THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------

It's been years since I've watched Cyborg 009, and watching it again, I don't remember this show having shots of such powerful imagery. The best episodes so far have been the ones about the characters' backgrounds, as there's this strong sense of pain associated with the passage of time that the show gets across really well. These characters really have had their lives screwed up by the Black Ghosts, and this show really goes all out in showing how deep these emotional wounds run. It's still corny and cheesy, which is understandable given it being oriented towards a younger demographic, but I'm surprised at how much content this show has in terms of character.

Finally we get to 007's background episode as he's probably been my favorite thus far although I did find the episode lacking somewhat, I guess his background wasn't what I expected.

I really liked the subtlety in this episode. I watched the sub which had the dub script as subtitles. Because of this, I could tell they added a lot of extra, unnecessary lines to the dub. In the Japanese version, there's a lot of silent scenes which I felt let the emotions of the characters sink in better.

This show keeps soft balling the stand alone episodes. Let people we meet die to increase the pathos. 007's backstory isn't even that tragic. They could have trimmed a lot of fat involving the other cyborgs to focus more on 007. Or at least let him spend more time with the stand alone characters.

At this point, 003 is the only one that had an almost decent standalone episode. Maybe 008 will have better luck next episode.

I did like the fish eye lens for 003 with the music. The breakdown at the grave was kinda poignant also, but would have been much better if 007 found out about the death on his own without a guide. Then, doing fisheye thing after finding out about his ex's death would have been fire. Then he would have had to figure out how to talk his ex's daughter. Then the bar scene. Then the play.

Oh well.
