I just got the game and I was wondering if I should play the routes in a certain order or if it doesn't matter. I want to do Senri first.

It doesn't really matter which order for the max experience, but i'd advise you rotate heroines (unless you want 8 hrs of Koharu in a row, sure.).

Here are some of my recommendations:

-Do Senri's route before Akito's.
-Do Kakeru before Ron's and Masamune's
-The last guy should be Natsuhiko.

A suggestion would be Senri --> Heishi/Itsuki/Sakuya/Akito/Kakeru (any order) -->Ron/Masamune --> Natsuhiko

Kakeru, Ron, Masamune, Natsuhiko's routes are more of the plot-ty ones that deal more with THE WORLD, having a traitor, and conflict with the Ability users. I hope you enjoy the game! :D

The recommended route given from the game would be:

then everyone else.

It doesn't really matter the order in the long run, but I do agree on @ ShiningNinja's recommendation.

I played the game in the following order in my first playthrough:
Kakeru > Senri > Sakuya > Heishi > Akito > Itsuki > Masamune > Ron > Natsuhiko

Happy route first for all 9, bad route next (Ron has 2 bad endings btw) for all 9 then the side stories.
How you complete each story route is up to you.

Play the locked characters last; imo Natsuhiko's route is the best one so I'd recommend that as your final playthrough haha :)

that's what I ended up doing, oops. I didn't like Kakeru or Koharu in the anime version but I really enjoyed their route. It was cute. But now I'm on Senri's route and Kakeru is kind of irritating me in it. I like Senri a lot but I'm not sure that I like him with Koharu. But I'm not very far into his route yet.

I think I will do Akito next.

Another question about the game...

Is Norn9: Norn+Nonet the exact same as Norn9: Var Commons? Or is Var Commons a sequel?

I've been wanting to get one of the games on PS Vita but there's only Var Commons available on Amazon.
So I'm not sure if I should actually get it, if it is in fact a sequel.

(Also, I can only read English.. if that info helped)

The anime is based on the first game, Norn9 Vars Commons, which had been translated in English and can be bought on Amazon or other sellers. It also sprinkles in some tidbits from Norn9 Last Era, which is a sequel of sorts that gives more backstory and additional epilogues after the events of Var Commons. I highly recommend you play it if you can, it's a very enjoyable VN and fills in a lot of details the anime glosses over.

The screenshot that Rolan posted is what the game recommends and I mostly agree you should do those routes first respectively.

Personally though I did all of Mikoto first since I wasn't a fan of the other two girls during my first impression....
Something like:

Sakuya > Itsuki > Natsuhiko > Senri > Heishi > Akito > Kakeru > Masamune> Ron

Playing Natsuhiko's route quite early on probably resulted in me pushing Ron & Masamune towards the end [for reasons you might discover later on] and though it recommends Heishi being first I somewhat feel like I should've played Akito before him

[though now that I think about it again....Can't remember which of Nanami's was locked initially...] ...oh well....

So, just to confirm:
Var Commons is the game title I should buy if I want to get to know the characters better than in the anime.

But then, why is there a title of Norn+Nonet?

Yes.

The japanese full title is Norn9 -Norn+Nonet- Var Commons. For some reason, the english localization took out the Norn+Nonet subtitle (lol at the empty space where they erased it off the logo), and have localized it as Norn9: Var Commons instead.

The cover looks like this for the English version:

Usually Japanese games have a little tag line in the logo - in this case the Norn + Nonet means Norn (the ship they're on), and Nonet (refers to the 9 guys)

You can start with Senri for Koharu, he's a good first pick and a sweet guy, then I suggest rotating between the girls because it gives a better view overall. I can't think of a reason on why you should start Sakuya first for Mikoto though, it's been a while since I played the game but I started with Itsuki and actually I felt his route was less plot heavy.
Akito is my favorite route for Nanami but you should do Heishi's route first or do Senri's before Akito.

A bit of off-topic. I'm currently playing the game, what routes should I finish to don't get spoiled by the anime?

Senri, Heishi, Sakuya, and Itsuki are the ones with minimal plot that would be safe for non-spoilers.

Kakeru and Akito's routes are highlighted in the anime, so do these two later to avoid anime spoilers. Ron and Masamune has plot points about the Norn world/situation with the ability users. Natsuhiko's is the route that ties in a lot of loose ends, whose role in the anime is unclear since he's only had two thirty second cameos bombing stuff so far lol.

Var Commons is the Vita port (both Jap and USA) of the PSP version of Norn9 (Norn+Nonette). PSP version is only available in Japanese. Only difference is re-drawn CGs.... I guess?

If only I had known this when I played... Doing Akito's before Senri's slightly ruins the surprise

The CGs from the main story were the same :'D
The PSVita port/Var Commons was a pretty nice upgrade actually. Besides the much nicer graphics on a vita screen, you get a ~50 minute side short-story for each character, additional CGs, background music, and a few other random extras lol.
