That's how a standard long anime should look like

Like a lot of old shounen, far too linear and action oriented, not enough nuance and plot points to properly satisfy, difficult to get hyped about things. No breather at all throughout it's entirety as well. Had it's moments though, characters were a mixed bag, they all had their ups and downs, especially Popp. 6/10.

It was fine. To me the series dragged too long, particularly since episode 80 or so. The ending was solid, though, although slightly open for my taste.

I understand. I don't agree however. I think the storey was well written and thought out. Every character was used, even at the end they don't forget about the very minor fake heroes and they had a role to play.

There were no random power ups, all the power ups were explained and the heroes had to work hard to learn new spells/moves/techniques.

All the people that came back from being "dead" had a reason to come back and they explained how they came back ina way which made sense.

As far as characters being likeable or not, it's a matter of taste but for me personally, no character was so bad that made me hate them. Even among the villains, Zaboera was one of those characters that everyone seemed to hate but that was how it was supposed to be.

I think maybe you are judging this applying standards of the real world and real life we live in. Sure, in our reality, a "villain" or rather a bad person may not stand around and let you talk to your friends, if they want to kill you they might just shoot you and your friends right away. But don't forget this is a fantasy, and we are talking about beings that have powers beyond all human comprehension. They feel they have so much power that no one can stop them so of course they don't care if people talk for a bit or even they will stand and boast about their power because they are so sure of their victory. This happens even in movies, Avengers for example, Thanos was also like that, but that didn't stop most people from liking those movies.

For me this was an improvement from the original anime, not just in the animation but everything else. And the story itself was well written, the characters had a lot of growth and some of them had amazing development unlike in most me modern anime where a lot of the time characters do suffer from lack of development and the writers do give them random power ups that seem to come from nowhere.

And as far as some characters not having an important role, I think you mentioned Crocodine. Well did you forget he saved them more than a couple of times, like when he saved Hyunckel from burning under the lava, when he rescued Dai from Mystvearn and Zaboera, when he buried them all to save them from the Black Core explosion. And he was key in defeating the royal guard because with his move he got the shield off from Sigma. The poor guy did all he could with what power he had. It's just that towards the end, he was probably one of the weakest ones in the group so he couldn't do as much to help. It wouldn't have made sense for him to have had a major role in defeating Vearn.

So again, I hear your point but I don't agree with it all. But it is what it is, some people watch this anime and see what you see, and some people see what I see. I guess it all depends on what standards you apply to it.

I agree completely! Unlike most shonen, Dai actually gives most of the characters justice and keeps all the main party members relevant all the way to the very end. Most shonen just shaft almost everyone long before the end, except for like the main character and maybe one or two other characters.

Like you said, there's so many moments where Dai would've been killed if his friends hadn't helped. Sure, they can't all fight toe to toe on his skill level, but the anime makes a point that even if they can't be the power house that Dai is, they have other roles to play that are equally important in the long run. I did feel Crocodine gets a bit shafted near the end but like you said, it made sense since he couldn't keep up. Honestly makes me wish the Makai/Underworld arc did get written since he was gonna get a bigger role in that from what people were saying, but I still think his arc was complete by the end and done well regardless.

I also do appreciate that all the power ups felt earned/well explained as well, unlike most shonen where there are a lot of asspulls, Dai really didn't have that, it all lined up with the consistent logic that was established in this world from beginning to end. And of course, the character writing was top notch, definitely some of the best I've seen in the genre period (especially the likes of Popp and Hadlar, though my personal favs. are Popp, Dai and Crocodine).

I'm bummed that Dai is very underappreciated (and even misunderstood in terms of what it achieves compared to most other shonen, as tons of people in this thread have shown), but I'm always happy to see the people who can appreciate the amazing top notch writing in it like you good sir. Hats off to you, fellow disciple of Avan!

Edit: Lol, unintentional but I ended up being post 100 for the 100th episode discussion, woo!

Sorry for my late response to this. After the anime ended I kind of stopped keeping up with anything about it. I just wanted to say thanks for reading my comment! I'm glad you are able to appreciate this show as I did. I am now starting to watch both the English and Spanish dub versions. I want to see which of the two is better, to recommend to those who can speak both languages and don't want to watch the subtitled version. The original Japanese version is still the best in my opinion.

Awesome anime. Good animation. Dragon Ball Super staff need to learn how to do it with Dragon quest staff.

My thoughts pretty much summed up here.

Definitely down for a sequel though, this ended a little too open for my liking.

It’s nice to see a trademark series like this getting a remake after all these years though. Given how the industry seems to be picking one after another from such an esteemed list, I wonder what will be next…

That ending felt a bit rushed, but overall I liked the finale and the show in general. I read the manga YEARS ago, so this was nice a nostalgia trip.

*sniff* So it ended for now. Can anybody explain to me just WHY virtually EVERY Main Villain/Endboss in this kind of stories needs to be so overconfident & arrogant only Moments before they get wiped out? Can't end well for them. :-D

Wasn't really surprised at the tiny blue guy appearing once more. ;-)

Minor negative points for the Outcome being somewhat generic and kinda unoriginal/cliché (Supposed heroic Sacrifice à la Son Goku), but other than that, I was quite entertained over the course of the last about-a-year. My Feeling was right to recommend this further in the Secret Santa Event^^.

What a story.. amazing characters with beautiful inspirational writing, something i rarely see in shonens these days.

Dai, Pop, Avan, Hadlar, Baran and Vearn are some of the my favourite characters in the industry.

I waited over 20 years for this anime to come back and it did and surpassed my all expectations. some moments were peak entertainment for me personally.

The ending was rushed in my opinion, and the work had some missteps here and there, but overall, I'll never forget this amazing story.

I hope they make a sequel one.

Absolutely agree with you! I too hope that the sequel against Velzar will eb announced soon! Such a great and amazing series! I like it so much!
makai arc correct ? takes place 5 years after the fight with vearn

2nd likely hood for a movie or series is baran's story leading up to the battle with velzar

Not sure why some people are saying this is an open ending. It was quite clear cut happy ending, Dai beat Vearn and no enemies have survived. Dai going missing at the end was a good way to resolve the whole problem of him being way too powerful and terrifying humans during the time of peace. He did his hero thing and made a graceful exit, unlike his dad who hooked up with the princess and got her killed.

Anyway, was a somewhat slow watch overall. Felt like it was a boss fight after a boss fight non stop, barely any adventure or world development. Hadlar was the best part of the show. His growth was amongst the top out of all the villains I have seen.

@akihikosama People act like it's an open ending because there there is a little bit of a story behind that. The manga was published from 89 to 96, and when it began, it was only supposed to run for 2 years. After the Baran arc, they planned to go into the last arc with MystVearn, Vearn and KillVearn, but since the series had good rating, the authors got the chance to extend their story (it's pretty obvious in the manga there was a change of direction at that time).

Dai continued for years, and when the end got closer, Shueisha proposed them to continue their story further after Vearn defeat (some say they proposed that because they knew their 2 most populars series - Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk - were supposed to end soon, and Shueisha wanted to not lose a third in a short time, even if it was far less popular than the 2 others), thus the authors (they work as a duo, Riku Sanjo writes and Koji Inada draws) began to introduce element that could lead to a continuation. It was clearly stated that the return of Larhalt and the apparition of Velzar were element put there in that could serve as connect to that potential sequel. But in the end, Koji Inada had some health issue and stated that, if there was a continuation, it would be without him, because he could not bear the rhythm of a weekly publication anymore. So they decided to stop it at Vearn's defeat, but leaving open the possibility of a sequel at a later time.

That's why people act like it's an open ending... because it was written so a sequel was possible.

Very little is know about that potential sequel except a few ideas/direction they thought using and shared in interviews. The idea was that it would happen in the underworld/makai, that Dai would act as the new Dragon Knight, and Larhalt, Crocodine and new character would be his dragon Riders. Bad guy would be a third party that took part in Velzar and Vearn bet to conquer the surface world. But none of those element were sit in stone. That's it.

Six years after the end of Dai, the duo began another manga that has nothing to do with Dragon Quest, which basically killed the idea of sequel. That manga got several hiatus (one of them lasting for 10 years due to Koji Inada's health problems) and is still running today, which make the possibility of a sequel to day very unlikely.

With the success of the new anime, some fans got a little wild, hoping for a sequel that would be an anime exclusive and thus would not be too demanding on the author health. Then last years, there was rumors a new Dragon Quest Dai project was in development, and some people here jumped to conclusion (I mean, their source was a non official twitter account that said there was something in the work). If that project exist, it's more likely to be an adaptation of the prequel manga about Avan that's nearing to its end.
