"... is it wrong to stay friends with someone you have feelings for?" - Haru, 2020

love this episode, and that last part where Shinako went to their Chiristmas/ mini college reunion party.... this will be an interesting one...

and by the way Shinako sure is great at remembering those past events, even the food she bought or treated for Rikou way years ago, she has able to think of that one. hahaha

I've realized the past few eps that this anime does a good job of showing the contrast of relationships & love from a teen perspective and an adult perspective. When you're a teen it feels so much less complicated but as an adult, things are not so black & white... which is exactly why things are so messy for the four of them!

EDIT : wait their were EXTRA ?! I was just looking at scenes after the ending, not separated video. And there are 5 of them ?

This episode was not really surprising. The pace was slow as usual and I don't know if I should even consider the changes as we had examples of back-tracking previously.

We get once more insights on Shinako & Rikuo relation in college, and it seems that surprisingly Shinako recalls much more details (also I get my confirmation I really crush on her when she has long hair). She does care about Rikuo doesn't she ? It gives more power to the "I hope you were as pushy as Rou", they seem to try making us realize that Shinako was indeed in love with Rikuo but that it was his duty to make the move due to her past trauma (and he confessed far too late). Rikuo really is desperately spineless, gosh.

Regarding the fact she showed up at the Christmas Eve Rikuo invited her to.

ToraiS said:

Sure it seems like a wishy-washy afterthought that she decided to go to the party that Rikuo's in, but consider that she got invited by Rou first; courtesy and such. Though she promptly booked their sad little christmas party once family went out to the picture by "smooth" lines by Rou. It's different this time because Shinako was given a choice. She could have easily stayed and risked being in a risque situation with Rou, or spend the christmas eve with Rikuo which is also a risque situation. Albeit late to the party, she picked the latter which speaks growth from her indecisive self.

I don't really have any opinion right now. I mean she knows everybody so one could argue that she's just considering spending some time with friends, not necessarily coming for Rikuo. We'll see during the next episode what goes on.

Also Shinako does imagine the possibility of being in a relation with Rou. Her reaction when she's alone with him shows she does think it would make sens, that it could be possible. But I guess she knows the shadow of the late-brother would prevent such a relation, as we were able to see in ep.7.

Haru should just leave things as they are, also I'm starting to get stalker vibes from her. I have trouble with her being sooo in love with Rikuo : it could be considered as cute and touching, but their backstory is empty so it really does not touch me.

Right now I'm like :
Haru X Rou
Rikuo meets truck-kun
Shinako meets someone worth of her

This doesn't have much bearing on the episode but Fukuda's wife is really attractive lol

Anyway, still going strong after 9 episodes! Will be waiting to see what happens at that Christmas party. Feels weird seeing Haru so down and sad...

Time passes fast in this anime.
At the start of the episode was the middle of October. By the end of the episode was already the ending of December. No wonder Haru was feeling so defeated during that day, she had no news about Rikuo all that time.

And talking about time...
I don't know. It's just me forgetting things or the anime is changing little bits as much as it's cutting? I don't remember Rou making a portrait of Shinako like that. But one thing for sure... they cut THAT character. Maybe I can still keep a little hope burning for the next episode, because can imagine that with Shinako leaving so early Rou will go to the Art School's christimas party, and he'll meet Haru there making a delivery for Kyouko's friend. With the two there in that party there's still a little chace that SHE will appear.

But anyway...
THat scene with the portrait... did you noticed? One thing that this anime is putting a lot of effort in corporal animation, giving each character their own clear personality. This pays back in scenes like that, with moments between characters that knows each other well enough that they don't need to spoke to communicate. That whole scene had a lot of that, just silence and the characters moving, beautiful.

EDIT:
This episode had an extra.
My optimistic prevision failed!

The anime will really cut that minor character, along with everything else, and if things continue this way maybe it'll even do the "impossible" and cut the model.
where did you find the extra?????

They are displayed on Abema TV. Also it's likely the 6 OVA that will make episodes 19 to 24 will not be available on CrunchyRoll as they seem not to have the licence (yet ?). This is why they do not display these extra.

So, IMAO the fact that Shinako still drops by to cook for Rou's family , despite the fact that Shinako says that she loves Rou and his father only meant one thing, she sees Rou as a replacement, and Rou's dad doesn't even tries to dissuade Shinako to from coming back, looks like that he's either an opportunist give that help like hers don't come by too often or just a dumb old man.....Cu'z if I were that old man I would have ask Shinako to move on , find a new love and never come back , I'll even change the lock so that she doesn't have anymore access to the loft.

Okay, so we're now halfway through and the show is SOO good. At this point, Haru should just move on. Tbh, she deserves a better person and the one who isn't confused about what decisions he should make.
Also, despite the fact that I don't like Rou, the 15-20 seconds of Rou making the portrait of Shinako was the best moment of this episode for me (because of the silence in the background, the sound of pencil strokes and the character reactions...they just felt so natural and realistic)

What the hell! The fact of having a narration where Haru is practically present but does not participate in the story of the plot, puts me in a bit of a bad mood, perhaps because it is shown in a state of mental prostration or because not being an active part, you cannot enjoy its charge positive. The character of Rikuo, abandoned his situation of social marginalization, as often happens, feels relaxed and takes less care of the details and a little flies over certain messages that are sent to him. However, although not the best of the episodes, it contributes as a macroscopic element of the puzzle to create a broader and more fundamental element in order to complete the story, since this episode did not give the feeling of being useless from the beginning. Despite this, the episode lasted too short, damn it!

I beg to differ. A LOT happened. For one, Shinako is putting in the effort I roasted her for not doing. Gotta wait next week to see what she tells Rikuo at this party.

I'm not going to read this manga until after the anime finishes.

My thoughts exactly - Haru-chan can fill my Xmas socks anyday.

You'll need to find the Episode 9 Extra scene if you don't understand.

In fact you need to find the "Extra scenes" for episodes 1-4 & 9 as they changed my perception of some of the characters....

It was only for a few seconds, but Haru really looked cute in her Santa dress. ^_^

Anyways, the episode flew by quickly and as for the plot, while it felt slow, the interactions between Rikuo and Shinako, as well as Haru's own struggle, still felt as important as ever.

The advice that Haru got from her boss at the Milk Hall was very good. If Haru can't get any progress made between her and Rikuo, then it might be best for her to move on. It hurts me to type that, but it's true, though. >.<

Although Shinako's progress with Rikuo is still sluggish, at least she and Rou are getting along much better now. Even better, she's putting her foot down a bit on him if he tries something funny, as was proven when she left after he made a suggestion that she should loosen her top a bit when he was sketching a portrait of her.

9 episodes down and 9 to go. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens between Rikuo and Shinako next time. =)

Ah man, I'm tired already. I really wanted to like Shinako n all, but at this point, scenes with her are just the same stuff on repeat from prior episodes. Yes she went to uni with Rikuo we already know/seen it, in the rest she's still playing the same back and forth game as ever. Rou is making me skip half the episode too.

Haru is going way too far for Rikuo too, she already got quite formally rejected, best would be just to move on. Not like I wouldn't forgive anything to Haru :P
If she gives up then all this effort was a waste, if she does not then it wasn't, only the effort hasn't borne fruit just yet. (Tho if it wasn't an anime, she better realize when it doesn't worth the effort anymore, and that time would be right about now.)

"Haru should just move on." That all I keep reading in this thread. Do you people not understand how fucking love works? It's hard to just get rid of those feelings. She knows what she was getting in for and this episode showed us the viewers that she understand the hardships. Luckily her support (her boss at Milk Cafe) is giving her some insight on Male and Female relationships so she continues to pursue Rikuo.

Rikuo now starting to question what he really feels as well. He's fighting feelings within himself of wanting to be with Shinako but also the work that Haru is putting in as well.

Shinako is finally getting some development when she realized the situation Rou and her were in when they were celebrating Christmas together.

Slow paced for an anime like this is good and it's working! Not everything has to be fast paced.

Honestly, Rou is such a weird case to me. Sometimes I dislike him and others (like in this episode), I'm totally okay with his actions. I appreciate he acted mature enough to apologize for imposing himself onto Shinako and honestly, his comment wasn't really that bad. Shinako... there was no need to act like a flustered high-school girl.

On the other hand, I was asking for more Haru last week and though she got a fair amount of screentime this episode, nothing relevant was added to her character in the end. Her reason for liking Rikuo so much remains unknown and despite having been technically rejected already, she still wants to "beat" Shinako in this odd competition/war where only she thinks she has with her teacher. At this point I'm not sure if I should be amazed by her teenage determination or worry about her lack of common sense. Can we bring Minato back for her, please?

Anyways, quite nostalgic episode this one was. Featuring lots of retrospection moments for both Rikuo and Shinako while giving some insight into Haru's troubled mind. Though being honest, Haru's scenes were so inconsequential they all could have been fused into one single sequence with her deciding to move on or keep fighting for MC's love. That way, the story progression would have felt less slow but well.

"I don't remember why we became close, but the more we did, the harder it became to tell her I liked her." By the way, first time I can relate to Rikuo and only nine episodes had to pass by, yay.

It's really difficult to keep track of time in this show. Wish they gave more indicators to solidify the points in time of when the scenes are taking place. Other than that it wasn't a bad watch.
Rikuo improving himself furthermore is nice to see. Shinako is still way too confused and needs to make up her mind.

Felt sad for Haru though, the scene where she's thinking she started a losing war was just sad, albeit true.

"I don't remember why we became close, but the more we did, the harder it became to tell her I liked her."

This line by Rikuo really rang with me. This is one of the most common thing that happens. When a person falls for someone they have gotten really close with, it somehow becomes way more difficult to tell them how you feel. Cause rejection isn't the worse thing that comes to mind, it's the fear of losing that person, someone you share things with, someone who's your emotional support. When all that goes through your head, you just freeze.

I truly hated how Shinako treated Rou (and I ain't a huge fan of this character). I can bet he was extremely happy and delighted to finally spend a Christmas with her, as they did by the past. I also believe he decided to draw her portrait to show his skill/hard work and to please her but... she just decided to leave. However what really triggered me was the fact she straight up went to Fukuda's place : it appeared as a shelter she could use to avoid Rou. I might be wrong and no one would ever be able to provide an answer, but I'm sure she would have stayed with Rou if she had not been aware of the Christmas party hosted Fukuda & hier wife.

I love Haru. She is easily the best character. I am with everybody who said it would be better if she woke up to reality and moved on. She deserves a lot better than Rikou. Shinako...Rikou actually sort of deserves her. She is terrible and he really isn't much better, to be honest but in his case, there is still some hope left that gets his act together. By now I have come to the conclusion that the show will very probably neither have a happy ending nor a clean resolution. I think everybody will simply drift apart and life will go on, one way or another.

I found it dumb. But man, Rikuo always forgettable about her past, really dude? Shinako just too kind letting that Rou had a pseudo happiness on the christmas night. She never had a chance to pass that shitty memories with her dead crush and him. And Haru, the aggresive girl, what were you doing in that late night? Your Rikuo just do shit. But, man, you never surrender, eh? Poor her. Your patience must be tested, there. I just hope you could survived till the last battle. Thats it.

Sad for Haru to have a lonely christmas, realy hope she will get a happy end. I really think Shinako should take a bit more distance from Rou (leaving Rou there when he became intrusive was a step in the right direction imo) even though she wants to take care of the family.
