| It is indeed a contrivance that Genkai has to come back from death, but I still feel it was well earned. This entire arc was about Toguro and Yusuke. Genkai was a sort of anchor for both of them. Without her guidance, neither characters get to have fulfilling arcs of their own by the Dark Tournament's end. So as much as it is an ass-pull, it's equally an effective plot beat and worth happening the way it did. What Toguro said to Genkai is true. Without that safeguard of a real disciplined teacher to look out for Yusuke, he's almost certain to fall into the same trappings he ultimately did himself. Most of these things are also concretely laid out beforehand. Kuwabara's "death" worked because it inverts the last exchange he and Yusuke had together; Yusuke lied to Kuwabara and now Kuwabara lies to Yusuke. Although this isn't as cleanly done as that, we knew they'd get a wish out of winning the tournament. Sakyo's actual death was for his own character arc. There's no reason (as far as we were aware as viewers) that the wish should've been taken away because of that or the arena being destroyed. Overall, the Dark Tournament was fantastic, and I can't wait to see where the next arc takes us! |
| Wow! So many death merchants! I always say that shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man did a number on anime fans. They just want characters to get slaughtered and call it peak fiction. I'm actually surprised that Hunter x Hunter fans are mad about this, because Hunter x Hunter had a major death fake out as well... I'll say that this arc was a 9/10 for me. It was a great arc overall, and it had the perfect conclusion. It really put Toguro's character in perspective for me, and why he was a nice guy, but wanted to kill Genkai. He sort of blames them both for their students dying, but he mostly blames himself. He basically tormented himself as a way to atone. Even after death, he wants the worst punishment, to atone. Even when people try to tell him that he doesn't deserve such a punishment, he requests it anyway. I think Genkai coming back ultimately shows that her way of thinking wasn't flawed. The reason that Yusuke and his friends wanted her to come back, was because she had built up good will. She made friends and had people who cared about her. Legacy and the beauty of aging and passing things down to the next generation. That's the core of humanity, and what separates them from demons and psychopaths. I will say that this arc had a few flaws. Treating Kuwabara as a joke and butt monkey got old after a while, and the joke was barely funny. |
| This was a great arc. There were a lot of good fights and interesting characters. I'm excited to see how the story will progress from here on. What kind of opponents will he face now? Will he fight beings even stronger than Toguro? |

| I can't take seriously all this thing with Toguro. Genkai dying was dumb, so it's nice she's back, it's not like this show have any stakes so why not just keep the cool characters as long as the story keep going :p |
| Great arc! Hopefully, the next one will live up as well. I'm not so sure how I feel about Genkai being alive again. But it made sense since there is a prize for a champion and obviously, Yusuke would wish her back. After watching this episode, I just couldn't dislike Toguro at all. I thought that he was so evil before. He killed Genkai for no reason. And guess what? There was a purpose. It was all planned out. He killed her to boost Yusuke's strength. Then he made sure Genkai's body was preserved. Of course, I believe Toguro gave it all to that fight and not just let Yusuke win on purpose. Now I understand why he was so contended when Yusuke finally defeated him. |
 She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did! |
