I missed all of these characters. I was especially waiting for the next chapter in Zoro and Perona's story since we started Impel Down and although I liked the last better this was still a fun episode!
The Zoro section made me notice a connection with Impel Down. Both Luffy and Zoro are teaming up with past villains and fleshing them out through that process. Further, I think both Perona and Mr. 3 are pretty good or at least alright people under their 'superior' exterior.
That said, I personally feel Perona's childish and dominating personality comes out of a place of not knowing how to make friends which could easily be seen last one of these episodes. I think she just wants affection but the only way she's comfortable doing that is to have servants that are below her rather than having nakama who are equals. For example she did love Kumacy even though she treated him horribly and she was super lonely and didn't want Zoro to leave her last episode and further she felt bad for both Zoro and Usopp and couldn't help but cheer them on and took care of Zoro's injuries and waited by his side during the healing process. All of these signs to me tell me a story of a childish girl who can't hold relationships outside of ones of a controlling nature and that's why I think someone so stubborn that she cannot control them no matter how many negative ghosts they use, and who also relies on her to escape should be a nice growing experience for her. She's forced to have an equal even if she doesn't like to consider Zoro one, even though if the chance was given that she could have someone she can dominate and make into a cute servant she would drop Zoro like a fly. Even thinking about her at Thriller Bark, she was always fighting with her 'equals', she's never as far as I know been shown to treat someone with respect. I could be forgetting some instances in Thriller Bark though!
Where as Mr. 3 reminds me of Perona in a few different ways. He definitely doesn't have the kindness she has, at least we've seen many many selfish acts in which he didn't show care for anyone but himself. And he's always done that, "I'm super smart and better than everyone" thing even though he's not quite that amazing. He himself didn't notice how much he cared for Bon Clay until he was gone but it was then, when he was missing, that he realized he respected him whether or not he showed it openly, and after everything Luffy did for them it was enough that, even though he rationalized it differently, he put himself on the line to protect Luffy. This all may be going too far but this to me reads that he has this superiority complex which stops him from openly caring about other people in a way that he himself understands but a part of him on the inside really does care about them and respect them, he just doesn't feel comfortable showing it! This aversion to openly holding others highly due to different versions of superiority complexes is the commonality I see between Perona and Mr. 3 even though they culminate in different ways and even though they have different personality traits around those complexes.
So, to have our main characters flesh out villains like this is just awesome to me. Teaming up with villains via coincidence is just friggin a great tactic to do that.
It was also nice and hilarious to see Zoro just ignore and disregard Perona's bullying most of the time. When she flew away sticking her tongue out at him he was just like, ok...
I also loved the Brook section, I missed that bag of bones. He's such a sweet and happy guy and his hope and resolve to hold out for the future warms my freaking heart. The talk about wondering if the Straw Hats were looking at the sun with him was on the nose but it was charming nonetheless! Overall its hilarious to see such an optimistic and hopeful character called Satan-sama even if it's completely understandable. And seeing him duck under the door because he was too big to fit out of it was cute too. :)
Plus I think that’s the tribe Apoo is from which is quite interesting. Robin is linked to revolutionaries and Brook is linked to Apoo, Franky is linked to Vegapunk, Sanji is linked to Ivancov, Zoro to Perona, so I wonder if Chopper, Usopp and Nami will end up being involved with some bigger plot relevance too.
P.S. THIS IS MY FAV ZORO DESIGN IT MAKES MY HEART CHURN!!!
