They chose the worst animation for the last ep. Like why?
Story-wise, it's a nice note to end on. I DID expect to see their reunion with their parents after all that fuss, so sucks we didn't get that much. But it ending with Scott saying they'll always be Thirteen made me smile. I do hope they see Katue and Jimmy sooner than say 5+ years. I'd like them to grow together and truly be thick as thieves.
That said, character time.
Roddy gives me weird vibes throughout these last few eps; it feels like he's deciding for Katue and trying to force his opinion onto her. Instead of actually listening to her and hearing what her actual opinions. Tbh, he comes off as a horrible communicator since it never seems his listening to the other person beyond what he wants to hear. So I'm not too surprised she ignored him and left behind Roddy's back.
But I'm glad she made her own decision and stuck with it. I didn't like her at first, but she grew on me in the end. Unlike... Maki, who I had high hopes for which were dashed. She turned out much worse once they landed, she couldn't fight or never realize the freaking bush was out of place. Kinda sucks since she had potential to be a cool ass pilot but nah, Katue was better. Not by much, but her teamwork with Kents loads better than Maki.
As for everyone else, they grew on me too. Especially Scott. Holy cow, he had the best development out of the cast, growing from a peaceful wimp to a honest Captain to a fighter. I loved watching how he joined in the end in his own way. It even rubbed onto Claire, which was great.
Kents did too thanks to the Kuktonian kid. And seeing his growing friendship with Jimmy is good stuff. I never thought I'd enjoy any scene with him, but Yu created a miracle and Kents likable.
It does sucks Marlo and Lucchina didn't really grow at all. There's all this buildup with them helping out, but after the food fiasco they don't do anything beyond play around and whine about their parents. Jimmy is near their age, iirc, yet did more (despite also not doing very much beyond the constant gag of bringing a cart full of weapons...). Jimmy could have been better since they introduced him being a sharpshooter and proceed to NOT have him join Kents in the mecha like he should have. I know why they put Katue instead, but really Jimmy makes more sense since Katue and Kents didn't really bond. It was always Katue and Roddy.
If anything Katue and Maki should have had their own mecha.
The rest, if I'm honest, don't change much from when they were introduced. Sharon remains the female annoying goof, Pench the reader and housewife (she had nursing skills that only got used twice, sadly), Fred the one you can't listen to because all he does is whine and his voice is ear rape, Bartz is best boy who hangs out Roddy any chance he can get. Sharon and Pench sorta end up as friends, but not really.
What the show did with Mueller was criminal. No ifs, buts about it. I don't think he's dead because there's no explosion and the last person that had a vague ending ended up alive so... Even so, I wanted him to remain alive like Jeda and join the rebels' side in the very end. Idiot stubborn man.
The biggest flaw of this anime would be the lack of bonding scenes between individuals. Like with Digimon Adventure, the cast is put into pairs and more or less sticks to them hardcore. There's times where it deviates, but it almost always feels like it's trying to create romance and thus almost always comes off as awkward and forced. Like with Maki and Bartz; Roddy and Katue. The exceptions are the "rivalry" between Pench and Sharon; Scott joining Roddy and Bartz; Katue with Marlo and Lucchina; Katue and Kents. The bond between the crew could have been better if the show spent more time having the entire cast interact on and off. Not saying they can't have the pairs. They can have that too because I know how difficult it is managing 13 freaking characters + all the side ones. Just that they shouldn't have stuck to them like glue for more than half the anime. Then split them off and try to create new ones with no build-up. Maybe if they didn't have TWO recap episodes they could have done that. Just sayin'.
I feel so sorry for Bogi. Left behind until found. I'm sure the battery'll run out before then though... And I know Bogi is an AI, but every scene with it talking to a dead ship, the cockpit empty and devoid of life, was sad. I sorta wish they told it to self-destruct after they left.
The romance between Roddy and Kate was barf-inducing, so I'm glad she died and the show and Roddy eventually left it behind. Harsh but true. Things got much better without Kate there, in all honesty. It forced them to mature instead of relying on her.
The fights aren't the best. If expecting something like Gundam, I'd say don't bother since the fights are kinda trash lmao. This anime is more about these kids' journey to see their parents and what they had to do to get there which includes fighting. Roddy is the best pilot yet is not near Amuro's level, for instance. So that's the quality of fights you're gonna get; lots of missing and lucky hits.
All in all, I didn't expect much from this anime. But it gave me a lot more in return, enough to earn my like. Plus that OP is too good. |
