelings and the way she gets bullied from jealous girls. To the point that she can hardly face him anymore despite him reaching out to her so much. The half answer she gave when Izumi asked her if he shouldn’t talk to her in public broke me!!! But it wasn’t all sad, the way she got over the dark times in middle school and found a place to belong made me tear up, especially in Mocchin’s shared feelings. Heck yeah!!

Two other small things, I like how the glares from bullies takes a dark, physical manifestation and I loved the decision to have both Kazusa and Izumi walking side by side as they grew up until Izumi blasted past her. Topknot!!!
