Oh there's hope. There's always hope especially after that performance. Cute fireflies btw. Kaori's fascination never ceases to amuse me.

The last page gave an impression that Kaori would be very sick and would "die".

You're so right, especially with the subtle foreshadowing at the end of chapter 19 too. Really great chapter though, Kousei is back on his foot and moving forward in life. That moment with his mother's friend was really nice.

I also believe shes sick the song choice she chose for them to play is a big hint "Love Sorrow" and the panel on page 23 where you see the violin being smashed in what looks like an empty room thats possibly a medical facility. Also I believe that Kaori is really in-love with Kousei, but knowing her time frame she won't act upon those feelings because it'll be to hard on her and she'll show signs of depression. They also had hints in earlier chapters when she would ball up her fist shaking and him not knowing why he praised her a bit and she seemed to calm down a bit.

I gotta say, from what I have read in chapters 1-20, I dont think anyone is in love with anyone here. I just think that they enjoy the other person's company, but I dont think its romantic feelings.

I dont think Kousei likes Kaori that way.

I dont think Tsubaki likes Kousei that way.

I dont think Kaori likes Kousei that way.

Ryouta found Kaori attractive, but I dont think he likes her that way.

Kaori looked like she liked Ryouta in the beginning, but it looks like those feelings have disappeared.

Thats true, but we can't talk too fast things might change in upcoming chapters either bad or good. I'm won't speculate to much into it.

Kaori looked like she liked Ryouta in the beginning, but it looks like those feelings have disappeared.

As for romantic vs. non-romantic feelings, I think that there are some floating out there. In particular, I think that Kousei does love Kaori, but more than that, he respects her, admires her, and wants to emulate her.

Tsubaki may be in love with Kousei. She, at the very least, is jealous of Kaori's growing relationship with Kousei and the connection they share through music.

Ryouta doesn't love anyone other than himself, really. At the same time, he "loves" all women. He is not serious enough to be in a committed relationship and isn't likely to be so in the scope of this manga.

Kaori may or may not be in love with Kousei, but I don't think she is serious about Ryouta anymore, or ever was, really. Kousei's repeated statement that about her being in love with his friend isn't really valid at this point, in my opinion.

Moving on to high school is a big thing at this point in the story. Right now, it appears that Ryouta is the only one with his course set, since he got an athletic scholarship somewhere. Tsubaki will likely play softball somewhere, but she isn't good enough for people to be seeking her out, I guess.

The real questions at this point are is Kaori and Kousei high school plans and Kaori's health. Will they choose a school with an affiliated music college? Is Kaori healthy enough to continue playing, even if she does go to a music oriented high school?

Kousei could easily go to a normal high school and have Hiroko teach him piano. That might be better for him than going to a place with a traditional music school. Kaori would also have issues fitting into a standard music school curriculum, I would think... In particular if her health is a problem, which is appears to be.

I think Kaori's health is probably the lynchpin that this manga hinges on at this point. I fear that, as others have stated, she is doomed. The question at that point would be how Kousei would recover from losing her.

(RAMPANT SPECULATION AHEAD)

I do wonder how far the anime will get in 22 episodes... Beyond this point, I'm sure!

If the blonde chick does have something, I hope that she wont be saved by a shounen cliche (since this is shounen) like:

"Kousei, I had this horrible thing, but your music, your piano playing saved me!!!! Im cured"

Stuff like that.

That's true, I can see her becoming some type of Saint that rescued him from his trauma of the past. I also think that

You know, I won't always be here by your side to help you.

Tragic foreshadowing. Don't want Kaori to die.
But if she does, Kousei (if he's in love with her) might powerfully play a piece of music that changes the world around him. Death does lead to depression, but it can also lead to creativity and expressing your emotions, just like how he did in chapter 18 (he expressed his feelings and thanks towards Kaori).

Kaori herself raised a death flag. So it means, this'll be a tragedy? ;-;

Anyways, I liked Kousei's answer. Its like he's in the edge of blooming love.
The world shall know the truth soon.

Man, this series gives me so many feels with each and every page. I love it so much, but the feels have been keeping me away. I need to just pull through and finish this manga already.

That last scene was so beautiful, but so sad 😭
