| So-so movie that was mostly saved by its peculiar yet captivating visuals and a solid OST. Would have been better with an extra 20-30 minutes so they could develop the main trio's relationship and give Ayane's mother storyline a proper conclusion, because the conclusion the movie came up with was frankly awful. 5/10 |

| Damn, they really botched the ending. The opening of the suitcase with the sentimental music playing to make the viewer feel good while you know the main character is staring at either a decaying corpse or the bones of a friend just felt liek the wrong choice. Also, the suitcase being buried like half a foot deep was also slightly aggravating. Going to be hard to explain digging it up yourself to the police, but no worries there since they didn't even tell the police, I guess? Instead he just creepily leaves her necklace on the front porch as if that is going to help her mom in any way. If anything, that will give her more hope that she is alive still. Of course, he is now painting pictures of her in his room after all of this. I really hope they informed the police off-screen because dude is definitely going to be the #1 suspect once the mom turns over the necklace and they find those paintings in his room, lol. Aside from that abysmal sequence of events, I did like the movie. I really wish it wasn't tainted by the extremely poor execution of the ending. Like some have stated, maybe it was a time constraint issue, but every issue I had could have been solved by simply having the police show up to present the necklace to the mother. That required zero extra time to show. I didn't really have an issue with anything else. Loved the music, atmosphere, message, and art throughout. The characters were good enough for a short film. Animation was good enough. Not sure how to rate this yet, but feels like it should have been a lot better. |

| Sigh, that was depressing. Was I the only one who kept finding the cast and their design similar to Eva's? Ayane/Asuka, Ryou/Kaworu, Tomoya/Shinji. I am unfamiliar with the creator, but I'd pick this short film over Shinkai's any day. Technically flawless, with decent story and characters, and more than enough emotions, compelling without coming off too forced or sappy. @KingYoshi : yeah more or less my thoughts about the ending lol, maybe I've seen too many police tv dramas. |
