Certainly surprising that no one has commented on this film. It's a bid of an odd one that's for sure. Even though it was made in 85, it in some ways feels even older than that. It has a very 70's feel to it. Cannot really put a finger on why, but the soundtrack certainly plays a part.

I wonder why he decided to keep away from everyone, including Julie at the end? His jobs and travels were over by then and there was no family to go back to.

The movie is all over the place, and it felt more like disjoined one-shot adventures than a coherent story.
However, it's nice to see Ainu themes in japanese media. It's a suspect that should be talked about more.

This was sure an interesting film for some of the parts but yet there was something problem that really snatches away for me to make it satisfying overall.

Anyway first the great thing is the creative action scenes and high level of animation style that continued to amaze me throughout its duration and there was always something new in it with every action sequences. And of course the soundtrack was phenomenal and that worth experiencing how it flawlessly matches with the tone of the film's atmosphere giving off 60/70s vibes in 80s film. Also really liked the background arts which were top-notch.

And then my main problem is the overall plot that really left me quite mixed bag. It starts off bit cliche indeed but that problem escalated too high as how later characters killed off in similar manner (makes it more predictable of all most of later fights) especially how Chiomapp died needlessly really started for me to stop caring about the characters anymore. Also on the top of that, I felt the 2nd half were the film is no longer amazing and quite drags and adds more problems. Like how Jiro could talk with foreigners, travelling such cold climate at okay pace and was also kind of bit repetitive and loses suspense of what the first half gave us like Jiro goes to place A to B and meet new people and then goes to B to C etc. I feel like some parts could have cut down and 2 hour was really too much. On the other hand it could easily fix if that was adapted into TV series showing the details of Jiro's struggle during his journey that could been interesting but I really displeased how side characters get killed and not much offers other interesting other characters except Sam. Mark Twain was really out of place dammit!

The music in this film was so...unique. Every Rintaro-directed film/OVA I've seen used jazz/blues (very unusual for anime), now this has a bizarre mix of rock, choir and Japanese flutes? I dig that. Some of the animation cuts were just insane, especially on "dreamy" sequences and fights, even though they were very unrealistic. Truly a classic.

I agree, however I did find the journey pleasant. Though random and bizarre, the narrative redirects to all the disparate locals was quite interesting to say the least. I can see a remake to "write" the wrongs as a 1 cour series. There is a lot of cool parts to it, but it's made nonsensical by a very wonky narrative. Story aside, it has a solid soundtrack and cool art style on display in some of the more dramatic and action packed sequences.

Interesting journey but I do think it dragged on a bit too long, soundtrack really fit well with the movie.
Unique visuals for a movie that came out at the time it did, worked quite well.

Surprisingly good.
