I'm not into girls beating up guys if it doesn't seem feasible, but I think they did a good job here. 14 year old Oscar looked pretty much equally built to the 15 year old servant.

I watched Anne of Green Gables just before this and it also started with parents wanting a boy and ending up with a girl.

Those brushstrokes, dang. So deliciously crisp. I found myself staring at their sleeves a lot. The painted backgrounds and saturated lighting are exactly the mood I've been craving. Glad to finally be watching this.

The complexity presented to us while introducing the set up in just the first episode is a pleasant surprise. I echo what everyone else said, what a fantastic beginning. I hope the rest continues like this.

Well, I finally got round to it. I'm watching Rose of Versailles. I've been meaning to pick this show up for a while because it's basically catnip to me. Classic shoujo in a historical setting. Ugh, I'm just going to love this show I know it.

Already, I'm getting MASSIVE Utena vibes, I can totally see how Utena was influenced by this show. I'm totally getting Patalliro vibes from the noses and eyelashes, which makes sense because they were made roughly at the same time so I'm assuming that was a popular character design of the time.

Great start to a show, a clear concise introduction that told us everything we need to know for the set up without painful amounts of exposition. I wonder where the romance is going to come in, if it's going to go the shoujo-ai route like Utena or if Andre is going to be the love interest...?

Also, it looks fucking gorgeous. I could honestly just watch this for the visuals itself. That OP with the monochromatic figures and the rose thorns. Stun.

Time to watch this classic, looks interesting so far despite it's outdated animation quality (understandably since it came out in 1979). From the intro I kinda thought the dad would keep Oscar's gender a secret but by the looks of it everyone knows she's a girl. To think Oscar's plan to not become part of the Royal guard would backfired and even made it much worse by being appointed the Royal guard commander.

Nice first episode, Osamu and Akio doing their magic with the animation, the narration is great, good OP and ED... It really looks promising so far. I really like Oscar, she kinda of reminds me of Joe Yabuki because they're both so stubborn lol. It's always interesting to see Anime based on european stories, let's see where this goes...

I haven't watched this since my childhood and I cannot remember a thing other than I loved it then. It holds up so well. Goes to show that if you have a good story and good direction, you can transcend time.

It's crazy how much this influenced Utena.

Very sad that she is giving up on being a woman. It feels like the wrong choice.

I liked this episode, I hope the rest of the show can live up, I don't normally watch these old classics.

What a pity! I grew up with anime like these. I will admit I'm not a teen anymore like many on here probably. I have a feeling this website is mainly little kids.
I was a kid back in the 90s and they don't make anime like these anymore sadly. There are tons that deserve a watch. You won't be disappointed.

Oh, I laughed a little, but just because the style is so old-school and the characters reactions were so different from your average modern anime. I just love watching 60-70-80s TV productions (like original Star Trek or Doctor Who series), they are so amazing and unique.
The story sounds really good and Oscar is such a strong character, I must say she is one of the reasons I wanted to watch this show. André, my baby, is a plus! β™‘

Yes, these old school ones are the best! They might not have the eye candy of modern animation but characters have a memorable quality to them and they tell a story that captivates you and teaches you something also.
I can't get into a lot of new stuff. It seems to have no soul or memorable characters. They all look the same visually as well. Back then there was more variety in the art style.

The first episode was surprisingly enjoyable and not confusing. Whatever one may say, Oscar is a Lady, a very admirable and stunning Lady.

Andre seems like a very nice person to Oscar, I hope there is romance between them.

I wouldn't have guessed that it was this intense with the fighting and abuse. I'm really looking forward to see how this turns out! I've only read about the series and I can't say I'm not hyped, since the animation is really good as well as the beautiful watercolor images that show up from time to time.

Being familiar with the Laraine version of the opening song that I discovered 6 months ago, it's really exciting to finally hear the original. It's the original, right?

On another serious note, what the hell? Pushing your teen daughter off the stairs over a fight? That could kill anyone, be it a boy or a girl. Everyone knows you shouldn't push anyone off the stairs during a fight.

Wow after watching so many different 70's anime series, this one really suprised me with how well everything is set up and each character is already so complex and i just love the setting. Its nice to get something that isn't super robot for once lol. I think I am really going to love this.

I watched this series back in the 90s and more than once. A true classic and the first episode is already very engaging. I never get the complaints about the style of animation... It's the story the matters and they don't make anime like these anymore sadly. I'm in my 30s so I have seen lots of old anime and they used to have such nice stories that taught you something and felt very realistic.
This anime has amazing animation for its age and the historical background is done so well. You can't dislike a masterpiece like this. Who cares if the animation is old. Pay attention to the story and the characters. They are what you should focus on.

@Niveen_Sleem it's set in the 18th century... Back then a daughter was a father's property basically. Oscar enjoyes far more liberties than your average woman would have in that period being raised as a boy. You need to remember it's not set in modern times and you can't judge behaviours of people back then by our standards now.

@Azukaa Yes, I'm aware of all of that, and I'm not one of those twits who judge everything through a modern lense without taking the historical context into consideration. But even back then, people didn't kill their children without reason. They also weren't stupid. They knew pushing people off the stairs could kill. Talk about dramatic much. And if the man saw Oscar as his property and not a human (although this is not true, he did see her as his daughter but he treated her roughly as if she were a boy) he wouldn't damage her. She is a valuable property.

What an incredible episode!

I only opened the video to check the quality and I couldn't stop watching until the very end. What a gem! Real artists and craftsmen worked on this anime. One can tell by the harmony and symphony at play in every single moment. I am flabbergasted. This is the mastery that only a small portion of anime creators possess today, so much was lost! Instead we get slop after brainless and uninspired slop today. And so many idiots applaud it! What a tragedy! But this, this here is the genuine kind. Cherish it.

I have this series in my watchlist from long ago, finally I decides to watch it because is similar to Utena and was a huge influence (lets see if is also better).
The father decided her fate very quickly, originally I thought that no one will know that Oscar is a girl, and only 14 and already named commander wow. She is very strong with the sword, the duel was great and also the fist fight, and that guy was only a servant right? From this point seems very promising.
The dub was great, especially the Oscar's voice is perfect, but the opening, the sequence was very good but the music ehhh, could be better, the ending dissapointing honestly, it doesnt had a sequence or a memorable song honestly.
