General Discussion of Comics you are reading/plan to read.

Since there are so many series, This thread will be for general discussion, depending on the response, characters will get their own thread. That will make it easier to follow.

I have not really been keeping up with most DC titles since the New 52. It's mostly just Justice League and Teen Titans I've been following.
Not been too thrilled with the organization at Marvel either. It's confusing just sticking to the X-men titles. I wasn't initially going to, but now I'm going to complete Secret Wars just to see how they'll end this God Emperor Doom business.

I don't really like the direction some of the New 52 characters are taking. I haven't been able to keep up with comics lately but last I saw of Batgirl she was taking a selfie.

Yes, but I doubt they'd do another reboot so fast. What they may do is find a way to make the pre-Flashpoint stuff canon again.

The Nightwing series wasn't very good, but I liked the addition of a Sinestro series and the Birds of Prey one had a pretty good run.
Interestingly enough, the Batman titles were best when the entire bat family was included. All their different personalities interacting is something that you just can't mess up.

I'm not sure if I would be into a reboot to resemble the movies, I think the movies should try to adapt to the comics and never vice versa.
Does this mean comicbook Joker will have damaged written on his forehead? Like I am all for the new Joker I think he will be fun, but I do think that one tattoo was going a bit too far.

Maybe, but I don't know if altering stuff would help. A reboot might though, as people can start fresh and all that. But if they model it after the movies then idk. Man of Steel wasn't super great, it was aight, but nothing to write home about. So far the DC movies are a bit mediocre, the only one that looks like fun so far is Suicide Squad. So idk if a reboot will help sell more comics, it might if the new movies are good. But after seeing the trailer of Batman v Superman, I just don't know.

I do most of my reading on Marvel Unlimited. But those three I'm collecting. I wish DC had something similar. I'd read alot more DC if they did.

Yeah. He becomes Spidy pretty close to the end. He is pretty good, imo. I haven't read any of him post Secret Wars, besides his part of ANAD Avengers, but what I did read, I liked. He has slightly different powers then Peter, so it adds something new to it.

Aside from some select Batman Stories, Frank Miller's Daredevil origin story and Watchmen I've most read non-superhero comics and graphic novels so far.

Fables and The Walking Dead are probably the biggest franchises I fanboy about and I also love pretty much anything by Alan Moore (his Swamp Thing run was great).

Another comic author I adore is Craig Thompson. Habibi is probably one of my favorite pieces of literature, period.

Bone is another one of my favorites. Very quirky fantasy series with lovable characters and universal appeal.

Most recently I've read The Unwritten which did a pretty good job at exploring stories and language at a meta level while also presenting an engaging plot and entertaining parody elements of a well-known series of books about a magical boy.

There's More Stuff but those are pretty much my alltime and most recent favorites.
I probably regret this post by now.

Question: If I wanted to get into newer batman comics, where would be a good place to start. I like the darker stuff I guess like the Dark Night or something close to that. Anyone have some favorites.??

Dokubachi said:

Yeah actually most of what I read is non super hero related. Some of my favorites are Hack/Slash, Locke and Key, East of West and the Humans.

Hack/Slash is like a 90's teen horror flick with a goth mc babe and her brute of a sidekick
Lock and Key is a psychological/ mystery thriller, Some really neat concepts in this one
East of West is kind of a dystopian supernatural future
The Humans is what would happen if you took The Warriors and mixed it with Planet of the Apes... on motorbikes. Very funny stuff in there

@Nightwing, i think i mentioned in another thread, totally check out Y the Last Man, i usually rec it for a first time non super hero comic and no ones regreted reading it yet!

I mostly read Image comics (TWD and East of West included) Dark Horse and Vertigo stuff
I also read Valiant which is technically superheroes but totally different from the DC and Marvel universes.

Craig Thompson is great, Blankets is usually what i tell people to check out if they want to get into the indie gn scene. @Pullman do you read any other small press/self published gns? i got a huge ass collection of them .__. I'm a big Jeff Smith fan too. Bone is amazing and i really liked RASL too! (look at your blog pics)

I have a few more graphic novels but since I tend to be mroe drawn to extensive universes and longer stories the majority of my collection are that kind of stuff.

I have some french and german comics/graphic novels (I love Moebius art <3) and Flood by Eric Drooker is another one I enjoyed. Oh, and also Jeff Lemire.

Also I agree, Y:The Last Men is always a good way to start getting into non superhero comics. It was one of the first for me too after 100 Bullets and Garth Ennis' Preacher.

Speaking of which, since I'm a Garth Ennis fan I've been thinking about getting into The Punisher since he did a lot of stuff for that franchise IIRC. Plus the vigilante kind of 'superhero' has always been appealing to me unlike the ones with more supernatural elements.
Anyone has experience with The Punisher and can recommend me a good entry point?

Yeah Moebius was amazing RIP T_T yeah 100 Bullets and Preacher are both amazing, early Vertigo series are amazing. Have you read Sandman, Lucifer, Books of Magic, Animal Man, etc? I love first wave Vertigo, thats how i got into comics.

Ennis's Punisher run is great, but i recommend checking out The Boys, which was his own superhero verse series, has more of a Preacher feel. Ennis Punisher run is technically 2 different series. he did v4 and v5 of 616 Punisher and then a miniseries to wrap that storyline up. He also did 60 issues of Punisher Max which is a separate uni but draws alot from his 616 stuff

i have those HC editions, just a warning, not the best paper quality, the 2014 SC might be better

EDIT:
I FUCKING LOVE JEFF LEMIRE. favorite creator

And from the ones you mentioned I've read only Sandman which was one of my first comics and still one of my favorites. It's how I got to know Neil Gaiman.

And I've already read The Boys (it's in my collection) which is why I was trying to branch out into Punisher for more Ennis.

i haven't read too much x-men but all of Ed Brubaker's Captain America comics are amazing. idk what the reading order would be for trades (i read it digitally), cause the run spans a couple of series and miniseries, so you'd have to look into that, but its totes worth reading, really amazing, art is killer too
