I really wanted to enjoy this as a fan of Monogatari... And I did! These characters have already totally interested me, and I'm really buying the aesthetic. I'm ready to know more!

MASSIVE RANT INCOMING.

The only explanation I can find for why this is rated so highly, is because people will love any anime that has, "artful" looking.
If the goal of Niseoin was to create the ultimate "up its own ass" anime, then this anime is already a masterpiece.

1) The writing
2) Dialogue
3) Directing
4) The overall attitude

The writing:
Literally, exposition the anime. We've all complained about anime that start off with massive exposition, most recently Fate/Apocrypha, but at least they also had plot progression; a conflict; a goal; scenes actually doing something plot-wise.
This episode has literally nothing but exposition. There is 0 characterization ever shown. Everything is just told to you.

The Dialogue. Hooolllyyy ssshhhiiiit. Oh man, where do I begin. To explain the problem with the dialogue, I'm gonna have to break it down to 3 basic reasons.

1) Character assumptions:
Much of the dialogue consists of characters telling another character that they are wrong, or are stupid, of some sort.
The problem is they have literally no basis, on assuming what another character assumes. They just guess what another character thinks without any basic evidence.

2) Monologues:
It's clear that these characters barely know each other.
So then why do they go into such specific detail about themselves?
Why do they talk like they've known each other for years?

3) Lack of transition:
Characters start bringing up completely random topics out of left field, for no reason.
Example: Blondie starts ranting about how artists who finish their art in a few months when they could've done it in a week, are idiots.
Okay, that's fine. The problem is:
Where the hell did any of this come from?
In actual conversations, people change the topic by mentioning another topic in one conversation. Once that conversation is over, they change the topic to something that was mentioned in the 1st conversation.

The directing:
Seriously. Nothing about the directing makes sense.
What's the point of the panning shots when a character just walks?
Why do the backgrounds look so...weird?
None of these avante garde directing tricks exist to tell a story.
In Bakemonogatari, many times, a character's thoughts would be expressed in on-screen text in a flash (because when people think in their heads, they think very fast), and would be a different color (to reflect the mood of the character).
Zaregoto? Nothing serves any purpose. There's no reason for any of its strange directing.

The overall attitude:
This is personnel, but I don't care. The MC's monotone bland face, the characters' constant smirks, all reek of pretentiousness, like the anime's deliberately saying to the audience, "Ha ha, look how smart and cool I am!"

NOTE: I do not hate avante garde anime.
Angel's Egg and Texhnolylze I greatly admire, and those are some of the most out-there anime.
But neither of them preach to the audience, have completely unnatural and forced dialogue, or a pretentious attitude, like Zaregoto.

Lol, cry more dude.

If you paid attention even a little to my original post, nothing about it is nonsensical.
Did you ever take writing class of any sort?

This was odd and quite hard to get into.
Visually this was very heavy. Directing wasn't very pleasant either.
Kalafina was amazing as always tho.

Rewatched the first ep. And I completely disagree with myself. How odd.
Except for Kalafina, they're great no matter what.

Dem legs. Dat oppai.
Dat Kalafina.
Dat Maid oppai.
She cute.
You gotta do all those excerises?
Oh, she got that I wanna fuck face behind those flowers.
A girl is sleeping.
Her name is Rei.
Dat booty. Dat pussy...cat. Hello, Maki.
Hello, Akane.
Dem Akane legs. LAWD!
Oh snap! She's got a board in her room.
WTF! Don't decline Akane. Cancel your prior appointment with Kanami.
Dat head tilt.
She just drank form your cup. Do you not see the signs? Go after her.
WTF! Maki was standing there this whole time?
lol at Maki saying creepy after he said it.
Kanami got oppai.
Kanami head tilt.
Kanami side oppai.
Dat watch.

Good start. Kalafina with another amazing song. All dem SHAFT head tilt's. I was wondering why this was reminding me of Danganronpa then I remembered that Kodaka was inspired by Nisioisin's works. lol This is just the first episode and Akane is already waifu. All dem leg shots. So perfect. Rei and Kanami are my next waifu candidates.
If you see that my post is exactly 1 month old (or more) from when it was posted... Don't waste your time, especially when you want to reply with something petty & insignificant. Assume that I've moved on (because I have).

As a huge fan of the monogatari series, this is a nice new show to binge while I'm inbetween seasons of the g.o.a.t series

Oh wow it's like Monogatari without being Monogatari, yet still full of whimsical lines and incredibly attractive females!

Long time since I last fell asleep during the very first episode (literally). Those random shots and cuts are over-dramatic and annoying. Too much unnecessary dialog to keep up with.

Always the same… Every age, every generation.

Other than noticing it's Shaft
I didn't expect Shaft but I guess it's a plus with this kind of style xD

Also Yuuki Aoi being Yuuki Aoi xD
Along with Kaji Yuki they're just a really good pair!

I don't intend on understanding the whole episode, but if I do, this episode really was confusing. Just got some introduction about the characters in the mansion and what their profession is, the story hasn't progress for this episode based on the synopsis of the anime. Well, nothing interesting about the story as of now, but the characters interests me.

Wow this show is intensely NisiOisiN, huh. Its more Monogatari than Monogatari. Which, like, Im more than up for, especially with no more Monogatari adaptations having been announced yet.

I kinda love Akane's outfit so much that it makes me wish I was a cute girl so I could wear something like that. Why cant great clothes exist for fat guys :(

Rewatching the Kubikiri Cycle anime now, and I have to say, it was an average premiere as a whole as an adaptation, and ultimately I had mixed feelings for this episode as a whole.

Firstly, I'll talk about what I thought was underwhelming. The first point I have to address is the artstyle and animation used in this episode. I wish they went for Take's style with some of that SHAFT-like influence rather than using the same character designer as the Monogatari series since I feel like the designs being Monogatari'd looks a bit odd, especially people like Maki and Kanami to me. It just doesn't feel right looking at them compared to how they normally look, the VOFAN designs fit the Monogatari anime, but Take's designs being Monogatari'd doesn't work as smoothly. Not to mention that since its an OVA series, the animation and directing felt a bit on the cheaper side too with less creative frames, more stills and the CG sticking out like a sore thumb. It's not necessarily something that bothers me as much as the artstyle not being Take's like how the Katanagatari anime was, but I've seen so many Monogatari editions be animated before 2016/17 and they all look a lot better drawn and animated than this one. Kubikiri Cycle is the first ever NISIOISIN novel yet given the style and presentation, it feels like a B-tec version of the Monogatari series as a whole here.

The pacing also felt off for me and while the staff did their best to increase the pace a tad by cutting some of the dialogue that some characters had with each other like with Boku and Tomo having a lot more dialogue than was showcased in the anime, that was some of the highlights for me in the first book. Yeah NISIOISIN's writing and pacing in the book itself was clunky and rough around the edges, but the anime's way of portraying the conversations and visualizing felt underwhelming too to watch. It lost a bit of the charm while still feeling sluggish at the same time somehow.

At least the positives I would say have been the characters so far and their introductions. Nowhere as interesting as how I found the Monogatari characters when I first met them but the introduction here is good, I in particular liked the opening conversation with Boku and Aikawa and his conversation with Akane Sonoyama too. It hasn't progressed far enough to get to the meat of the story since there is a TON of writing in the actual book itself but the show did a decent enough job in laying down the foundation of its content.

Plus having Yuki Kajiura do the music is quite the interesting choice. Never expected her to work on a SHAFT anime but given the more locked-room style of mystery with this show with some intense scenes bound to happen at times, it could work. The show doesn't rely on her music as much as her other shows she has worked on since there is a ton of dialogue that's the main focus, but should serve well in the backdrop for other scenes, and a couple tracks I've heard from her sounded nice here.
