Miyokichi is still so damn fine. Sukeroku (sp?) is still the same beta cuck.

Goddammit this fucking anime.
Sukeroku's eyes in the opening startled me in a way that I started to cry. And I don't usually do that.
That ending. Miyokichi and Sukeroku. Omg. "You finally spoke", just... Oh my god? The angst. This episode ended with me crying like a baby. I think Yakumo either died or is in the hospital. SUKEROKU CALLING YAKUMO "BON". I JUST... UGH. I need a hug.

It sent shivers down my spine! Miyokichi's senile smile gave me the chill. And then Shin-chan appears and calls him Bon, I lost it! This season is already so much better than the previous season. I cannot find any negative point from this anime so far. Magnificently done!

They made a little change in the OP o_O

Those red eyes creeped me the hell out.
It threw me off so much that for a second I was wondering if I was going completely senile for not noticing those before, but immediately i'm like no they definitely weren't red before.
This episode- what an amazing atmosphere!

Seems like game over for him... but it certainly was quite a performance with eerie and ominous ending.

I wonder how Kontasu copes with this as her ultimate wish was to kill him and it was her who sparked the incence. But it was like... he actually planned it.

Everything was going down at the end and I had to violently sit up straight in my chair. Jfc, like I was called on in school although I was paying attention but I still wasn't expecting to be called on. Oh my gosh.

Damn ! Yakumo can't die like this, it's too soon T_T. The change in the opening foreshadowed it.

The last scene was incredibly powerful. He is choking in real life but hallucinating that Shin is the one who is strangling him.
Also i love how little ego Yotaro has, putting others above himself. Saying his master
is much better than him and he will never be better than him, never doing anything to Konatsu, respecting her feelings, not acting on his ego, since there's not much of it anyway. And saying that he loves rakugo more than he loves himself.

Looks like the past, Miyokichi and Sukeroku came to haunt him
It's not like his fault entirely
But it seems he seems guilty about it

Sukeroku has a vinyl recording of his rakugo. I wasn't expecting that haha.

It's so fun seeing Yotarou interact with Konatsu and Shinnosuke like a family. It's very touching. Shinnosuke enjoys watching Yotarou perform too. Yotarou really loves his job and truly enjoys rakugo.

I love it when Yakumo does rakugo, I get sucked into his storytelling and I can't look away. Yakumo saw Sukeroku and Miyokichi's ghost/image. He was in that place with candles, candle = life. Maybe it's a sign that he's going to die soon. :(

The first half of this episode is calm. They are invited to do Rakugo and Yotaro finished his tattoo.
Second half start with Yotaro's Rakugo. Like usual, he made everyone laughed. And then, comes Kikuhiko's turn. Started slowly, but when the incense lighted, it became an eerie performance. And the climax was when Miyokichi showed up, Kikuhiko was losing his consciousness. He finished the performance and he collapsed after that.
That last scene, Sukeroku(Shin) throttled Kikuhiko(Bon) had so much meaning on that.

Yotaro that will be up for the next turn was feeling scared and I think it will influence his performance. Really good episode 5/5.

Konatsu seemed touched that Kikuhiko was depending on her for part of the performance. Maybe she has emotions for him other than "I want to kill you" after all. :3

Yikes, Kikuhiko passed out on stage...it almost seemed like he was going "towards the light" at the end, but perhaps Sukeroku strangling him was telling him that it wasn't his time to go yet?
"No, son, you may not have your body pillow at the dinner table!"

What an amazing performance, and then Miyokichi appearing during it was really something. Wow.

I thought Shin's red eyes were in the OP all along and that I only just noticed it. Turns out that it was done for this episode, and we see why at the end of this episode. So ominous...
I really hope Shin is saying sorry because he's stopping Bon from moving on into the afterlife :(

Did he just...die? I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING :,0

I know he was getting along in his twilight years but there wasn't even a goodbye. Unless the preview was just teasing a reveal that he was alright.

Also the cinematography continues to impress! The panning shots and lingering on smoke was super well done. We don't get to see stuff like this in normal anime. Kekkai Sensen is the only other show I can think off.

Yotaro accepted his past and completed his tattoo. That's some good character development right there. It's amusing that Yakumo didn't agree to the family performance out of acknowledgment to Yotaro, but rather only because he sort of had to. Both of the rakugo performances we got were great. Yakumo's health is definitely deteriorating, and at a fairly alarming rate at that. I agree with some of the other people here - I hope he is able to recover and perform again. I still believe Yotaro has stuff to learn before the Eighth Generation can pass on the torch.

Oh crap, I was afraid something like this would happen sooner or later.

But I guess Shin is going to tell him that Rakugo still needs him.

I thought for the most part, the episode was decent, nothing that special for me but pretty enjoyable but man the final few minutes changed it by a lot to become a damn good episode by the end. Impeccable directing with that scene with the Yakumo's collapse and visions of Miyokichi and Sukeroku where the intensity was through the roof right there. Even Sukeroku's eyes in the OP were red this time around to show a tease of the inevitable in a sense. I kind of wish the opening as a whole didn't have so many visual metaphors indicating what would happen to Yakumo for this portion of the anime till the end not gonna lie given how it could have been even more tense and alarming with no expectations surrounding his mindset throughout all of this.

The jumpscare with his eyes in the op...

When Miyokichi appeared I actually felt disturbed/like there was some kind of impending doom, so intense... And the room with all those candles was just like in Shinigami... The music there was phenomenal too.
With the next episode preview, I have no clue if Yakumo is alive or what
Everything about this show is truly like nothing I've ever watched before

And so it comes full circle, what an ending!! Yakumo is definitely getting up there in age, and the narrative has done such a good job showing the nuances of it; his grouchiness, lack of appetite, child-like tantrums/sensitivities, everything has been building to his final moments. I don't think he'll pass right away, but it's getting there.

I love Yotaro, he may be an idiot, but he's sincere and honest.

What I love about this series is that time moves on mercilessly. Yakumo is haunted by his past, and we watch as rakugo changes with the times, taken on by different individuals.
