The first episode is consistent as it gets. I can't believe this is being animated... Truly a milestone to me. Here we already have a good idea of the worldbuilding and the characters. Oh Frieren, she will be the waifu of the season...

The animation is beautiful so far, and the story is still as emotional as the manga. I always liked how Frieren brings a twist to classic adventure tropes (e.g. fictional species/races), because the genre hardly ever tackles the difference in perspective or life beyond the journey's end (hence the title).

The OST and the artistic direction are pure pathos, got chills looking at the grass moving and the camera usage. The story's pace is remarkably slow and the characters are lifeless, kind of a bummer since I expected this to have more substance at first. I know that that is the direction of the genre, but I don't sense too much building below the surface and I hope for my sanity that they are not going to cannibalize the concept of the end of life

@RobynGatomon you gave Arifureta a 9 and Digimon a 10

I love this argument, 'you like this so that means your opinion means nothing'. what that really means is you don't actually have an argument for why Frieren is apparently worth being rated 9, because you like things you're told to like and not because you have any opinions or thoughts of your own.
@RobynGatomon
Not here to fight, just to discuss.
1st, while I think Billybub's argument is weak, there is a point that if someone's taste is bad, you are less likely to approve their other opinions. It's human nature.

Next to answer your original question:
A lot of people give marks according to how well the show conveyed it's genre. You can't expect to give Arifuete a low mark for being a bad historical show, since it's not. Every show is rated by it's genre.
Friren is a fantasy-drama-slice of life genre, and it does it well. It has a very "dull" atmosphere to make it more realistic and I'm guessing a lot of people like it, since it is not common in anime.
Next we have the more objective side - stuff like art quality, animation and music. Again, Frieren does really well here. (If we do compare to Arifuete - it has one of the worst CGI scenes I have seen.)
after that we have the manga viewers. They bring a lot of say to the rating since they make a large chunk of it. So far Frieren has done a good job adapting to the source material. I'll compare to Arifuete again - it had a lot of hype, but fell flat due to the terrible direction, animation and pacing.
Lastly, and most importantly... a lot of people don't rate the show until they are finished with it, or at least a large way into the show. Therefor, the ratings only really show what people think only after the show ends.

I appreciate your answer, you make very good points. What I didn't go into with the other commenter (because I didn't feel the need to defend my choices to someone like that) is that not everything I rate highly are masterpieces, in fact I love several anime with a lot of flaws, Arifureta is definitely not perfect and I know that, I just really enjoyed it anyway so I ranked it as such.

My argument with Frieren is that, in my opinion, it is not terrible by any means but it is not a masterpiece, and it is being overhyped as one because a lot of people are saying so on the internet and people will follow the trends of the internet instead of having their own opinion. is Frieran okay? Sure. Do I think that that many people should legitimately consider it a masterpiece? Absolutely not. Do I think a lot of those people just think its a masterpiece because they were told it is one? Definitely. You're welcome to disagree with me, that's fine, that's just what I think.

PS the cgi dragon in Arifureta is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen, good grief πŸ˜‚

Beautiful first episode with a slight feeling of melancholy. Most likely due to Himmel's musings and later death. Due to Freiren's exceptionally long life, she took time for granted, as she feels regret over not getting to know her party members better.

I don't know the typical lifespan for an elf in this verse but I'll guess that it's around a millenia or more. It's easy to recognize how much of a trifle 50 years must have felt for someone like her.

I'm glad Heiter is trying to help her grow by taking on an apprentice. He knows she's trying to learn about humans, with slow progress. He likely thinks the master and apprentice approach will benefit Freiren just as much as it will Fern.

Loved the first episode.

Has a nice aesthetic comfy vibe to it but also carries the emotional aspect and the setting is amazing as well.

The heartfelt journey of a 4 man party coming to an end and already one of them the hero himmel being given a farewell with a beautiful get together of meteor shower. Frieren being an elf having to witness hundreds of years of coming and passing. Her emotions, regrets, bonds, experience and pov of living through all these years of events. I loved these 4 peoples bonding moments though briefly shown for now.

Himmel being a charismatic kind hero with bit of goofiness and loved his converstations with frieren especially with the horn part, keeping it for over 50 years as a treasured momento from her. Its sad we get to see little of them.

Heiter an alcoholic priest. hes the funniest of them all and really calm understanding and caring. Saving Fern and raising her to be a mage so she can survive on her own and even requesting frieren to take her on as a student to ensure her future. Taking inspirations from himmels act of kindness.

Have to see more from eisen but he seems to be wholesome as well.

Fern is an interesting character too, showing development already as she wants to live up to helters expectations and wanting to prove his efforts werent in vain and let him pass away in peace. Shes quite talented as a mage and has the potential like frieren.

OP by yaosobi was quite the surprise for a fantasy series like this but liked it so far quite vibrant. The ED by milet was chefs kiss the visuals were stunning and eye candy totally mesmerizing.
Speaking of visuals madhouse has again lived upto the expectations delivering amazing art design, color palette usage and animations, saw some other studios involved as well like wit. But all the more better, really made me enjoy the episode even more and hoping to see more of it.

Mostly seeing from the opening, this is going to be like a second life/journey for freiren with new generation with fern and other boy in a party most likely and seeing her live throught it but with different approach where she understand and connects with the people she loves and cares for more and self development. Really invested in this from the get go so really looking forward to this.

This seems to be the first major work of the mangaka after 2 shorter mangas. So it kinda blows my mind seeing how hyped this anime is. With it receiving such a high production value anime and so much advertising.

That aside, wasn't the first episode supposed to be 2 hours long? Why was it split into 4 parts like the Kaguya-sama movie? How is this going to affect MAL's episode count?

I used to think 1-hour long first episodes were crazy but I guess 2-hour long movie-like first episodes are going to become more common now after the success of Oshi no Ko and now this...

I like slow-paced anime. And I also liked the first episode of Frieren. But I'm not sold on this anime yet. I like how smooth the animation feels. But the artstyle looks like typical fantasy anime to me.

I also didn't like the main character Frieren much. She's not very relatable. Probably cause she's an elf. Though this might change in later episodes.

I'll stick with it like I do with most anime. Since this technically was just a quarter of the first episode, I probably shouldn't judge it just yet.

Rated 9.03 on here at the moment? That's ridiculous, it's not nearly that good, after the first episode I'm on the fence over whether I'll even keep watching.

MAL continues to reward mediocrity when a show is expected and believed to be good before it has even been watched. That rating is purely the popular online opinion everyone is running with as always. 'I heard it was good so it's good!'. so tired of this. Same thing all over again like with bloody Bocchi the Rock and Oshi No Ko...
@RobynGatomon Almost every overhyped anime gets over a 9.00 rating on MAL in the first few weeks. That's because most of the time, the people who watch the show first are the fans and they tend to rate their favorite shows a lot higher than others. This doesn't really mean much because over time the rating drops as more normal people start watching the show. You'll probably see the "real" rating after this show stops airing (which is at the end of Winter 2024) and more people watch this show to the end. However, I'd say to never take MAL scores seriously. The ratings on this site rarely make any sense.

It's a general rule of thumb to subtract around 2.00 points from new (post-2010's) and very popular shows and add around 2.00 points to old (pre-1990's) and forgotten shows to get a much more honest/accurate rating. That's because newer anime watchers tend to rate shows higher while older anime fans tend to be much harsher when rating things. Which can be really confusing since there's no real consistency.

Seems ok. There's not much effort put into the atmosphere, but there are small moments that focus on expressions that give them nice characterization. Might/might not wait 'til it's finished airing 'til I watch it through.

Don't understand why people are hating on the opening. YOASOBI is a talented duo. I like it.
