I didn't necessarily think the anime was bad, but considering the high amount of characters we had to focus on, I feel like 12 episodes was way too short a time. We didn't spend enough time with any of the characters to get particularly attached to them, especially with only a very small look into their backstories.
Would the light novels be more worth reading?

The anime only adapted arc 1 of its 8 (volume 1 of 10 and counting)

The anime is basically just the prologue

As for the how faithful it is to the source, well they say it is, I didn't really read arc 1 I just continue where the anime left off, but ofc despite the fanbase saying it is faithful, there are still some very noticeable changes where they don't like it for ex.

Yes, read the LN, continue to volume 1.5 (Snow White Raising Project) that's where the anime kinda left off

"Basically the whole anime is just an epilogue"
you mean the story's prologue (epilogue is the end of the story :D).

But yeah, that's what the anime series is. The high amount of character is not focused on because only characters that survive the prologue are important in the story (and are focused on afterwards), anyone else is fodder to begin with.

Anime is relatively faithful to the first arc IIRC, except that it's changing thing's orders a bit (which makes several deaths far more predictable than the novel's version).

I disagree that we didn't spend enough time with any of the characters to get particularly attached to them. I remember that I cared a lot in different ways for basically all of them, except Shizuku, Nana, and the angels, that are boring characters, in my opinion. I found even Magicaroid 44 an interesting character.
Many of them, if not all, even received extra scenes that weren't in the novel. Nemurin just existed to be the first one to die in the novel, without any explanation about her personal life, that she had in the anime, though just her adorable artwork in the novel was probably enough to make the reader feel bad for her death. The fight of Cranberry against Souta, though it did occur, wasn't shown in the novel, and Alice only fought against Calamity Mary in the anime, which was a really nice addition, since it let us know how invincible Alice was as a mahou shoujo.
And it was a battle royalle, anyways, in which it makes sense for the ones that die first to have less "screen time" than the ones that are the last survivors.
