Not sure how much I enjoy the new direction Yamamura is taking his work.

Both this and Kaibutsu Gakushou, they seem to be referencing older European works, and don't feel like they can stand on their own as much as his past work could. (If I knew the old European references, that may enhance the experience, but strange medieval creatures and early 20th century ballet aren't things I've had past experience with)

I still enjoy his animation, just not the content.

I loved everything about this animation, especially the messages and wisdoms.

"What is man?", was my favorite segment.

I would like to see more ballet anime, or even better an opera anime. This particular effort was silly but not quite silly enough to capture the spirit of Parade. Part of it might be that it's not as surprising to have stuff like typewriter sound effects in a cartoon as it would be at the ballet, idk

It looked cool and everything, but every time there was text on screen I had no idea what they were talking about.

I believe the text on the screen are quotes from Erik Satie's essays. If you read the background text under the sypnosis it says, "Mixing quotes from Satie’s essays with the music performed by a Dutch jazz band, the Willem Breuker Kollektief, this film is an animated re-creation of "realist ballet" images going beyond reality.".

I want to sleep...

hmmm maybe I should give those essays a read and then rewatch this so that I can gain a better appreciation for this piece

Not sure what to think of this. The director must love early 20th century art forms, there were many references to pick up from early cinema to visual arts, 20s dances, cubism and surrealism, Miró and Klee. Because a lot of the art in question, while well-known for its historical value, isn't exactly popular today, this felt at the same time avant garde and historical. But the end result was confusing and I was left wondering whether there was a deeper point to all these images that didn't seem to fit together.

While some of the things were pleasing to the eye, and others were interesting, like transformations which are a staple of short avant garde anime pieces, I didn't like the result all that much. And since I'm not even sure whether there was a message to judge, I'll just leave with the gut feeling that it was slightly unpleasant to watch.

I don't have much to say about this other than that it was interesting. I will rewatch this later someday.

I liked the "What is man?" segment.
