Finished reading it this morning. Like the previous poster, I also enjoyed how the setting was handled with all the references to history, convincing architecture, and so on. The art style was really nice, the characters have a realistic feel to how they are designed, and the art stands out when compared to many other manga series, I think.

Reading Monster was overall very enjoyable, and it was satisfying to receive a more happy ending. I would be interested in knowing more about Johan's state of mind. I did not read this manga very attentively, and I read the whole thing within a short span of time, but I don't believe it was clearly shown whether he really does have a split personality, which was theorized, or if maybe he faked it, or something else. Glad Lunge managed to stay alive until the end. I took a liking to him, beginning with the first scene where he was introduced. His almost smug smile is a sight to behold.

I wonder if things would have taken a turn for the better if Tenma just didn't run from the police after that incident with the adoptive parents and the journalist. He seems to not care about proving his innocence, however his goal would be easier to achieve, if he managed to do it.

Just finished reading the manga for about 3 to 4 days. And my God this May be the Best manga that i have read! What i love about this manga shows the struggles of every character and that way we can relate to some of them. It is 10/10 masterpiece to me! Im only sad that many good characters died.

My favourite characters were Dr Reichwein, Grimmer, Tenma & Lunge.
Johan IT IS THE BEST ANTAGONIST EVER Written!! I am bit confused about the ending so im going to watch some Explanation videos on YT.
Truly amazing ride to read! Not too short, nor too long! Urasawa is easily skyrocketing in top 5 my favourite manga artists! He is a God among gods. He is now at my no4 sport, really Hard to put him on higher but im 100% sure that after i read his other masterpieces like 20 century boys, Pluto & His currently ongoing manga Asadora! He is already holding such precious place in my heart. I cant imagine not reading his other works as well.

So 10/10 from me for this masterpiece!

This was an incredible manga, probably one of the best I’ve ever read! I knew “Monster” had to be good, but I didn’t expected to like it this much!
Next time I’ll stop at my local comic book store, I’ll ask for more of Urasawa! I have to explore di mangaka further! My first 10/10 here on MAL.

Genius.
Urasawa is one of the best Mangakas out there, the horror and suspense he puts in his stories is unmatched. I really enjoyed reading this. I like the ambiguous ending. Johan was a really cool and creepy villain. Tenma was a goat MC. Personally I liked 20th Century Boys more but this still great.

I thought the rating on this manga was overrated at first when I saw the score, until I started reading and couldn't stop. I love love love the thrills the story gave me throughout the manga and the ending where it leaves us to our imagination of what would happen next. I'm so happy to see Tenma's name was cleared out, it is so satisfying after what he went through throughout all those years. This manga is definitely in my Top 3 for sure.

Man, when Johan just woke up like that I actually started to shake a little bit. That last chapter was crazy, Tenma "imagining" that the mother of the twins just gave Nina instead of Johan because they look similar is crazy and that's probably what happened, she probably told Tenma that she is the real monster because she had to choose between Nina and Johan... Damn what a great manga, definitely 10/10

What a fucking masterpiece of a manga. It was already great, but those last chapters just elevated everything. Loved the ending, Johan waking up gave me all the fucking chills and the final revelation about his mother and her Sophie’s choice was beautiful. Also Nina getting and blushed and excited about Tenma coming back was cute, hope they actually end up together. Can’t say I imagined the ending would be like this, but it was a pleasant surprise for sure.

Man, that was such a thrilling ride.

I agree with most people that it was a little too long for its own good and got pretty complicated at times, and that nearly brought its score down to a 9 for me. It also took me looking back and reanalyzing the final volume to realize that my head was just a little fried when I finished it from all the reading. (I also read it in Japanese, so that definitely contributed to the fatigue)

However, this ending did speak powerful volumes and the open-endedness of it might be slightly anticlimactic for some, but I think the amount of interpretations it leaves behind proves that it might have been the best way to end it all.

Urasawa is a fucking genius for this. He wrote such a complex story without giving into any obvious tropes and ended up with a masterpiece. I ended up reading Pluto during this and that was also an amazing story. Can't wait to attack 20th Century Boys towards the end of spring.

Also, not to crowd the thread unnecessarily, but Lunge's apology to Tenma a few chapters back and Grimmer's last words hit so fucking hard. If this were ever to be adapted into a western drama and they executed it well, Grimmer's line would forever get cemented with famous movie and TV quotes, I swear.

I would say that the ending fits with a character like Johan, just as at some time I thought that the ending of MW also fit with the character of Yuuki.
It was definitely a cryptic and ambiguous ending... But I do feel that it has its grace. It was an end in which the mystery dominated.
I just... Idk, Urasawa does such a good job with some of the characters, coming up with secondary character situations and of course the suspense and tension that dominates so much, but there are other characters that I really don't feel like they were that strong, although well, it is difficult to do everything correctly.
Well, despite everything, I feel that this manga is really worth reading, it is one of the exponents of mystery, thriller and suspense in the world of manga, and at the same time one of its pioneers.

wow. what an absolutely amazing manga this was. the last 50 chapters or so were absolutely perfect. the ending was essentially flawless and i really see no glaring flaws in this series at all. truly deserving of the title “masterpiece”.

This was the best psychological thriller I've read. It was a slow burn, but the way the pieces of the puzzle came together throughout kept me reading, even when I wanted to stop. I'm pretty sure Johan sitting up was just a figment of Dr Tenma imagination. I don't believe that physically happened. I do feel this was a sad ending though, Tenma really did end up all alone like Johan predicted. He has no wife, children, etc. he just travels, helping people. Very bittersweet.

What an anticlimactic ending. Pluto (from the same author) is one of my favorite manga but Monster was really disappointing overall.

Excellent cast of characters that all add something to the story. Encouraged to read at the end of almost every chapter. Ending was a great payoff of everything that it had been building up to.

It's a very good manga. It's not great or a masterpiece or anything like that. I get the plot, the story... I like the plot twists, the characters, and their interactions. I love Lunge's and Grimmer's character developments.

I kinda understand Johan, I guess, but I can't seem to see why people think he's the greatest character of all time or something. Hell, I hated Lunge, but now he's one of my favourites.

And the open endedness of the ending... I'm assuming Johan is gonna kill his mother, or maybe I'm wrong.

I don't give ratings, but if I had to, the manga is probably an 8/10.

Urasawa is a master of suspense. He creates strong characters with complexity and intrigue. These two things combined for an edge of your seat reading experience. Monster is a strong manga, and I would certainly recommend it for the thrill ride that it is.
