Has this surpassed Mushishi season 1?

Well, i've noticed in the ranking that Mushishi: Zoko Shou is now ranked around 8.88 at #15 while mushishi is ranked 8.82 at #23. personally, I think there really isn't much of a difference as the anime is episodic, but it seems other people think differently than me.

What are your thoughts of the new season compared to the old one?

It's more likely for people who didn't like the first season not to continue to the second, especially now as it's airing so it's mostly fans. So it's common that sequels have a higher score than the prequel regardless of quality(unless it's a huge downgrade).

I'm personally liking the new episodes, I wouldn't say more than the prequel though. They feel connected and the second season isn't even a quarter of the way through so it's hard to compare them but a couple of the episodes so far have been great.

Well, it's as Intro said but I also enjoy season 2 slightly more so far, if only for my favorite OP ever.
I probably regret this post by now.

I dunno if thats always the case. I mean the ippo sequels are lower than the original, eva 3.0 is much lower than 2.0 etc

Well the 2nd half of the manga had the slightly better stories.
So not surprised at all by its current ranking.

season 1 was a masterpiece in my book. can't get any better than a masterpiece, so they're about the same.

I mean, if you watched them all the way through once, nothing hasn't really changed much. You don't judge Mushishi on its entire series, but rather the individual episodes. Since the quality has maintained, you'd most likely be having favourite episodes rather than favourite seasons.

For me, no.
The first 7 episodes of season 1, as a whole, is better/more relatable than what I've seen in this season so far, even though the art now is obviously better.

It might be nostalgia though. since many people are saying this season is better.

I can't remember the details of S1, it's been years, but all that I recall is that it was simply beautiful when i watched it. With only the memory of a beautiful first season to compare to, it'll be hard to say this season is better, nostalgia has a large effect here. Perhaps if I watched S1 again today, I'll change my mind.

Through 7 episodes, I think Season 1 is better. That's not to knock season two though, it's been amazing so far as well.

Same, though it may just be that I could marathon the first season in one or two settings, but with this I am stuck with watching in small chunks. Also, I feel like despite a higher polish in the art, overall visually it's not as spectacular as some of the sequences in the first season and a lot of empty backgrounds (although when it does have them, it's really beautiful).

Maybe I'm just misremembering but I did rewatch the first season quite recently and I never constantly thought "oh so many empty BGs" as this season has been at times. Anyway, it's a TV version, so I am not going to judge too harshly. This season is still really great. I would like give it a rewatch in the future after the bluray versions are released.

Its almost the same, but there were some eps in the first season which I thought were just okay, so the second one feels slightly more consistent and polished to me.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Overall I think that the first season was a tad better; but they are both masterpieces either way.

its just a random nitpick for me. I don't like how its spread out in a way where i won't get any mushishi at all over the summer, but obviously that doesn't matter really at all.

by the way, do you know why they changed it from 12 to 10 episodes?

Well then that's not length then, that's how it's released. It's still going to be the same length at the end.

I believe it's because of the break they had, maybe had some problems. The last two episodes are going to be on the BD/DVDs. I'm guessing because they only had the timeslot for 12 episodes, regardless of if they were able to release them on time.

The animation in the 2nd season is better. That's about it. Other than that, they're equally good.

Just a better animation, the first season is superior in every other way.

how so? animation can mean a heck of a lot, you know. especially with regard to mushishi, where an emphasis is placed on atmosphere and visual storytelling.

To all those who don't consider this on par with the first season - can I ask why? I've seen far too many people saying that it was good but there was something missing, or just not delving into WHY this season was lacking in comparison.

I've been thinking a lot about it, and this new season is better, at the very least, from a technical standpoint. Nagahama's directing is better; the atmospheres in these new episodes are more absorbing and memorable. Each episode has a distinct colour scheme or ambiance which separates them, puts them all on the same level - the quality consistency is much higher this time round.
The sparser use of the OST serves to enhance the atmosphere and the particular mood of each episode, whereas previously the OST was relied on more heavily. This was never detrimental, but when the OST is used with more restrain, the positive difference it makes it noticeable.
Other than that, it's really just more Mushishi. If you don't like it as much, the only thing you could put it down to is the stories themselves. But I recall (and I haven't read the manga myself) a lot of people remarking that the second half of the manga contains the best stories. So here they are.

Don't get me wrong, the original Mushishi is as close to perfection as I've ever seen in anime (on par with some other things), but thus far, the continuation is a more refined version of THAT, somehow elevating this series even further.

The first season of Mushishi is the only 26 episode anime I finished in one seating. The first half of it is not only one of the best anime but also one of the best TV series I have seen yet. It had very unpredictable storylines and great emotional impact. It probably raised my expectations too much. The second half of the first season to me felt inferior compared to the first half. The stories became more or less predictable. The emotional connection you felt with the characters seemed less. The second season so far feels like more of the same, but it does have its moments. The stories are shorter in some episodes. The music which made the first season haunting and memorable is more subdued this time. The animation is probably better but the first season was no slacker for something that was made eight years ago.

I've been really thinking about this for a long time about which season is better; and I've come to the conclusion that there is no objective answer as to whether one is better than the other.
However, if you think that one is slightly superior, simply.. it's because there are reasons why you become more attached to one than the other, and that just has to do with how some episodes are more comprehensible towards oneself.

I personally prefer S1 over S2. The emotions I felt then was raw (maybe it was because I was younger IDK). It's still there for me, but I felt more connected during S1 than S2.

I don't think those are objective though. The animation improvement is, but the other thing can easily be considered subjective. Atmosphere being memorable cannot be called objective, nor can the usage of scores. The music has always been minimal, which is one of the main reason why this anime has much more emotional impact IMO
