Well that was obvious who the character was under the mask.
Decent episode though. I like how Alisha took on a leadership-like role again for the group to show what she's capable of. Plus, I think the episode did a decent job at portraying Lilah's role as well up to this point. The town seems to be still recovering from the Hellion attacks..
Sorey becoming more well known for his Shepherd status doesn't surprise me. I think the idea of purifying humans is something he'll have to get used to.
Great episode, Even if it was mostly just build up it was nice.
Sorey learning what it truly means to purify malevolence, The way each hit to purify the hellion showed the memories of hate must be really hard to take in and no one except Sorey can bear witness to those acts. As Edna says The Life of Shepard is lonely.
The graveyard scene was stunning, Those visuals along with the sunset was poignantly beautiful. The scene with him stabbing the sword into the ground was great as well.
Alisha's part was easily the best of the episode, Her conviction to stop the war and bring peace is truly something to marvel at. The way she stared into Rose eye's with that determined and unyielding look was just plain awesome. Her minor fight sequence was excellent as well. I loved her bold declaration saying "I will stop the war" while holding that dagger to her neck.
Nice to see Rose and Alisha joining forces at the end.
Really loving the changes right now. Especially with the relationship between Alisha and Rose. I guess we'll get to see them bond much more unlike in the game and gets closer to what we see in the ED.
The anime definitely did so much better than the game at explaining what it really means to be a shepherd. All the burden and malevolence going into you instead.
Who's the assassin? so obvious from the start lololol, but i wonder when did alisha realised that it was Rose? (the ost during this scene, soooo goooood)
Also, when alisha was thanking the seraph in the library, the cups that they were drinking the soup from should have been shown floating. HAHAHA.
The build-up episode mostly so obv nothing crazy, but the part with Alisha-Rose face to face was great, Alisha was such a badass this time. I thought that Rose's reply would be: "You passed the test so now how can i let you die"(something like that), well there's no way that Alisha will die =/
Again the skit was pretty good.
Rose's identity wasn't supposed to be "not obvious" for the viewers since they intentionally showed us her face as an assassin in the prologue ...
Edit : great episode. And I'm liking the approach they've taken for Alisha and Rose's relationship along with the other changes.
Alisha didn't go to the battlefield in the 1st battle, instead she was used as means by higher ups to force sorey to join hyland's ranks and use the shepherds powers against Rolance
Also can't wait how they'll animate what happens in glaivend basin.
I think I'm the only one who disliked the episode. I'm fed up to see how they want to emphasize Alisha's role. They're trying to show that she's badass but everything about her seem so false, they're overdoing about her. She's probably one of the most annoying character I've ever seen. Without her the anime would be better.
So disappointed, they should have follow the story of the game or simply done a Berseria anime (which story is more interesting and does not have character like Alisha).
Things are much more interesting now that they've bothered to explain what it truly means to be a Shepherd. The confrontation between Alisha and Rose also seemed interesting, but I'm still not at all convinced by Alisha's ideals; I understand WHY, but I can just see it leading to lots and lots of people getting killed for little to no reason.
Uh oh, we are getting close towards the parts where story starts making completely no sense and mary sue Rose pretty much takes over the whole show.
Berseria hijack can't come soon enough :/
Nothing else to say about the episode. The show continues to trudge along in the same mediocre level of directing and barely ever goes past above average. The characters are still meh, the MC is still the same insufferable chaste hero boy with the same kitschy power up form and the plot still goes along what happens in the game, albeit with changes made that makes it a bit less tupid. The main interest for me now is pretty much what and how Ufo plans to change and how and if they will fix the mess that is the rest of the game. Preferably by replacing the rest of plot with Berseria stuff and justifying those random tie-in episodes.

the game is utter dogshit, they have to deviate as much as possible to make it watchable, especially in the 2nd cour. the story went apeshit after rose joined.

Hey guys check my profile for current airing season anime recommendation (guaranteed best taste)
I like this episode. That graveyard scene was truly beautiful. And Rose vs Alisha... really nice scene. I am looking forward to the next episode. But sadly just 2 more episodes and then waiting for some time for next episodes *sigh*
I don´t know how much difference is between game and anime, but I hope we will not lose Alisha as I hear it happen in the game.
Alisha was surprisingly cool this episode. I thought she would be just a plot device, but it seems I was wrong, and that makes me happy.
Respecting the reveal of Rose, I thought it was clear she was the masked assassin since the beginning. Nothing surprising here.
Overall just a build up episode. The last two ones looks like they will be really epic.
A great episode, I particularly enjoyed quite the scene at the cemetery, Sorey is experiencing a great development as protagonist, especially mentally, I also enjoyed seeing the relationship between the characters, Mikleo and Edna discussing all the time was hilarious, the episode seemed an preparation for war what's to come, but still developing the plot and the characters, I'm looking forward to the next episodes ..
The anime clearly changed the dynamics between Alisha and Rose. In the game they don't officially meet till way later and Rose is always acting pretty 'fake' with her.
I guess next episode Sorey will learn his first Mystic Arte and we will get to meet the charming mr. Kittybeard.
Unless they decide to merge all events that ever happen in Glaivend into one and skip like 50% of the mid game ... which honestly, won't be a big loss ...
Without some sort of major skip, I can't see them adapting the rest of the story and the epilogue of Zest/Bear tales as a whole in 12 episodes.
amazing animation and sound directing can't compensate for very average story. It's pretty all over the place at time's and lack flow, jumping from one event to the next. Whilst still enjoyable there are RPG's out there with much better storylines.

I agree with you actually. Not that I dislike Alisha or anything and I like her determination and all that but that whole scene felt corny as hell. And it just felt weird to me that she suddenly figured out Rose's identity. It was poorly handled.
The problem with the game was that Alisha had a lesser role compared to Rose, but that was more because the latter was written to be mary sue-ish(I still liked her though). So now the anime wants to emphasize Alisha's role more and how do they do that? By making Alisha a (somewhat)mary sue as well so she can match up to Rose. I don't mind the outcome at all but the presentation is almost cringeworthy.
Now I know about the story of both of the games (Zestiria and Berseria), I can say that this anime is a complete mess. They could have done something great by doing a cross-over between Zestiria and Berseria, but this first half looks more like a "Tales of Alisha", because of stupid Japanese fans that wanted her to be the heroine.
I know there were some misunderstanding about Alisha's role since many thought that she was the main heroine as she appeared on the first artworks but I don't see the problem about her coming at first at the game, make Sorey wanting to go outside, and then not tagging along with him. But know, because of people who complained about that, we got an anime that in 10 episodes did nothing more than emphasizing Alisha's role, making her "badass".
Instead, we could had an amazing anime that makes the link between Zestiria and Berseria, since the two games are set in the same world (but Berseria's story taking place 1000 years before Zestiria).
For those who want to know :
- Maotelus in Zestiria is actually Laphicet in Berseria. At the end of Berseria, he become a white dragon that can "purify" the world. But in Zestiria, he becomes "corrupted" by Heldalf and that's why there is so much malevolence. At the end of Zestiria, after Sorey beats Heldalf, he stays with Maotelus.
- The Five Lords mentioned in Zestiria : At the end of Berseria, Oscar, Teresa, Shigure, and Melchior are reincarnated after their deaths, become four of these lords, the fifth one being Laphicet as Maotelus.
- Magilou and Melchior from Berseria are Mayvin (those who apparently write about the Story in Zestiria)
- Oscar in Berseria (for example) can armatize like Sorey and Rose in Zestiria.
- Since Eizen is a main protagonist in Berseria, and Zaveid appears in both of the games, there are opportunities to link the two series, and emphasize their role.
- Velvet in Berseria is the Lord of Calamity and Artorius is a Shepherd, while in Zestiria Sorey becomes a Shepherd to fight against the Lord of Calamity (Heldalf, who became like this because of the one who was the Shepherd before Sorey : Michael).
Those who want to read it or those who know the story of both of the games, what's your opinion ? I can't help to think that the anime is wasting the potential of the cross-over that could have been done... Especially because of the slow pacing of the show, and the fact that Alisha's role is becoming too important because of stupid fans.
I've read that the anime was made to celebrate the 20 years of the Tales of series, then to promote Zestiria and Berseria games (apparently only Berseria at first since it was the new one but then also Zestiria to boost it sales since people were complaining). I'm not really sure about these points, but this anime looks more like an anime for Alisha's fans. That's why I'm really disappointed. Despite some flaws in the story, the game of Zestiria is better than the anime according to me. (I'm not talking about the Alisha DLC which is crap and more like a "for her fans Alisha will be more developped and Rose would appear like a bad girl"...)

You don't stop malevolence just by fighting hellions, you do it by helping people. And that's why this adaptation gives more relevance to Alisha. She's the character who wants to help people the most. The game fucked up by sidelining Alisha and giving more relevance to Rose because she made the whole cast less empathic, which ended up giving a totally wrong message at the end.
Ufo is fixing the story at its core. Zestiria's themes as depicted in the game didn't make sense so there gotta be some shift on focus. As a result, some characters get more attention than they originally did.
This is all good though. We'll get a better story at the end, more emotionally involved than the original could ever be. Less cynical too.
Damn, Marlind looks way different in the anime! Not at all like a small little village.
jovee said: Also, when alisha was thanking the seraph in the library, the cups that they were drinking the soup from should have been shown floating. HAHAHA.
Maybe. In the games they said that seraphs can take items made by humans and use them, so those items probably also become "invisible" to humans at that point. Of course, the same doesn't apply to living things, as they referenced Mikleo trying to nonchalantly drag an unconscious Sorey back to the inn without it looking like the Shepherd was floating.
Who knows what will happen next. Maybe Ufotable will actually kill Asliah...! When I read the tittle of this episode last week, I thought that Alisha was going to journey with Sorey.

Yeah was some death flags in that episode.
Guessing she is betrayed by Maltran next episode
That would actually shock me, even if I played the game.
Beside, it's going to make the Alisha backlash even more... gigantic. I would love it (I don't actually want her to die since I like her character) because it would show that this is clearly 100% anime original. It would make me watch far more entertaining because I won't be able to (accurately) tell what's going to happen next.

So you're salty and complaining about alisha getting more screentime. Do you think that's better than the salty "stupid" (calls others stupid just cause of different opinions on a char Lol) ones who were disappointed by her lack of screentime and leaving early in game?
Oh look, the worst character in the game makes her true introduction. I wish Rose got written off the show as a change from the game, it would really make the story better. She's annoying, whiney, and pretty much useless throughout. I wish Alisha would replace her instead.
LOL Edna teasing Mikleo. Mibo Mibo Mibo.
Nice to see more focus on Alisha. Don't mess with the princess. Even willing to die.
No surprises that Rose was under the mask.
Sorey purifying the hellion human.
To the battlefield.
"I’ve set myself to become the King of the Pirates…and if I die trying…then at least I tried!" Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)
This AlishaxRose goodness, they're setting them up perfectly, at this rate you don't need Alisha's story animated to ship them together♥ And it keeps her away from Sorey
They're skipping lots of stuff to get to the Basin ASAP, I'm going to guess the final episode will be sometime like right after the Basin incident before next cour?
Skeeturz said: They're skipping lots of stuff to get to the Basin ASAP, I'm going to guess the final episode will be sometime like right after the Basin incident before next cour?
The top brass back at the capital is planning on starting a war with the neighbors to get their supplies because they need some. And Alisha is determined to stop this war from ever happening. War will lead to killing which will lead to more killing which will lead to all sorts of bad stuff ultimately resulting in a whole lot of malevolence which will be anything but good. Alisha plans on going as far as to tell her men to drop their weapons in front of the enemy. And even if they attack and kill one person, they won't fight back. Rose is out for Alisha's head because they don't want Alisha dragging in everyone down because of her ideals. But Alisha shows her resolve that even if she has to become the one sacrifice, she will.
And Sorey is experiencing purifying a hellion formed from a human engulfed by malevolence. He takes on all the malevolence which takes a toll on his body. Lailah stops him from going to the battlefield because that is a place filled with malevolence and Sorey might not be able to handle it. But, similar to what Alisha is thinking, Sorey has the same thing in mind. Wars will only lead to more malevolence and humans turned hellions and must be stopped. So Sorey will be going to try and stop the war with the neighbors.

Hmm, I faintly remember floating items in the game though. Or maybe I'm wrong 🤔 Hm.
Another Ufotable series spouting about ideals...Oh boy, here we go again...
They truly couldn't make this worse and more of a bore even if they wanted to. As mediocre as the game was, at least it had a serviceable combat system to justify its existence. This is simply terrible on practically every front.
