Let's see.
It's not impossible to do it properly. Arc I and II are more than 3k pages together. That's about the size of the main 10 volumes of ginga eiyuu densetsu. Which is probably one of the closest comparison you can do for adaptation (the works are very different, but the difficulty to adapt it in anime should be around the same kind, and the length is equally similar).
Ginga eiyuu densetsu is often praised around here as being well adapted. But it's 110 episodes long.
I would conclude that in order to adapt those two arcs, you probably need at least 80 episodes rather than the 26 used here.
Furthermore, due to the sheer amount of information, if you do that, you need to prepare yourself for very very long explanations, discussions, about history, about economics, about politics, about ethnics, religions, that would take whole episodes with little to no action in between.
Which would displease most peoples watching it. Most probably, this would sell very badly.
The current adaptation appeals just fine to the readers of the novels like me who will enjoy what we already know being put into animation (as we don't need explanations), as well as to peoples who don't want to bother thinking about what's going on and just enjoy the fights and... The fanservice scenes. This sold well, so I can say that this was the right choice.
So to answer you. They could do a proper adaptation. But it would not sell since most anime watchers want action and fanservice, and not long talking and background explanations.
So no, they should avoid doing it again.
Those books are extremely long and complicated, which makes most readers of light novels just searching school life romance and ecchi scenes avoid it.
Yet those books sells more than most other books, with around 35k-40k sales per volumes even after going over 15,000 pages published, there are still that much peoples reading and buying. That's like 4 to 5 times more than most LN sales right now.
This means that even though those books make most people look the other way, they are extremely addictive for readers choosing to go through them. And I can confirm this. It's addictive, indeed.
But you need first to start them seriously, not stopping after just a while, not being discouraged by the amount of explanations and complicate stuff.
Why am I explaining this in this topic? Because an anime adaptation is basically a way to avoid bothering with reading the novels. It's targeting mostly peoples who don't want to bother going through that, and therefore, that won't follow a 80 episodes anime remake going into detail.
As for those who can bother with it, they're better of reading the source material, or are already reading it.
So in the end, there's no point, really. If anything, if they want to put money in this series again, even though it's never going to happen, I'd like to see the third arc animated instead. This would allow readers like me to see all the new characters who start to appear with that arc animated, and lots of epic stuff as well, as the third arc onward KyouHora is especially full of epic stuff and awesome characters. That would sure be nice. Not going to happen though, as this arc is even longer than the second arc by quite a bit.
So if you want to understand, I suggest a few detailed explanations about what happens in the episodes that were written around. I saw one especially well done that helped a lot of people, rather than using the wikia which isn't easy to use alongside the episodes. |
