I can't wait for Shinsen (I think they are going to sub this) to start subbing this show. Because really, this is one of the only Winter Anime I'm going to be watching. Hakaba Kitarou is part of the Noitamina-series, which previously featured series as Mononoke, Moyashimon and Honey and Clover. It looks like it is going to be a very good horror anime, which this season needs.

Kitaro is one of the most popular animated characters in Japan. He's been in something like 5 anime series and 7 movies over the span of 50 years, which totals more episodes than Dragon Ball Z. The name of this franchise is "Gegege no Kitaro", and to the best of my knowledge, the earlier series were never fansubbed. In most of these episodes he's a little kid who fights monsters; it's kind of like a supernatural Scooby-Doo kind of thing without the cool 70s stoner chic. "Gegege no Kitaro" was a cartoon aimed squarely at the preschool set, and it's got extremely limited appeal outside of that. "Graveyard Kitaro" is the original manga this series came from. It was written back in the late 50s by a guy named Shigeru Mizuki (Note the protagonist's name in the first episode). Shigeru Mizuki is one of Japan's great cultural historians, and it was his work that brought the ancient Japanese concept of "youkai" and "mononoke," which were inhuman monsters that stalked the countryside, back into the postwar public consciousness. Kitaro made him every bit as famous as Osamu Tezuka or Hayao Miyazaki. There's a museum and several surrounding city blocks devoted to him at his birthplace. The original version, as you'll see when you watch the episode, is not suitable for children. Basically, imagine you’re watching the original Scooby-Doo, and finding out that Fred was a serial ax murderer, and that Daphne had a heroin addiction. (From Shinsen-Subs Forum)

Just added this bit of information. Did I mention that Shaggy was once the leader of a hippie revolution?
