Gun gale was by far the worst season of sao, why are they making an alternative story to that, i want to see sword art online (you know, with swords not guns)

I don't know anything about the manga (if sao even has one) but why is there no more new content added to the series, and why are they wasting money on these pseudo series that just drag down sao as a whole

Personally, I really hate SAO, but found GGO like bullshit fun compared to the first season, and this alternative to just expand on that game so the audience can enjoy both worlds if they want. I also personally enjoy the GGO spin off more than any of SAO, not only because I just liked the characters more and story but because the world is cooler within the GGO game imo and I like guns more than swords lmao. It’s really a matter of preference just like anything else but they are expanding on the spin off for people who like all of SAO and anything that stems from it, or for people like me who for some reason like the bullshit fun more than the seasons that try to be something and fail. (Not saying you can’t like it btw I’m just expressing that I don’t like it)

GGO isn't SAO silly, it doesn't have characters with negative IQ that adapt any personality they want on the spot, it doesn't have frequent h-scenes that do nothing but distract audience from its garbage narrative, it doesn't have the worst protagonist of all time even by isekai standards, it's not written by reki kawahara aka the dude that wrote SAO (that's an insult btw), it doesn't have the meaningless 'you die in game you die in real life by microwaves or whatever'.
but i tell you what it is, it's a straight up upgrade from SAO, it's written by keiichi sigsawa aka the dude that wrote kino's journey (that means he's both an og and a good writer), the characters while make consistent decisions when thy need to and also make irrational decisions when pushed too far (i believe thats what people call good character writing), theres an actual story being told instead of teenage jesus go brrrrrr, the protag isn't some know it all do it all rizz god because of 'self insert', shes believable (even though i dont relate to her as all, thats double good!), the game itself (GGO) make a hell of a lot more sense than SAO.
want me to count more reasons why ggo is objectively superior to sao?

look, im not a fan of ggo either, but sao is easily one of the most overrated anime of all time (even now that most people know how garbage it is) i can remember multiple instances that would instantly wipe any other series off the planet and yet sao got away with cuz it came out in 2012, when calling out its bad writing didn't do much, anime wasn't mainstream back then, people didn't care too much. but now that everyone knows of its shortcomings, i expect people not to have asinine takes like this.

Nah bro. GGO was the good part of sao season 2

The fairy bullshit was the bad part obviously.

You answered your own question. It's shit and needs an alternative. Also Alternative GGO is not from the same author and it really shows.

The absolute worst part, was the Fairy Arc (2nd part of season 1) ,

tbh I personally enjoyed GGO Arc.
And imo the SAO alternative Season was enjoyable too
I'm not hyped for the new season but I will definitely watch it

ok I started a war against me here. So as I said about the manga, I don't know who wrote Sao or ggo either. I thought it was the same person.

And I don't think Sao is some god level anime but I like it for the SWORDS not guns, so I am biased here but it is my preference.

I watched it long time ago so if you check my list it might have a high score idk what I gave it. It is mid. (and I won't watch it again)

So know that I know it is not related to Sao I still won't watch it lol cuz I don't like the guns. Not saying it's trahs even though that's what I said earlier

Alternative is a modern take on SAO's themes, similar to progressive and unital ring. We're not getting a TV-series adapting the next novels until the arc is completed. We have one original movie and this, it's all exciting.

I’m very late but just found out about a potential season 2. Pretty new anime fan based of my list and I have some controversial opinions. I think that the GGO arc was kind of pointless, but that didn’t really matter. It had some good moments and interested me more than swords. The alternative was also pretty good. I don’t think it was better than the original GGO and have no idea why it’s getting a season two, but they had some pretty good character motives, and some insanely well made action scenes. Does it need a season 2? No. But will it still be good? Almost certainly.

@sakasakiyaoi Because it's basically the first arc repeated and mixed with a very poorly plagiarized Berserk.

Honestly, GGO is better than the SAO main story. I love the battle royale story more than the cliché harem story. In fact, GGO is the only thing that I recommend to my friends because of how good it is.

Indeed GGO arc is not the best one, however, in my opinion this spin-off is refreshing. It introduces new characters and of course different storyline, but in the same world of SAO (VR games), which doesn’t leave aside the original storyline, which is the mortal game. Also, it shows the consequences in real life of SAO, during and before, of people that were not survivors.

@Mike1nator

It sounds like you might be a bit confused? This isn't an alternative version of the first season of GGO or anything like that. It's just a continuation of the story. If you look back at the MAL page for S1, it also has "SAO Alternative" in the title as well. So the alternative is misleading. It just means it's an alternate storyline to SAO using the same world as the backdrop.

And yes, GGO is a LN just like SAO. The first season of GGO covered Vol 1 - 3, which was the "2nd Squad Jam" arc. This one will likely cover Vol 4 - 6, which is the 3rd Squad Jam/Betrayers arc.

Very light spoilers for the arc/why it's called "betrayer"

As for source material, there are currently 13 LN volumes out, so they have a lot of room for adaptation if they want, but I can see why there are longer breaks too. The LN basically follows the same format over and over: Squad Jam + brief side quest/event. Vol 13 was the end of the 5th Squad Jam. There's no announced released date for the next volume, and the releases have been slowing down a lot, so it makes me think they either are just going to end it here or wrap things up in one more vol.

@Comander-07

Unless it's an original story or extremely popular, most source material doesn't get a complete anime adaptation. The anime serves more as an advertising gimmick for the source material (manga, LN, WN, etc.) and to popularize merch and figurines. I know I'm like you and would like to see more of the side characters fleshed out. But it's GGO that has a huge amount of source material and is popular with figurines, so of course they are going to go for that.

@killbethy Im just surprised that while they fumble the progressive movies they also push out this. Is this actually popupar in japan? Because to me it seems like nobody would watch this if not for the SAO setting

Surprisingly yes. GGO's light novel sales surpassed 1 million copies all the way back in 2018 after only 3 years of publication. Most of its early volumes landed in the yearly best seller list within the top 10 as did the GGO franchise as a whole. (To put it in perspective, its early volumes outsold other popular LNs released around the same time like KonoSuba, A Certain Magical Index, DanMachi, Assassination Classroom, etc). Its hype definitely declined pretty quickly though, especially when SAO started getting less attention as a whole too, which is probably why the series has been on hold and they are releasing another anime adaptation. Sales for LN series and their merch (figurines, Blu-ray's, and just merch in general tend to be the biggest moneymakers in Japan, and SAO was always hindered in the beginning with Asuna really being the only popular merch character... another reason GGO probably came into existence along with the popularity of the whole girls with guns genre). It's still sold somewhere around 2 million copies at this point, which is a lot by LN standards considering only 40 or so franchises have ever moved more than 5 million... EVER, and most of those have way more total volumes.

Consumption in Japan is just different than it is internationally. More people read Lens and manga than watch anime, buy and play the related video games, most of which never get translated internationally; people buy and paint expensive figurines, or even the FMC's gun P-chan replica was a very popular purchase. On the other hand, more people skip anime adaptations or only watch a few episodes. The majority of seasonal anime isn't really that watched, and only a few franchises ever get popular enough to appeal to the general public and not just otaku. Now the industry is in a bit of a funk because more and more authors are publishing their stories as web novels and don't want to be stuck to harsh deadlines and editors micromanaging their creative control over series.. so you generally get web novels that authors only sell the rights to for publication after they are far enough along that they can finish on their own terms, and then editors and begrudging authors make some changes for the LNs so they will still sell. Still, sales have dropped dramatically. A single SAO volume used to sell more than the top 5 - 10 franchises each 6 months combined. This is also why we are getting more and more short adaptations that never have a chance in hell of being fully adapted along with original series, since they tend to be aimed more at the general public (as are the few franchises that do receive full adaptations like TenSura, Cote, JJK, KnY... shows that basically have a big budget from the beginning).

@killbethy wow Im surprised its that damn popular. Is the LN different from the anime then? I mean vastly better?

I just struggle to see why this specifically sells so well. I guess SAO just pushes it up massively. I can see Asuna beeing the main heroine but there is stoll Sinon and Alice. Meanwhile I dont even remember the names of the characters from GGO

In some ways it's a totally different story. The characters and motivations are better fleshed out, always representative of who they are in real life and more focus on their struggles as people. Its action scenes primarily serve as a way to develop the characters in a unique way and show how common interests bring people together. The outcome of the battles are secondary to how they help the MC overcome her insecurities and the secondary MC battle her mental trauma and struggles with fame. The game is more a means of bringing two very different, isolated people together and making them better for it. The anime really leaned in hard to the fighting and action scenes, which I'm not surprised with. It's a hell of a lot easier to get people to watch than adapt real life struggles, and series like that rarely get adapted unless producers and studios are pretty sure it will receive a full adaptation from the start. Plus the main purpose is usually the advertisement and brainless fun gets a bigger audience, unfortunately. Also, since a lot of people in Japan read the LNs of a series before the anime, which is mostly reversed internationally, they already know the characters and it's the action scenes they want to see animated most.

@killbethy Yeah kinda funny how anime is more popular in the west than in japan, relative to manga and LNs.

So it essentially has the same issue as real SAO: They cut character developement and inner monologue for more easy to follow action

It was a surprise to see Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II production by A1 despite season 1 was produced by someone else.
I guess this is what happened when their masterpiece SAO is running out of cannon source. when they don't have any more SAO project abviously they have to go with the Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. no surprise there.

I think I've watched the vast majority of the currently-extant SAO stuff, and though its been a while I remember SAOA:GGO being pretty okay. Not great, but I certainly enjoyed it more than mainline SAO.

The entire reason I've watched as much SAO stuff as I have despite quite consistently disliking it is because I feel like it has at least an interesting enough setup that could be built upon in interesting ways. I always hold on hope that there WILL be something interesting done with it (Alicization did some kind of interesting things despite overall being off-the-wall insane and not in a good way, as an example). SAOA stuff being written by someone other than Kawahara Reki gives me extra hope that it could be better (and SAOA:GGO definitely was!)

Oo, I can totally see this as a nice anime to watch as siblings. And yeah, I also liked it a lot more. It embraced the fun side of the games and they made our little pink devil a really likeable character with some sweet character growth.

@HigherLvLThinker Ragebait is crazy, the fact that these 4 shows are even mentioned in the same sentence is enough to let everyone know that you're a lost cause. If you can't recognise that at the VERY LEAST, MHA and AOT are constructed incomparably more competently than SAO and Fairy Tail, there's no possible growth you could have to fix your lack of insight.
