Well it's quite obvious now that the current lead admin Kineta doesn't like animes produced by non-asian countries. S/He also hates long running animes so their ratings get freezed.
Since Ninja Kamui is a anime produced by by Warner bros and Adult Swim, I don't think it's gonna get approved easily..

They will not as MAL is ass when it comes to show made outside japan or just made for western audience in general. Look at scott pilgrim.
2023 might be the year where I will be happy. This year is not happy year.

Cool, glad I'm not the only one wondering why this hadn't appeared in the app yet.

Hopefully they get things sorted out in the next couple weeks, but I could easily see them saying it's not "real" anime for the reasons mentioned above.

So there's no reason for MAL to not add this title at this point, because other Warner-affiliated original anime, particularly ones that never received a TV run or release in Japan, are already in the database, such as Housing Complex C and Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

Also, the show will be having its subbed airing within the same night on TV, so if it's the lack of an original, Japanese audio track holding things up, that's a moot point now.

And in terms of production, it's being directed by the Sunghoo Park of Jujutsu Kaisen fame, at his production company E&H Production, which has several listings in the database, so I'm really not understanding any of the logic here by not adding it....

The gatekeeping is out of control. It's being animated by an established Japanese animation studio and the director has previious experience directing other anime. It's an anime.

Fr but I feel like ninja kamui is definitely gonna be approved it’s fucking peak bro . But the real issue is that mal don’t include American animation like for example The Legend of Vox Machina , blood of Zeus and arcane .I can go one there so much with this animation style that mal ignores or sum .

@smokinhaze It'll probably be approved. Although, I can't see anything mention it getting a JP release. Just Adult Swim's Toonami & HBO's Max, which are both based in the US. So I'm beginning to have doubts. If it's just the animation and that's it, it might fall under "cartoon" much like how various Korean animation would.

It's understandable that those aren't here, they shouldn't be. Realistically, it should only be Japanese Animation here, since it is called MyAnimeList but unfortunately, they also include various other Eastern Animations.

Here's how to refer to Anime & Anime-style animations, instead of calling everything anime;

  • Anime refers to Japanese Animation.
  • Cartoon refers to Western Animation.
  • Dessin Animé refers to French Animation
  • Hanguk Aeni refers to Korean Animation.
  • Donghua refers to Chinese Animation.

@susgnome As I mentioned above, there are already Toonami originals that have not aired or been released in Japan, in any capacity, that are already in the database (Housing Complex C and Blade Runner: Black Lotus). There's already precedence, there shouldn't be any more debate about it.

Came here because I forgot to add the show to my watching list. Was very surprised when I couldn't.

The only reason I wasn't more surprised is because of what happened to Scott Pilgrim, unfortunately, so half-expected this to happen. That's not a good thing.

I don't feel like Ninja Kamui belongs to MAL. But just like Scott Pilgrim, being excluded from MAL doesn't mean it's not good. And people can always discuss in general forum of MAL or reddit or any social network.

@phantomfandom Why doesn't it? It's done by a JP studio. It is definitively anime regardless of region of distribution.

@Lucifrost now take a wild guess how long it's been "pending approval"...
Spoiler: much, much longer than just few days.

(And I personally know a lot of manga series that are permanently stuck in "pending approval" limbo or were deleted years later (example: Bibliomania), so something having this status doesn't necessarily mean it will get approved later)

well, it just got approved, so there's that. Methinks mods just wanted to be 100% sure with this show being anime.
Summertime days, passing gently
Sunlight, leading to an encounter;
Dreams that don't want to end
Continue onwards toward the next day
While she waits in the air.

I was also wondering why it isn’t getting added to the database. However, finally it is!
In case of the debate whether it’s an anime or not, obviously it’s an anime.

1. Sunghoo Park is a Japanese anime director (even tho he is Korean) as he has done JJK 0, JJK S1, Monsters etc.

2. Ninja Kamui has Japanese voice casting as every anime should have

3. Almost all of the production members are Japanese except some of them being non Japanese/Asian. Mind you this also happened to Cyberpunk Edgerunners and there were also non Asian people involved but eventually it was a product of Studio Trigger and managed to win the anime of the year award. Here, Ninja Kamui is a product of E&H which is owned by Subghoo Park himself.

4. Even the theme song performing band (Coldrain) is Japanese, it’s just they make songs in English and nowadays many anime choose English songs as OPs EDs.

What should not be considered as anime are Arcane, Blue Eye Samurai, Vox Machina, Castlevania etc as those are not originally from Japan. Those are in general animated series, not “ANIME”.
