The animation is fantastic and every character has great voice acting but the story is such a mess. By the end I had no idea what was happening.

OK Miyazaki’s latest film that came out last year, what do I think of it personally? Well there’s quite a lot of good riding on it, animation is as always amazing to look at, the music is just spellbinding and the ending theme for this movie that plays for the credits is just unbelievable. I will say this is certainly one of the more darker films that Miyazaki has made in his long career for Studio Ghibli probably a lot more darker than say Porco Rosso but probably on the same level as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle in terms of tone.

I feel for some people it’ll be a bit harder to understand in terms of the concept cuz there’s so much symbolism that it kind of needs multiple rewatches to understand but I can look past it because the story itself is very well written. You won’t be able to understand it right away because it does go in deep with it’s narrative but it’s got enough that it’ll keep you engaged and interested at the same time.

It’s slow but things do change roughly around the second half in particular but I’d say it’s quite poetic in a beautiful way honestly. If your curious about seeing it dubbed, do so, it’s probably one of the best dubs we’ve got for the studio Ghibli stuff and I think Robert Pattinson is probably the best thing in the entire thing I mean the guy goes in with no experience in voice acting whatsoever and he literally smashes it out of the park with his portrayal of the titular Heron. So good that you don’t even recognise his voice half the time. It is that good of a performance.

It’s probably one of the only times where I feel Pelicans are scary normally they’re not but in this film especially when they are Mahito at the graveyard I was genuinely scared of them here.

Overall I’ll say it’s not my favourite when it comes to Hayao Miyazaki films but it’s pretty good for what it is. And I’ll give The Boy and The Heron an 8/10.

Watching new ghibli movies is interesting, some technical details are more modern but overall the artstyle and animation could be from 30 years ago. Its just timeless. I can never get enough of the background artwork. In a very weird way it reminds me of the old house my grandma lives in.

Very magical movie, I was certainly glued to my screen if only to answer the question "whats the point?". Im still not sure what the point was. But it doesnt bother me either, its not like the movie tried to build a grand plot.

Interesting that the setting is WW2 again.

Nothing much more to say, I doubt it will be a classic like most Ghibli movies but its entertaining enough to watch with someone else after a few years I guess and it looks nice.

PS: I wonder if this will actually be the last Miyazaki movie. I remember going to a small arthouse cinema 11 years ago to watch how the wind rises, expecting it would be his last as well.
In case this is the final one, I just hope Ghibli finds a new director. It would be a shame to lose this studio and the art it creates.

Very pretty... I don't really know how to feel about the movie without thinking on it for a while. Initial thoughts are just that it didn't feel quite satisfying

Awwww this was a beautiful movie to me man, to me this movie is about a boy who lost his mother and has to accept his new stepmother and I find that so endearing man the ending made me tear up man bc he finally accepted his birth mother is gone and is gonna die in a fire and that his new stepmother actually loves him even if she isn’t his birth mother🥹🥹🥹

Mahito’s stepmother is having a child which is going to become his baby brother or sister, so he goes on a fantasy adventure and during his adventure he becomes more and more attached to his stepmom and eventually calls her mother near the end of the movie when he enters the delivery room. If anything I’m not understanding the confusion that a lot of ppl have here it’s quite a simple story tbh and it’s a wonderful story at that 10/10 for me man Hayao Miyazaki thank you for this beautiful masterpiece🥹💐

Fun fact if you’re still reading this but I’m watching all the Ghibli movies backwards idk why but you’ll see my comments on Ghibli movies haha and I’m lucky to know that my final movie will be Nausicaa my favourite Ghibli film🥰🥰🥰🥰

This movie is quite philosophical in its nature. It reflects deeply upon the history of Japan, packing it into clever metaphors and symbols. You really need to watch it twice to really feel what Miyazaki was creating

The art style and animation is clearly 10/10
Sound and music is as well 10/10

But what's with the story Hayao.
Perhaps I am too stupid but a tiny bit of exposition would've done wonders.
The ending itself was incredibly rushed.
Mahito has to forget, why? Who knows.
Anyway it's 2 years after the war, the kid brother is there and they leave the house.
The end.

Why rush it that much.
Nothing with the grannies, no panorama of the house, not even physically leaving.
It might as well not have happened.

I am really more inclined in fantastical stories where some of the fantastical stays, even if just as a memory of the participants.

7/10 because of the 10/10s above.

@Tyon

You should learn the difference between rushed and abrupt. The ending is abrupt, not rushed.

That was a very important addition @JoeChip, I'll keep it in mind when I speak English as a foreign language.
