This really is an overlooked gem. It's so layered and I love how there's no preference given to any girl, but all their stories get told little bit by little bit. It's so striking how the author knows how to visit them at just the right moment to reveal the next part of them.

Yeah definitely agreed! I'm so excited for the anime but i was wondering if you've read the raws or anything do you think a love triangle would form between izumi kazusa and her pretty blond friend?
I'm really enjoying the friendship and individual romance so i hope it doesn't turn into another love triangle.

I think I'm about as far as you are. It does look like that might happen between the three of them, but I hope she backs off from that.
This post is a little long so I will spoiler tag it for organizations sake.
This was a big chapter for Sugawara. We finally learnt the context of her complicated relationship with Saegusa and she told Izumi, shockingly, everything. They are definitely getting closer. So as for Saegusa, he did end up feeling as creepy as one would expect with his lines about Sugawara’s young charm. He spotted her out of the crowd of adorable, clueless children and then placed himself below her to get her on his side. But as creepy as he was, he never laid his hands on her, on the flipside she wanted him to. His response wasn’t that he didn’t want to “do it” with her but that he couldn’t, that it would ruin her young girl-like nature. It feels not sexual but emotional and nonetheless unsettling. A fetishization of purity perhaps. This can call back to her earlier conversation with Kazusa in chapter 3 about the young girl in her dying soon and herself with it. Even now she is hung up on Saegusa, pulling Izumi over to him as a fake boyfriend, maybe a way of saying she’s moved on.
Meanwhile surrounding this scene like I suggested was her growing closer with Izumi. She chose to tell him this pretty personal story. Earlier she had said she could understand why Kazusa likes him. Here they bonded over trains in an adorable fashion, Izumi letting out his inner train nerd and Sugawara making a more poetic and profound point about how trains are a collection of people in different states and phases of their lives brought into close proximity. As if they were acquainted like Izumi put it. It was adorable and they had a happy and mutual conversation about their interests, Izumi exploding with the opportunity to let it all out, and right after that scene she pulls him out by his hand and calls him her boyfriend. He notices her shaking, her vulnerability, and he brings it up to her. Seeing a weaker side to her and understanding a moment of her life that has haunted her since. These two have scenes that I like more than Kazusa and Izumi’s and suddenly I’m worried. Their synergy feels real!
But Momoko came to the rescue as if she is the Speedwagon to Kazusa’s Jonathan. Firstly, I loved seeing her yell at Kazusa to not be so down on her luck the second she said she couldn’t beat Sugawara in any way, a truly crushing realization. And then how the two broke down into talking about how awesome Sugawara was in quite the wholesome sense, showing their adorable lack of envy. After that Momoko totally came to the rescue to solve the problem and set Kazusa’s priorities straight, she’s your friend let’s go talk to her about it and have faith in her. Hell yeah, girl!! You are such a strong person! Although I do think her sadness when she can’t help her friends shows she may put too much on herself to look after them because you can’t always do that, further, I hope she does have people to help her too. Sugimoto could be that! But, then again, she’s struggling with the sadly real problem of “does this person want something from me or do they really like me?”, one that always sucks to deal with. A real harbinger of trust issues.
As this happened, Hongou drove by in Yamagishi’s car! We don’t know the exact aftermath of the last scenario, he seemed to deny her but still give her a ride. This was a great little moment, on top of showcasing the great and organic storytelling that captures all of these stories at once, it said a lot about Hongou and it had some interesting implications for Yamagishi. Firstly, Hongou is so powerful normally, speaking her mind and being bold, she feels unstoppable. But she is passionate and emotional, and when she’s vulnerable like she was here, it’s serious. Secondly for Hongou, her line about how she doesn’t know what to do and just connected with an editor to hit her debut was revealing. One of course, there is a conflict here in that her writing needs real experience but her lust wants Yamagishi for other reasons which is an interesting dynamic of desire. The more important side of this is that I had been wondering why she wanted to be an erotic writer but that may have been entirely misguided. I think what is suggested here is that as a highschool girl she could get a debut deal for an erotic text and that is what inspired her, not the other way around. I could be wrong but that’s how I’m reading this so far.
On Yamagishi’s side there is a clear and interesting contrast to Saegusa. There are obvious parallels from a younger girl interested in an older sensei figure to her. In the way both Sugawara and Hongou took ahold of their sensei and put their hand on their chest as a proposition. And in the way they responded. Saegusa told Sugawara he didn’t want to “do her” because he liked her due to her young girl-like charm. Yamagishi is the opposite. On top of being reasonable and not wanting to commit career suicide, his reason is that she is too young. He is interested in older woman and highschool girls are of no interest to him. That said, Saegusa in that situation was composed and clear, Yamagishi feels some confliction and upon making her cry he’s decided to give her a proposal..
Lastly, we got a cute look into Sonezaki’s home life! Kazusa appears to be an only child, Hongou has a big sister from the looks of her when Hongou went out to meet Yamagishi, and Sonezaki was with her grandma here and has a little brother. The scene focused on her becoming more mellow and honestly, I totally get it. She was so explosive in regards to her unacceptance of her adult feelings and she’s starting to understand them and accept them in her own way. It makes sense to calm down. I don’t like the focus on external prettiness too much, I feel it’s too much of a focal point for her, but at the same time I understand desiring to look pretty. I’m just glad Amagi always liked her, even before she got so widely complimented!
The theater guy just confessed to being a whole-ass pedo. I feel like Sugawara was groomed in some way, even though he never touched her. He still spoiled her and made her believe she was the most special girl in the world.
