Well, ok episode. I like the build up for the mafia trrouble revolving around Atsushi. Now if we can just drop this comedy and focus on the action, that'd be great.
Don't worry, there'll be plenty of it ;)

Mmm that's reassuring. I definitely want to see more of what the characters have to offer or if they do once they remove this burden of a comedy mask and start the main drama and action. Since you seem to know what you're talking about, I'll look forward to it.

funny start with kunikida and his book.
also another ability user shows up - a nuisance for those who just quitted smoking.
atsushi getting more and more into the role of the annoying depressive pussy.
the agency shows how strong they actually are by completely demolishing the black lizard.

Well...I do quite agree that this episode had pacing issues. As an anime-only watcher, I liked the darker first half but it was pretty obvious that the second half dragged out a bit.

Apart from that, I still enjoyed it. We are only 4 episodes in for a 2-cour and I don't expect some massive or intense development at this stage. Heck...some animes take about 12 episodes to establish their characters before the actual plot does kick in.

/cough/ Steins;gate /cough/

Also an example of why not rushing the dev isn't always a bad thing.

And the show isn't a random action shounen people with 90% action, deal with it. There is action later when the antagonists "get real" but we're still in the character introduction here, although not in the "beginning of it" like in ep 1/2 where it was all about introducing Atsushi. Or rather than introduction, it'd be more accurate to say that we're still in the "world setting" phase.
There will be some other "filler-y" episodes (... I refuse tu call them fillers, a filler is usually not relevant to the plot, introducing characters or working on them IS relevant to the plot), if only for Rampo. It's better to introduce the world your story takes place in than to go into a mindless brawl hindering charadev because it's too focused on action to have a proper characterization for everyone from ep1. Some characters will have their characterization during the "plot-relevant action scenes", others will not. It's way better than a plot ridiculously far-stretched that try to introduce everyone at the same time, even characters not "compatible" with said scene.

Rather than "plot" and "fillers", I'd say that the struture there is "plot episodes" and "character-focused episodes". This episode being one for the agency as a whole, showing that they're not just helpless mooks no matter how port mafia was shown as terrifying in the last eps. The show already made it pretty clear that port mafia is dangerous, this ep jut shows that they're not the only ones. The climatic battles will happen later, after the intro, when the plot REALLY kicks in.

The show didn't progress that much, it could have been a special episode but I think the comedy, especially the ending, saved it all.
I'm starting to lose interest in the MC, he's as annoying as those flashbacks repeated everytime. Hope to see some character development and more focus on the plot.

DAMN! i was worried for nothing.
in the beginning the old man and the rest of the mafia was looking cool and OP even i thought the people from the agency might not stand a chance if they fight this kind of people. but in the second half........LOL....i felt like i just got trolled. so easly, without any sweat. and i think that was cool xD

overal it was a very good episode imo.
looking foward for the next episode.

It's not a good idea to make fools out of your main bad guys right after you convince us that they are badass... how is the viewer supposed to respect the antagonists if they are all awful?

Given the outcome of this episode, the Port Mafia is zero threat, therefore rendering this whole show pointless?

This show injects too much cliche humour for any serious themes to be taken seriously.

What the... just like that!?? A powerful opponent with an interesting object 'bending' ability, I was hoping for some death matches with the agency but it's over in the blink of eye and turned into some comedy. No battle or power demonstration at all from the agency and they ended up winning. Seriously..!!???

I was impressed by the 1st half which focused on the ruthlessness of the Black Lizard but suddenly 2nd half turned them into a mere joke group. I'm kinda losing hope in this show's seriousness โ•ฎ(โ•ฏโ–ฝโ•ฐ)โ•ญ

An anime should have more or less set the right tone for itself by now. And the current tone is not set out for anything particularly meaningful.
Entertaining, yes. But this anime has enough serious moments for me to think that it does want to be taken kind of seriously. I can't do that with all this back and forth false tension and endless comedic relief.

I saw it more as the entire Port Mafia being the "big bad" but fair point.
In that case, all my hopes rest with Akutagawa and I sincerely hope he makes for a decent villain with depth.

After the 3rd episode I was really looking forward to finding out more about Dazai's past as the member of Port Mafia, so not seeing Dazai in this episode was quite disappointing. I thought I'd see much more action, considering the Black Lizard's appearance, but the "fighting" scene was over way too soon.

- Not enough Dazai-san
- Some parts of it were boring
- The flashbacks are dull
- The last part was good but made the suspension leading up to it irrelevant, which is kind of frustrating

i thought this episode was okay, I just didn't like the whole beating the ambush up so easily. I liked how Atsushi cared so much about the agency and wanted to leave just, so they wouldn't be targeted and his whole internal struggle in this episode. Throw that out the window cause the agency can take an armed ambush any day because who needs to have stakes in a show. This made me have an impression that there just going to steam roll everything with nothing intresting happening, and the joke they sacrifice this for wasn't worth it.

Okay, I liked this episode. The twist at the end was pretty hilarious but two issues:
1.Not enough Dazai.
2.These flashbacks are annoying as fuck.
I think Dazai will show up a lot more next episode, or at least more than he did here, so it doesn't bother me that much, but if I have to see the same damn flashback with the same damn dialogue(for the most part), I'm going to get pissed.

There is nothing wrong with having different tastes from someone else. People are allowed to have opposite opinions. You can like it, I can dislike it. Neither of us is wrong or right. It's just personal preferences.

It established the power of the Mafia, but it also showed just how strong the Agency is. When he ran in to find them just annoyed had me grinning ear to ear.

Damn, I wouldn't mind getting that surgery from her. She's sexy.

While I like this show a lot, I feel like not a lot has happened. It just seems like a lot of back and forth that feels like we're at a standstill. We need some more significant hints to happen to help push this forward.

Wasn't a fan of the rape scene. Just because its a male victim doesn't make it ok.

I don't know if you're being serious, but this made me chuckle. It's quite clearly a medical operation, surely with slight sexual innuendo, but the act of actual sex happening is not implied.

However, I do feel that in general males getting raped is a problem that nobody acknowledges and victims are ridiculed. Good to see that someone actually has a sensible viewpoint on the subject, but this is not a very effective springboard for those sort of discussions.

Great episode, even I personally dislike Atsushi's way of thinking ("I'm getting away from the Agency, so that they won't get hurt because of me"). Yes, he cares about them, but also he's a bit naive, since they will obviously get hurt either way.
And Akiko................ I don't like her at all. I hope she'll die. :P

I think it's so funny that they had to name a character after a real person... Akutagawa Ryuunosuke was a real person who lived in the first half of 20-th century...

Not only that, it seems there's also an Edogawa Ranpo character.

Tanizaki must be gay or something, because that "recovery" method looked pretty good.

I feel really trolled at the end of the episode. They made the old man and his men looking badass and cool to later get them defeated and throwed away of the window like nothing. Kinda dissapointing, because I would have liked seeing an epic battle. Oh, well...

Atsushi's flashback being repeated again and again it's becoming annoying.

I cannot help but think that the blonde woman's gaze in this scene is supposed to look intimidating, but I found that actually very cute :v

Lol. They made those port mafia guys look scary and badass, only to be rekt by the agency. Looking like pushovers. I could already tell that the agency guys are very capable since no one panic or worry if they get raided. I could already tell since episode 2 that there'll be running gags mixing seriousness and comedy but it didn't ruin the show for me. Agency guys weren't even serious making the mafia look like pushover and just throw away out of the window.

I'm already liking this anime.

I feel like throughout the show Kunikida is going to be my face palm guy. I thought it was going to be Dazai but its apparent that it will definitely be Kunikida.

Lol when Kunikida couldn't find his glasses when they were on his head that is me when I'm talking on the phone and someone asks me to look something up I end up trying to look for my phone.
Let’s say I posed this question to you: “Can all human souls be bought with money or not?” Now remember, the keyword here is “all”. The answer is “There are times when you can buy them, and other times, not,” right? The human being… sometimes he’ll uphold his pride and conscience even if he’s offered ten billion yen, and other times he’ll murder someone over one yen. ~Izaya Ohira (Durarara)

Here I was thinking there'd be forced angst & drama with some villains we all know the team would beat anyway, but they subverted my expectations completely. Yeah, they beat the crap outta them but didn't even try to draw it out...it was over in a matter of seconds lol

Also, Ranpo had me the moment he started drinking out of that bottle...and I'm pretty pleased that the next episode will be focusing on him!
