At this point Yuji is in a great moment of uncertainty after many things happening, all of which place a a lot of stress on him - the appearance of the Silver, Phelas's arrival and Johan's release, the battle with Hecate and the resealing of the Reigi Maigo, the strange spell insignia placed upon it...
Even after having these many things happening at once and the storyline holding together rather well, the show still has time to develop the concerns of Yoshida-san about her growing distance from Yuji as she becomes more estraged from his world.
In addition, one of the things that really impressed me is that at this time of great turbulation in Yuji's life, the anime has Yuji's father take a moment to just tell him that everything will be ok (even if he doesnt know his situation). This is a really important thing for Yuji because at this time he is in desperate need of some sort of anchor or reasurrance and it is truly meaningful and uplifting when it comes from one's father - all the more so because Yuji does not often see his father.
This attention to every aspect of a character's development and situtation in the midst of fast-paced and intriguing storyline I believe for me is really setting Shakugan no Shana apart from the rest.

I actually like both the opening and ending... [ending reminds me of Slayers :P...]

I think it's really cruel to give something like that to Yoshida :|. I never liked her, but I don't want her to die like this. And if she does, she's stupider than her Bleach correspondent, Orihime X(!!

Pheles has to be a manipulator of some sort because what she said to Kazumi makes no sense.

& Oh okay, so now Yuji wants to get stronger. -_-

Nooo, Yoshida, throw it awaaay! I despise you being in this story in the first place, you only act as a poorly-conceived rival to Shana, designed for the sole purpose of constantly getting in the way, but if you go out and sacrifice yourself to save him, I'll just hate you even more.

I don't see why Yoshida loves Sakai that much, Shana has a reason

A wind-down episode. Time to let things sink in~ It was a good "bridge episode" as others have said, and it sets up the series nicely for what's to come.

Seems like it's practically guaranteed that Yoshida will end up disappearing if she holds onto that Hougu... or is that just me? That was the feeling I got.

Nice to see that Margery's got a firm grip on herself. ._. But it's really sad that it took severe damage to Ogata to make her realise it. (I'm still kind of confused as to whether Ogata is a Torch or not. It seems to have been implied, even by Margery, but it doesn't seem like anyone's forgetting her over time or anything.)

Wondering what it means at the end that Hecate looked like she liked having that little birdie approach her. Konoe's memories are in her, right...? I wonder if Konoe actual felt genuine emotions too, and if those got transferred to Hecate...

Hecate was cute at the end.

Yoshida gets way too much screentime! It's beginning to put me off this show, I hate how much time is spent on her moaning and putting a downer on everything. She isn't needed!

And the hougu obviously doesn't kill her, since Pheles is all about true love and that - it's probably something to show that Yoshida loves Yuji enough to die for him. Which makes me fear a Yoshida x Yuji ending. If it does, this'll be the worst anime ever!

Hopefully Yoshida ends up using it, then we won't have to deal with her shit anymore.

Nice episode, seeing Yuji learn to use Blutsauger (spelling?) is pretty epic. The past episodes have been pretty great.

I love the new OP, it's amazing. All you guys who say you don't like it just need to get used to it. In time you will see my friends :)

Anyway, onto the actual episode. Is it just me or is Yoshida getting a bit too much screen time? I think it is fairly obvious Yuji is never going to end up with her.

At the same time I don't think Ike has a chance with her at all. It's a messed up love web!

Fujita > Ike > Yoshida > Yuji >< Shana

And yes, I think the hyper-active girl from the festival has the hots for Ike, she loves dragging him all over the place. Poor Ike ^_^

That's one huge death flag Pheles have put on Yoshida xD
I don't think she'll be alive by the end of the season...

Yuuji have decided to take his training further. Maybe one day, he won't be a burden :P

I wonder why the Bal Masqué want to awake the Silver. It look like Hecate is also ''fusionnating'' with Konoe from her reaction at the end.

god i wish that thing really does kill her. She takes up way to much screentime for a character that contributes nothing of real importance to the show.

I'm dropping this bullshit. I found things to like in the first season but this one has no redeeming quality for me. I may have enjoyed it years ago but right now it's just bland and generic. However I will keep listening to the soundtrack since it's awesome, including the "new" opening and ending :)

This. This very episode. I like how personal things are getting. This is the show where character motivations matters.

And Kazumi gets probably a lot better treatment than Shana right now. For her to receive a way how to become Pheles' flame haze and die as a human, that's really brutal. In a way, Pheles selfishly gave her a way to suicide herself. When one starts to think what she must be going through, I really feel for her. No wonder she's torn about it. Probably best developed character in the series and pretty much a mirror to how normal people have to feel next to battle-hardened warriors.

But I also like what they are doing with Tanaka. His story is pretty simple, yet he makes the series believable in a way that he represents the normal guy who is forced to see all the suffering and have not guts to be part of this world anymore, he just wants his careless days back and his love endangered no more.

Also, nice to see that Hecate is finally being by Konoe's experience. Would be interesting to watch how everything evolves. And I really wonder if Ogata goes through her erased memory and remembers her, would be nice struggle for Tanaka too.

As a sidenote, I really like new ED, it has very bittersweet undertone and it suits this series a lot.

That was a harsh thing to do to Kazumi. Pheles practically asked her to sacrifice herself to protect Yuji. Meanwhile Yuji doesn't even state his answer to Kazumi about her love. Tanaka and Satou are finally going to get some development. I think Bal masque is trying to use the Silver as their puppet. I agree with the comment above mine about Yoshida being a well written character. She gets too much hate.

Kazumi should try using that cross. Maybe she won't die and she'll gain powers from it instead.

The real mystery is, how did Ball Masque capture Silver.

In retrospect, what Pheles did and said to Kazumi is such a horrible thing. She gave her a way to join Shana and Yuji in the supernatural side of things, but she has to kill herself.

I love what this series is doing with its human-aware-of-the-supernatural characters. Kazumi, Keisaku and Eita all represent different ways normal humans like any of us would react to a world full of deadly battles and monsters. Keisaku wants to embrace it, Eita is rejecting it, Kazumi is uncertain on where she wants to stand.
