So I know very little about this series. I've heard about it in passing, seen some cross-promotion with another game I played (but never paid the money to get the Azur Lane stuff), watched the trailer for the anime, and read the long thread about it.

For those who are familiar with Azur Lane, what's the vibe of this series? I really liked shows like Arpeggio of Blue Steel (was really hoping the feel woud e more in line with this show) and Girly Air Force. Would you say it's more like these, with the characters being more biological bridged with technological, or more like Hettalia, with the character representing historical elements?

Im kinda on the fence about this show. Will probably give it a try, but trying to figure out if I should be getting my hopes up or not.

We have no way of knowing what the anime is going to be like until it is actually released. It could be comedic, it could be serious, or it could be a mix of both like Kancolle. Based on the previews, I think it will probably be more on the serious side of things.

In the game, the characters represent warships and they use smaller riggings to fight rather than actual big ships, so it is like Kancolle if you've seen that. Never seen Hetalia so I can't compare it to that, but I believe it is the same sort of thing.

However, the anime may be different. In the trailer they showed a lot of actual warships, so the anime might deviate from the game and be more like Arpeggio where the girls control the real warship.

What's the difference?

Let me clarify.... I'm less asking about the category of show, I truly don't care if it's humorous or serious on the front end, and more curious about what some of the world building elements are. For example, at one point in the trailer one of the characters is shooting a pistol that looks like a 5-inch gun shrunk down. It threw me off a bit on what the source material was like.

I never watched Kancolle but might check it out in advance of this. Probably just didn't make it on to my radar at the time.

As I said, in the games, the characters use smaller versions of their riggings and do not control actual warships like they do in Arpeggio. I might have missed the trailer you're talking about, but in the trailer I saw, the actual warships featured prominently and they showed the girls standing on the ships, so that was why I was saying they might change it in the anime. If it follows the source material, though, then yeah they'll use shrunk-down versions of naval weaponry.

What's the difference?

Those warships shown are just production-types. The actual characters will be controlling their rigging just like the game, the anime won't be changing that. You can even see it in the most recent PV with some of the Fletcher-class being shown fighting.

To answer the main question of the thread, the characters of Azur Lane are definitely more on the historical side. They are designed after actual warships that served during WWII and certain aspects of their character art and design are based off of tributes those ships famously had. Numerous quotes & relations between characters also reference actual historical events involving their real-life counterparts.

Like Daemon said, if you want a good idea of what AL will be like, go check out Kancolle. AL is literally a Chinese knockoff of KC, after all.

AL and Kancolle are similar but different. Story-wise, AL follow WW2 navy battles like The Battle of Midway and Battle of the Denmark Strait while Kancolle follow the Japan’s campaigns in WWII. Azur Lane have three big organization in the game; Azur Lane (Allies of WW2) which have some Axis country ships, Crimson Axis (Axis of WW2) and the Sirens who destroyed the world once and time travelled to the past because they haven't fulfill their purpose in the future which they destroyed the world... I don't know weather the anime will follow the game-story or not though

I think it's likely that the show will follow the early campaign story and will have Akagi/Kaga be the "main" villains against Enterprise (who is confirmed to be the main protagonist), but the Sirens will most likely play some role in the background and then make a major appearance sometime later. I don't think they'd tease Purifier in a few frames of the latest PV and not show any sirens in the show at all.

I am watching KanColle for the yearly watch challenge at the moment and its cute girls doing war things (CGDWT? lol) I actually am enjoying it more than I thought I would. If its anything like KanColle I will probably give it a shot. Some commented in the KanColle threads about the similarities as well but overall it seems there are enough differences between the two to play/watch both.

The most notable difference between them is that Azur Lane is told from the perspective of the Allies, called "Azur Lane" in this world. The MC is actually the USS Enterprise while Kaga and Akagi (the kitsunes) along with most of the IJN are antagonists.

It's mostly gonna be a fan service anime I'm sure. My expectations is low, but I'm sure I'll still be entertained since I play the game a lot.
