The current position of the Japanese market is that work for guys is considered the default direction, while work for girls is a separate area. There used to be a time when shoujo animes like Sailor Moon or Maria-sama Mitteru could be financially successful solely due to the popularity of their target audience, but now you can hardly make financially successful anime for girls if it is not able to attract guys. This is one of the reasons why initially female franchises like Eupho (damn, most guys are not even able to understand Takeda's motives), or Marie Okada’s shoujo-ish works, are officially gender neutral. Another reason is that we live in a patriarchal society, therefore, it is much easier for you to attract a variety of people to male content than to female. Think for yourself, what is more likely - a male character from the all-male franchise that will attract a lot of guys, or a female character from the all-female franchise that will attract girls? Not to mention that girls can easily get involved in yuri shiping, but the guys will only be scared by yaoi shiping. As a bonus, you can also remember how many girls write male manga and LN, and how many guys are willing to work for the shoujo and josei audience. Especially josei, which is considered the most feminist genre in the industry and requires a good understanding of female life. |
