The story is about 2 girls in a post-apocalyptic world, but is it really JUST a post-apocalyptic world or maybe something ELSE? Something scarier!

In this world not only humans are nearly all dead, but so are nearly all forms of life, like insects or animals. It is said that there was a big war and everyone died after, but:
1) We never see a single corpse, skeleton on at least some bones.
2) All the tanks, planes or vehicles we see look more like they were abandoned or broken down because of nature and/or time, rather then being destroyed or shot down by humans.
3) There are no bullet-holes on the walls or anywhere, suggesting that no major fight took place where the two girls are.
4) City the girls are in also looks more like it was abandoned or people just vanished there, rather than it was bombed or fight took place in it. They look so hollow that it feels like it's one big decoration rather than a "once functioning city filled with life".
5) It seems that no weapon of mass destruction was ever used here, like an atomic bomb, or perhaps some biological weapon.
6) The world is too calm and so are the characters! Girls are not afraid of things like radiation, landmines, snipers, countless various traps.

Characters in the series sometimes wonder if they're actually dead. Perhaps they really are! The world they live in just so hollow and quiet, yet so peaceful - in a way. Could it be that there is a plot-twist awaiting us at the finale?

By the way, this world so much reminds me of endless laboratories we go through in "portal" games. :)

One of the things that most impacted me was the fact that the buildings are not methodically broken down like in most post apocalyptic setups.
It doesn't seem like nuclear armageddon took place either because there are no signs of radiation.
So it's quite a unique scenery, your theory could be right.
It reminds me of My neighbour Totoro.

I too was wondering about the lack of corpses, signs of mass destruction, and the kind of decay one would expect as the outcome of an annihilation war. But whatever the in-world explanation, I take it to be a narrative necessity: the girls couldn't go on being cute and funny against a background of rotten bodies and other gruesome details. Picture them finding that fish in episode 2 in a lake where you can see human skulls at the bottom. That would be a different genre altogether.

@AzorAhai

A very long long time ago the ancient civilization destroyed itself, and ruined their world-hence no bodies.
The survivors formed a new civilization ,400 odd years before the girls were born.

But that civilization is fading fast,so much knowledge lost,so little food and other resources.

Edit: re-watch the first episodes, and really listen to what the girls have to say about their world.

I was thinking more along the lines of apocalypse, and the good were raptured, but yeah they could the be the not so lucky that are in purgatory.

There is a lot of other things missing as well, like clothes, furniture, doors, windows, etc So I’m not sure if it’s part of the plot or just the deal where studios save on costs by not animating or drawing everything, but copy paste cgi backgrounds.

Genres: Sci-Fi, Adventure, Slice of Life, Mystery
Hmm, perhaps we shouldn't expect much from the series. there's no "drama" in genres, plus it's PG-13.

I suppose the series will revolve around the relationships of the two girls rather than the world around them, but then there's this:
Genres: Sci-Fi, Adventure, Slice of Life, MYSTERY.

I'm hoping for a meaningful ending.

A worldwide biological or chemical attack that wiped out most of the population maybe? Only a handful survived.
