| "53?" "Well yes, but actually no." A classic way to dunk on the Fukumoto genius characters, reminding me of the ways Akagi would face failure in Ten. The stiffness or simplicity of the characters, and the way this series using formula or stakes, and the subject matter being something I can't often feel engaged with creates a sense of stagnation through Zero. At least in games like the Anchor or Witches Curse. This isn't unique to Zero, Gin to Kin felt similar to me as well, it's certainly a pattern in some of Fukumoto's work which doesn't appeal to me. It can lead to indifference as I feel the characters are playing the same old roles, specifically Zero and Yuuki here, and the most I can engage with the game is by nodding my head as I'm told the answers, fearless of success or failure. I am suspended in a vacuum, awaiting new information and ideas that don't feel redundant… This may sound way too harsh, we've only got a couple chapters into the Anchor, I love what it is setting out to do and has already accomplished by making Sakura stronger and exploring his character more. Zero is also about to shake up the current direction with a new plan. I just realized the same feeling I had last arc emerged once again and I wanted to remark on it. |
