@Sugram22 I wasn't talking about the anime's description of the subjugation spell. I'm talking about his actual actions and thoughts on subjugation not being consistent. He said he didn't want to use the subjugation spell on Fen because he didn't want to bring something like slavery into that world.
He was willing to let Fenrys (who is more dangerous than the bear) go on her way, especially after surrendering. The bear surrendered and he still made it a "subordinate" (Fen's words)/pet which is exactly what subjugation is. How is that different from what he said he doesn't want? Just because it's a cute? Just because it's not doing manual labor? It's the same thing. It's subjugation either way. Whether they have control of their minds or not, making the bear a pet is still a form of subjugation, just a different way of doing it.

I wouldn't roll my eyes so much if he hadn't made a big deal about it in the first place, because yeah whatever, pets. However, I can't just ignore that what he doesn't want to do and what he did are pretty much the same.
@Swiggy the bear chose to follow them, he just put on a collar that prevents him from going feral, cause otherwise he has to kill the bear

@Sugram22 I understand you're going by this anime's logic, and that's fine, great, and expected.
However, I'm pretty much saying that the logic the anime is presenting is not consistent-- or at the very least Flio's logic (or morals/ideals) isn't consistent.

Just from what you said, for the bear it was either be a pet or die. Not much of a choice, so I don't know if I'd say it chose to follow them. Regardless, I feel that there could have been more choices. The anime just decided this was the only way.

Before Fenrys even surrendered, Flio was adamant about not using the subjugation spell on her and not wanting slavery. Only after that did Fenrys actually surrender ONLY due to depleted magic... to which Flio said he couldn't kill someone who has surrendered and would be fine with letting Fenrys go as long as she didn't plan on hurting anymore humans.

However, as soon as the bear surrendered, Flio said they couldn't let it go, for some reason, and talks of making it a subordinate/pet began instantly. Again, Fenrys is stronger than the bear, but for some reason she was given the choice to go on her merry way as long as she didn't kill humans anymore while the bear was not given that choice.

As I understand it, the bear didn't seem like it would mess with them anymore, so making it a pet didn't seem like their only choice. The bear seemed to be able to understand speech as well, so an agreement could have been reached. Our B-knights (Balirossa, Blossom, etc.) mentioned that there were still Psychobears around, so it seems like it's not as if they needed to get rid of them all. They just needed to stop the ones that were coming to the city.

I don't know the full lore of this world, so in case the bear really would go right back to being aggressive if they simply let it go even after an agreement to not hurt humans, there are perhaps three things I can think of that Flio could have done so as not to contradict himself. He could have teleported the psychobear to a location where it wouldn't bother anyone (Delaveza Forest, where Flio was sent at first, would have worked), he could have kept the restriction spell on but let the bear go on its way (I think it'd still survive okay since the B-Knights said they couldn't even take out a single bear together), or Flio could have shapeshifted the bear without the restriction spell and then let it go on its way instead of keeping it (though I don't know how long the shapeshifting spell works on others). I'm sure I'm missing something with at least one of those, but with some of those options and probably even more, there are many other ways this bear could have been written into the story to still appear frequently while keeping Flio's actions and morals consistent, really.

Instead, for the sake of having a cute animal character around, they decided to make Flio a hypocrite. They also missed an opportunity to actually give him something that made him a lot more unique. Well... honestly they missed a few.

TL;DR: Be a pet or die isn't much of a choice. There were choices the anime could have presented that didn't involve Flio contradicting himself within the same episode because we already saw that Fenrys was given those choices, but they pretended making the bear a pet was the only way just for the sake of having a cute animal character.
