Losing a wife and daughter is very heartbreaking. Koyanagi then saved a woman and her child from certain death. The woman's husband was a thief who he arrested. He then proceeded to help him see his wife. It didn't go well and was in jail for six months. The thief returned back with his accomplice. It's nice of Heizou to forgive Koyanagi. This was a good episode.

Good episode, and a nice look into how humans can be at the same time mercilless, and kind to each other.

Poor Koyanagi.....that was some reckless behaviour.

I think this was one of the best episodes!

Also I wonder if Otaka and Matahachi were reunited at all during those six months he spent chasing his fellow thief.

Weird how Ojun and his son looked no different after the time skip (appearance wise).
Matahachi's daugther almost semmed to grow smaller after the 1 year time skip between the "fateful night" and when Koyanagi met them.

For the last episode I would have liked to see something more Heizo focused or some room for improvement when it comes to his son. Or maybe even another Kumehachi centric case (coming in full circle etc.) but instead it'll be one about Omasa and her former lover? (Not that I wouldn't enjoy learning more about Omasa's past etc. but it just seems strange to choose her character for the last episode)

Don't need episode 13 to tell that 'second season please!'
The anime that truly gives me a traditional Japanese atmosphere. And surprisingly it's politically corrected more than I thought (I support musculinism so this is perfect for me)

I'm really hoping we get a second season. This show is strangely relaxing in a way. for all the drama and fighting involved, there's a sense of family around Heizo and those who surround him. It's like he's everyone's father or big brother.

I'm amazed that this show keeps me guessing... when the first scene was introduced in this episode (let me tell you it was so heartbreaking), then we cut back to the present and when I saw the girl with her child attempting to jump the bridge/suicide and our supporting succeeding in preventing the suicide I tough they would start a family together (healing each other wounds) but boy I was wrong and I’m glad. It was nice to see the show chose another path for his redemption (for not being with his wife & child in her last moment) aiding a dad to stay at by his wife & child side… and him by not dying prematurely like he intended (her wife wouldn’t not have wanted that) thus keeping doing the right things in life (work as an officer of the law & aid people) this was another good episode!

That was another great episode. Those two were truly audacious indeed, and I loved it.

Well, the new case was good but I am disappointed by the lack of a double episode for the final story, after seeing that those last episodes were both from the same tome.

4/5

@Jacksnapp A few years already passed throughout the show and age doesn't really mark the characters, so 6 months are pretty short to do it.

edit @Jacksnapp Then we should hunt for the longest live action series, there the age progression should be seen. ^^ (actually, I think I noticed some more wrinkles on Onihei between the start and the later episodes, but that's all, and yes, the children are the most notably visible victims of this problem)

You're probably right; I just noticed it more this episode and it genuinely bothered me when it came to Matahachi's child...
I agree that these characters aren't really meant to age but I would've appreciated a change of clothing or slightly different hairstyle (especially when it comes to Ojun)

On another note, I also would've liked to see a double episode :)

I don't remember there being a time-skip as far as Matahachi's child is concerned. Otaka had been waiting for her husband to return that night when the old man came to deliver the note. She attempted suicide soon after, I assume, since she was still in the same clothes.

Then I probably got the timelines mixed up; I should probably rewatch it but the child's size and the same clothing you pointed out would make sense in that case

I'm glad Omasa is finally getting some more screentime. She's only had a few episodes so far.

This was a great episode and I really do want a second season. The last episode seems to be just as episodic as the rest of the series, rather than an actual finale.

A man who felt guilty over having let his wife and child die found redemption in helping a man who had to abandon his family due to circumstances. Perhaps as Koyonagi says, it might be the twist of fate but ultimately it was beautiful. Great episode overall.

Another excellent episode!
Onihei really knows that if somebody went wrong on one of his subordinates, it must be because of a certain reason. Being a b0ss also needs thinking outside of the box. And pure gut feeling and instincts that you know already that something is wrong that only you would immediately notice and not other members of the Arson Theft Control.
5/5.

Another brilliant episode. Koyanagi is just a brilliant character, he's honestly just as good as Heizo and Heizo is like top 5 best people in the world. Koyanagi's decision to throw his life for that woman and a child who he saved is unbelievable and not revealing anything when he was in jail knowing he could get executed is amazing. I'm glad that thief came back at the end saving Koyanagi. Now i wonder what would happen to that woman who wanted to suicide.
5/5 realism at it's highest.

It's not very exciting the episode, but it's pretty awkward to leave a certain melancholy in the watching. The plot is quite obvious in the result, the narration remains interesting to follow. Heizo is a great character.

Wow poor Koyanagi, taking one for someone he had blind faith in. Thankfully it paid off

Koyanagi has made peace with his dead wife and child, by helping the a thief's family

He sure had a lot of faith in him, despite being total strangers
