Good buildup chapter.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this flashback didn't really happen at any point in the manga, right?

I just had a look at Chapter 45 (the one this episode ended at) and nothing in it was related to it, but I can't remember if it ever happens in future chapters, been a year since I've read this part and the next arc is probably my least favorite.

I do remember this specific scene it's somewhere beyond this arc I believe but forgot which chapter exactly.

OT: I liked this episode especially how they focused on the relationship Armin, Mikasa and Eren have it was refreshing and heartwarming to see that and especially seeing Hannes being like a father-figure it was a cute moment. Also noticed that they made Hange's breasts bigger than in the manga does this mean they're giving hange a gender in the anime or it wasn't intentional? hmmm. Overall enjoyed it I liked they gave us a calm slow episode after the intense past episodes its like the calm before the storm.

Shit, they're really only adapting one chapter per episode now. They're even adding filler to pad the episode which sucks.

Next episode's preview suggests that they're adapting chapters 46 and 47, which I hope is the case.

Actually the flashback kinda was in the manga, but was just a single panel. It was extended since the producers already know in which manga's point they will stop the anime

Boring episode but I expected that this episode will be based on only one chapter but this was necessary if studio wants end this season good.

My prediction for the next episodes:

i really liked the "most filler episode" as some people are calling. The flashback wasn't totally a filler, the producers extended a single panel in a entire flashback ( thankfully they did it because i wanted see Mikasa beating some bullies for a long time)

People could apreciate a little more these kinda of episodes, they are great to step the pass of the history, the episode gave a slight air of calm after the action. ( which we really needed, actually, probably most part of people who thinks this episode was boring, are probably people who are just interested in the action of this show) and since the anime is supervised by Isayama, and probably he aproved this flashback, i dont think we can really call of filler anymore.

Now focusing on the episode, i really liked how they focused on the EMA's relationship in this episode, it was heartwarming seeing they together on the "old golden days" and then the contrast with the actual reality ( this was pretty sad in some terms ) with Mikasa and Armin feeling they are always left behind by Eren.

it was a good episode, and the next will also be a "calm episode"

Calm before the big storm type of episode, which honestly was for the best. After alot of titan action it feelt really good to just sit back and enjoy the conversation and memories of Mikasa Eren Armin and Hannes. Anime only viewers will probably be displeased but oh well, i enjoyed it alot

Alright episode. Pretty calm, which was nice. I can see why they added the flashback, but it didn't really have to be that long. It was a fun flashback though, it just didn't feel like it added anything significance.

Also, I really dislike the stigma that seems to exist that anime only viewers will not enjoy these types of episodes (as if we're the inferior fans), which might be true for some, but seeing as I'm an anime only viewer as well, I'd have to disagree. I enjoy these types of episodes too, even if there's lots of dialogue.
However, it depends on how the dialogue is delivered. If the dialogue is delivered well and cleverly, then it's all good. If it's not, well, then it's just bad writing, bad directing and poor voice acting, which are perfectly valid reasons to dislike it (though I have not come across that yet so good on them).

This episode regurgitated information besides the scenes with Reiner and bertold at the beginning and end of this episode ,the scouts being able to ride their horses up the wall to transport them to the other side to enter the forest and hannes being an actual character in this show again we learned nothing new.

All I want to say is that, even though I think Mikasa is the least interesting character in the show, my god she looked simply gorgeous in this episode. Liked the extended flashback a lot too.

For the rest, I enjoyed this episode a lot. It's a nice breather before some more shit is gonna go down.

A breather was needed after all the hype and this episode was just that. The flashback was alright and it was nice to see Jean and Pixies after a long while.
Anyways, can't wait to see next episode, especially to see more about Reiner and Berthold's motivations.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

This episode seemed like a whole lotta nothing.
After the wrap-up from last week's cliffhanger, the characters mainly just stood around and talked about events that occurred. I could appreciate it if some characterization went on during the dialogue, but that simply wasn't the case.

They threw in a filler flashback to illustrate the point that Eren is strong, and he won't stop fighting, blah, blah, blah. The thing is, we already know this about Eren from previous episodes, so spending half of the episode illustrating that point through flashbacks and dialogue is absolutely useless.

I think this episode was supposed to be a break for the animators. A dialogue-heavy episode meant to give the animators time to tackle the big showdowns in future episodes. I can understand the need for that, but I wish they would have utilized the downtime in a more constructive way.

The hilarious way in which Mikasa and Armin angrily scarfed their food down was the one good thing about the episode. That's a moment for the books.
This episode is a solid 3/5 for me.
I think it goes without saying, but you're weaboo trash.

Nice episode.
DAMN Reiner & Bertholdt got away with Eren & Ymir.
Mikasa is such a beast. So cool seeing her fight when she was younger.
Sad seeing her & Armin down. Don't worry you'll get him back.
Both of them eating furiously was funny.

Nice little talk from Hannes.
Great to see Erwin, the Survey Corps & Military Police there for support.

Everyone heading to the forest.

@Modernoir

if we see that, I doubt we will see all of the flashback, if anything they will just show the ending part of that, because it wouldn't make sense to animate the same thing again as a flashback when that chapter gets animated in season 4 or whenever.

I think the ending of that flashback will have anime only confuse as hell. lol

Reaaally bad episode but I guess since it's 12 episodes they want to stop at a certain point in the story and you need filler episodes for that. Anyway, this season is vastly inferior to the first unfortunately, poor writing, worse animation... and we waited 4 years for this crap. At least the manga is still good.

Well, episode 29 shared name with chapter 39, "Soldier", yet it covered about half of chapter 40, "Ymir". And episode 28 shares name with chapter 37, "Southwestward", whereas most of what it covers is from chapter 38, "Castle Utgard". So going by name isn't a precise measure. And the preview does hint at some content from chapter 47.

I don't mind flashbacks or fillers.... but this flashback barely says anything new to the characters.
We've seen that episode where Levi let go of Petra's corpse, saying how Levi always has to struggle between being loyal to his own feelings and doing what has to be done through a different setting. This episode, instead, we just saw more Mikasa fighting with other children for Eren, more Hannes being drunk, which were exactly what we had seen before.
The only thing we learned is that Hannes doesn't give a shit when being insulted because he's self-conscious, yet he still fought with the shopkeeper.

I guess it's hard to write anything meaningful with just 5 minutes of screen time after all.

Nice episode! Love the flashback! "Eren is always like that" maybe that's the thing Hannes wants to say to Mikasa and Armin. But Eren will never give up, although he never won too until now. Hannes is like old man for Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, love to see he's taking care and giving advice to Mikasa and Armin. And love to see Jean and Pixis again wkwkwk. Can't wait until the next episode, what will Eren and Ymir do against Reiner and Berthold??

All this was was a quick breather after a very intense battle and by the end they're already chasing after Eren and everyone else. Nobody is calling it a masterpiece. Also don't act like episodes like these aren't common in other shows, especially battle shounen.

I don't mind added filler like this, as long as it doesn't have a bad effect to the story, like altering the real scene, and its fun, not boring, then its fine with me.
