Alright, I think the reason why Little Busters got such a bad reception was the huge ass hype. Seriously, there was so much hype around it compared to Clannad. Look at the episode 1 polls. Clannad Episode 1: 295 votes. Little Busters Episode 1: 612. For Little Busters to live up to expectations, it would've had to have been like, the greatest anime in the entirety of man-kind. CLannad wasn't really being hyped up to much, thus lower expectations and more people being impressed because it exceeded expectations (which were low). Little Busters on the other hand had a VERY high expectation and therefore, people were disappointed because it didn't reach the really high expectations. I, personally feel the character routes in the Little Busters anime were more enjoyable and had more emotional scenes than Clannad season 1. I mean, Fuuko's arc, Kotomi arc and Nagisa arc didn't really make me tear up. Mio & Haruka did. I didn't start crying over Clannad until After Story 16. Little Busters has already gotten me to tears in the second arc. Overall, I don't think it's really fair to compare the polls with how the two got hyped.

The bad reception is more because the early episodes kinda suck, and don't detail any sort of plot, so it looks ultra generic to most people.
Little Busters is relatively popular in Japan and has a nice fanbase over there. There's more Little Busters art on pixiv than Clannad, for example.
Little Busters and Clannad are both more about their climax, which we haven't gotten to.
The overall reception of the series might recover after it finishes. Season 2 will definitely have a higher MAL rating, because most of the people watching will have already seen season 1.

Clannad does a slightly better job of introducing a plot early on, the drama club and stuff. I actually didn't watch the entire Clannad s1 anime, I read the manga, so my thoughts may be partially speculation. I'll watch it sometime to clear up my ideas. I feel like the individual routes are quite impactful in Little Busters, but I'd like to see how they are were in the Clannad anime. I'm pretty sure the routes weren't as terjerking in the original though.

I also feel like Clannad season 1's routes are practically unnecessary to After Story, whereas Little Busters is building up for something that will make the entire story feel essential.

Also, LB probably has a bad perception because they're listening to others who haven't played the VN, and are nitpicking and pointing out any subtle mistake JC Staff makes, or bashing the anime for stupid reasons. For example, people dislike some of the archetypes in Little Busters that Komari/Kud share, or the lack of an underlying plot, which is barely a valid argument in a slice of life comedy/romance series.

I think people will overlook the faults of the adaptation once the audience realizes what's going on with the plot.
Higurashi is considered an average adaptation in the first series, and a lot of explanations and altered, and the plot makes little apparent sense. There is also a lot more glaring problems in the animation and adaptation, but the explanations in the sequel series made up for that in the first season.

I wish I had data from the past from when Clannad and Higurashi aired, but I'd certainly bet that their first seasons' receptions increased once the second seasons aired.

If you actually look around on MAL, Clannad was getting A LOT of bad comments made about it. Maybe not to the degree of LB (due to high expectations), but certainly a lot. You can search around for info about Clannad and Higurashi in their respective forums and they're actually quite accurate.

One of the complaints about the earlier episodes of LB is that they're boring and unfocused, as if without purpose. It's rather sad because the purpose is clear from the beginning that they need to form a baseball team and that they need to discover the secret of the world. Clannad's purpose is to form the drama club and Kanon's purpose is to recover Yuuichi's lost memories, both of which aren't more compelling than LB's purposes. I don't remember the first few episodes of Clannad or Fuuko's arc being exceptional, but I did cry at the end of Fuuko's arc. As for the boring part, that can't be helped. I, for one, find LB to be entertaining.

Both Clannad and LB are sad, and although eliciting tears is the goal, failure to achieve this isn't necessarily a failure altogether. After watching Kanon, I've stopped expecting to cry rivers from Key stories; rather, just some sort of intense emotional response is fine with me. In fact, I went into Clannad thinking that it was just a stupid harem series, so that might have contributed to the surprise of being emotionally manipulated. Not crying for the first three arcs of LB doesn't matter much to me; Mio's arc is still beautiful and I look forward to reading it in the VN. I also can't wait to see what's up with Kud. Her shots in that promo video makes me go, "Kininarimasu!"

Kud's route will probably be the most emotional if they portray it correctly, and from the previews I would say that looks pretty good so far. I agree about the first part and how that their forming of the baseball team was the main focus and that it was enjoyable to watch. I think what most people saw as a problem was the 'filler' episodes which is actually just common route stuff. I can't say I wouldn't agree if I never read the VN, the first few episodes were pretty bland and felt rushed if you had no idea what was going on. I did find that it got much better going into the routes and finding the balance between emotional highs to lows seems to be working.

Good to see that I didn't really have to change any stances on Sasami.

I don't like her, it's fun to watch her suffer from Rin's antics.
And luckily the episode didn't try and make her anyone she wasn't.

She's still a rotten spoiled bitch...but she's not completely dead inside, someone that funny couldn't be.

An alright episode. Sequence of events a little different than in the VN, but I actually think the anime did a pretty good job of incorporating the other members into this. I did like how they showed Rin asking Sasasegawa for the number. The rap scene and the attack on Kengo were really well done. Also like how they made it apparent that right now Rin and Riki don't understand love at all.

I liked those scenes also, nicely done, JCS is really excels in animating common route. And with that sentence "I wonder if the day will come when Rin falls in love" Rin x Riki romance flag is now set.

This episode was a lot of fun, I do want to see more about A-2 guy 1. (I remember that but not his name...)
But I think we won't get to see him again, Sasasasasa Sasami is definitely a good friend of Rin although the two don't realize it at all. Next episode looks like it'll be about Kud again, I'm looking forward to it.

You're right, you won't see that dude again. Also good insight on the second part, again you would be correct in some sense.

Definitely my favourite episode so far mainly because I realised who my favourite character is.

Apart from Riki, who's had the most screentime, Rin is such a great character. It's hilarious in this episode the way she ignores social norms and just obliviously ploughs her way through conversation with brute force ^_^

I wish Rin had gotten more screentime in the previous episodes.

What were you expecting when you got into this anime?Anyways wait for refrain.....itll get better, much better so watch the anime and stick with it or you'll regret it when you see refrain in anime news network or MALs top 10 rating. Then again MALs rating system is flawed.

Yeah this is a random episode from Rin's common route. They're doing it now so they don't need to slow down the more pertinent material for her route in the second season. This ep was alright and funny at times.

She was great as always :) Especially with the cats and when she didn't give a fuck about Sasami on the baseball field.
Also, Kurugaya saying "With me, I hope!" when they thought Rin was in love with someone was priceless :D

Rin looked badass when she heard Sasasasa Sasami's name from the guy and started firing up :D

Mmmm, I noticed that the three times they received those kind of message, Rin was playing with the cat when Riki suddenly appeared. I wonder if that have some kind of meaning.

Those ojou-sama laugh are really funny. It seem like it's always the same VA too... But it must be my imagination.

Sasami makes a return this episode kind of focuses on her, She got worried about the cat at least she isn't that heartless so props for that

So that strange notes returned and this time its about love and importantly about Sasami, Although this turned out to be a love triangle

This turned out to be somehow a successful mission well Sasami likes Kengo and she wouldn't change her mind any time soon.
