I am currently watching the first Cross Ange Blu Ray (episodes 1-12) and I noticed that there was a "Special Interview" bonus feature. It's nearly 30 minutes long, and includes multiple people involved in the creation of the show. Although it's nearly completely focused about either general things or stuff that happens before episode 12, there's quite a lot of interesting information in there. Here's some of the more interesting stuff:

- Ange was originally planned to be a noble and kind princess for the duration of the entire show, and her role was to be the glue that mellows and brings together the delinquent of Arsenal through the power of friendship and love.

- No mecha show with a female lead has ever been really successful, so they decided to try something entirely different.

- The proposal for bitchy, angry Ange was met with much negativity from the majority of the team. "Who would ever want to watch a show with a lead character like this?" was the common answer. However, the director and producer liked the idea and ran with it, giving the show a protagonist that was unusual and truly had room to grow (Opinion: I'd say it was massive success personally).

- They asked the character designer to draw Ange to be as beautiful as was humanly possible to compensate for her personality. "So beautiful that no one can really hate her". They wanted a woman (Sayaka Oto) to draw Ange, because when a man tries to draw a beautiful woman it tends to look racy, while a woman can bring out the true beauty of the female body. Sayaka stated she added elements of many of the women she found most beautiful, and named Avril Lavigne by name.

- In case you didn't notice, Ange's hair grow throughout the show. When they started production, the character designer cut her hair to be like Ange's. As her own hair grew during production, so did Ange's, and that was used as the guide for Ange's hair length throughout the show (that's dedication!)

- They flip-flopped multiple times between Salia and Hilda as the traitor before settling on Salia. They also considered having Momoka be a traitor, and have her taunt Ange when her sister stabs her in episode 9. They decided against it in the end, figuring that the show could use having at least one pure-hearted character in it.

- They wanted to do the opposite of the many "late night therapeutic shows that are currently airing" (read: moe shows).

- The main theme of the show is that "The only thing you can always rely on is your own strength" instead of the standard "My friends are my strength". Friends are good and all, but there are times where your own determination is the only thing that can carry you forward. Also, (verbatim) "That you have to accept the evilness inheritent in all humans to able to truly understand and bond with them." That's why every character in the show has some hefty flaws, and that to simply overlook (instead of accept) them is a mistake.

- Vivian's voice actress actually did have a candy in her mouth when voicing most of her lines. It supposedly wasn't very easy.

- The core word they used for the show was "dramatic". They wanted to focus on the character interactions and relationships instead of spending a lot of time on story details. The unpredictable storyline progression comes from the fact that life itself is unpredictable, and you never really know what is going to happen the next day; an anime should strive to be the same.

- There's over 70 music tracks created solely for this show (!) and a lot of emphasis was put into it (it shows).

- The controversial cavity search in episode 1 was the result of the director saying that "Either you go all in or you don't do it at all". He felt that instead of pussyfoot around, he wanted to make sure that everyone understood how far Ange had fallen and in how much of a hell she was in. He says that it was the "manly" thing to do.

- Momoka's voice actress really hoped that Momoka would eventually get to ride a giant robot, but that unfortunately never happened. The director did contemplate having her jump into a para-mail to try to save Ange in the end, but she'd most likely have been killed if that was the case and he ultimately decided against it.

I saw that on the Blu-Ray as well (Interview with Momoka, right?). I was actually planning on typing up the entire interview on here since I couldn't find it on youtube or anything. Glad you put this up here.

^That is how you do it right. You don't just half-ass it. Either you don't do it, or you go all the way! This is even emphasized in the uncensored Blu-Ray version of episode 22 where they literally "go all the way".

There's also one thing you forgot to mention on there. I believe it was Fukuda who said it that he wanted to bring back the more grimdark and fast-paced style of older anime from the 90s and 80s. Comparing Cross Ange to some of the older anime I watched, the anime actually did follow through and you can see the similarities with Cross Ange and the older anime. I think Fukuda has the right idea. Since there are people who favor the presentation style of older anime that is pretty rare in new anime, they should just make new anime with the presentation style of older anime!
