| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Okay, I am just going to go on the record by saying that NisiOisiN is a fucking show-off (in a good way). This week's mystery: "I have taken custody of your one million yen, if you ever want to see it again, prepare for me one hundred million." If this doesn't perplex you the instant you read it, I don't know what will. Nisio definitely has a passion for the mysterious and it comes true very clearly with this story. That said, this felt like more of a thought experiment in comparison to the case from the previous chapter. So we are introduced to Kondo this time around, and apparently, he has helped Yakusuke (Yaku bc this is getting tiring) with finding jobs many times in the past. we also have Satoi, the manga artist and the victim of this case, and I have a feeling at least one of them will come back in the future. As always Nisio shows off his convoluted thought process, as I never would've fully pieced together this mystery if it wasn't blatantly stated. (But it's actually kind of creepy how much sense it makes) I like how memory (and also theft?) seem to be major themes among the mysteries of this series, which makes sense considering Kyouko's whole amnesia thing. Though one thing that is alluded to is the possibility Kyouko doesn't remember her past before she got her daily amnesia, which raises the question OF HOW DOES KYOUKO EVEN SURVIVE??? (if that is the case) But I mean, what is she able to retain on a daily basis? How does she remember she is a detective when she wakes up? It's possible I just misinterpreted that last part when Yaku started thinking about this, but there is a lot to unearth about Kyouko's life when Yaku isn't there. Also, I guess this kind of segues into the theory that Kyouko might actually be Hanekawa from Monogatari, but since nothing is confirmed, I can't say for sure. No one knows what kind of past Kyuoko had before she got sick, this series does share the same universe as Monogatari (also Zaregoto and Ningen apparently), and, of course, there are the visual similarities to Hanekawa. If this is true there might just be a way to reverse Kyouko's amnesia if it is caused by an apparition, perhaps something went wrong with Tiger or Sawari Neko apparition, but I am getting ahead of myself. -_- But this does leave me wondering if NisiOisiN is waiting until the end of Monogatari's Monster season to finish Boukyoku Tantei, just so he can reveal this twist at the end... At any rate, great chapter, and I can't wait to see what the next one has to offer. I am still very curious in regards to where Nisio intends to take both Kyouko's and Yaku's characters in the future of this series, and how he can actually pull off development for such inherently static characters... Ah, so that's the meta-narrative this time around, isn't it? |
