Most people think this will lead into the announcement of a season 2 as the content is relevant to upcoming arc(s). If there is no announcement soon after this releases, then it really is a lost cause

This OVA covers the arc where Emilia met Puck. The events here foreshadow events in the later arcs of the novel that the anime didn't cover. So this can lay the foundation for a s2 if/when it is announced.

This bodes well for a season 2. The series seems to be very popular in Japan.

Well considering the revenue it got from tons of official figma releases, I'd wager Season 2 is on it's way. Maybe Fall 2019 or Summer 2020 so it can coincide with the Olympics.

Well, the season 1 wasn't that bad. For me it was starting to become weaker in terms of plot when the shitty romance between Rem, Subaru en Emilia started.

That being said, Season 1 is not horrible, it's good, but for my tastes it lacks work in some points.

I couldn't care less about any prequels, I want a season two lol.

I suppose I will watch it if it is relevant to future arcs like some have pointed out here, but I'm way more hyped for a potential season two than I am for a prequel OVA.

Good for ya EMT lovers out there, this one's for you. And if its about Emilia's past then no subaru too, probably.
And yeah, the story of Emilia's past happens much later in the huge arse Arc 4, whereas the anime ended it in Arc 3.
Chances of S2 are increasing!

This OVA will make us understand Season 2 better. And is a story related OVA with the anime, Season 2 is indeed will coming probaly after this OVA they will annouce it or when pre-screening event just like this OVA. As a WN reader i can say Season 2 will be better than Season 1.

It really better happen. They seriously can't just keep doing stuff like this. In either event though, these OVAs really should be on the second Blu-ray set to come out in the West, as it's taking them long enough already to release it and still waiting.

Didn't season 1 end nicely? I know all parts of the story was not told, but even if it was temporary, Subaru made it back in time to save Emilia...and dadadadada they lived happily ever after, why go through this again? I mean an OVA of them sharing their time together or a side story of small detail events from Season 1 would be good satisfying.

Why even read the LN? lol. If it's cuz u liked the anime, ur retreading the same shit. How could it be bad?

If you bought the LN cuz u knew Re:Zero was popular and wanted it to try it out, what did you seriously expect from an Isekai?

I bought it for real cheap from one of my relative last year lol. I don't watch Anime, unless it's something good for my taste, or if I liked the Original Source then I might watch it.

The case of Re:Zero is basically the same to what happened to Attack on Titan, the anime caught with the source material. Attack on Titan had a 4 year gap between its first and second seasons.

Re:Zero anime covered 9 light novel volumes. Currently, There are 17 volumes in the main series but you would normally want to wait till there are atleast 20 volumes to give you some leeway when adapting.

There are a lot of spinoff light novels that can be used as Ovas if the studio wants to.

or they can finish adapting at the end of an arc with a few Spinoff episodes in the middle (like Log Horizon S2).

Yes, it did end nicely. However his whole purpose of being summoned into the fantasy world by Satella has not been addressed. His own past has not been revealed when you consider that he has never thought of his home/parents after he got involved with the Mansion and so on.

The web novels are starting to address this but it's not completely translated either. LNs are licensed and the english translated LN have just reached volume 9 (which is where the anime ended).

after reading the web novel i can tell the next arc (Arc 4) after the anime finishes is a really really long arc and i don't think they can fit it in 25-26 episodes as the writer likes to make its adoption as close as they could to Novel. So if they wanna complete the next arc in next season i guess they need more budget and that's why they taking more time and launching these OVA's to make fans interested and earn some money.

Having read the initial parts of Arc 4 and considering that it is the rough draft of the story, I guess we should expect the LN version (which the anime is probably adapting) to have the events in a more condensed version, as it did with the previous arcs.

That should get the events portrayed well within 25 episodes in the potential season 2, I feel. I must admit that I find comparing the pacing in the anime versus the light novel/web novel to be difficult since there is no time constraint while reading the material. Nevertheless, if they can replicate the same degree of pacing between events as it was in Season 1 for Season 2, that's a real good accomplishment. (I binged through the series overnight when I watched it for the first time, ..what's next, what's next, etc etc, lol)

edit : Just checked, Arc 4 was condensed into 5 volumes from v10 - v15 while Arc 5 is ongoing from v16. I have never owned an LN so I don't know how long they generally are. Season 1 boxed 9 volumes into it. So I guess 15-18 episodes should be enough for that arc perhaps. I am just throwing numbers up in the air based on how season 1 went, take it with a grain of sea salt.

If I had to guess the number of episodes for season 2 of Re:Zero it be 14 episodes as I am looking at Re:Zero like with the Attack on Titan situation as we wait 4+ years for a second season and ends up with only a few number of episodes that's how I see it. Also the anime is adapting from the light novels as it always had.
