Okay, let me see if I understand the exact meaning of this.

Starting around 12:21, the blonde woman says,

In other words, Genshiken members are not just dependent on porn, they are not willing (or possibly lack the ability to) substitute normal porn for ero-doujinshi. Thus, they're not just obsessed with their hobby, they're both obsessed and sexually committed to their hobby. Shaming of identifiable, sexually committed subcultures is not unusual. Consider what would happen if a pair a gay men made a habit of strolling around a conservative American town in bondage gear, and compare the probable reaction with equally gay men who were more or less "in the closet" in the same community.

Considering that international condom companies claim that Japan has a very low rate of actual sexual intercourse, it's not surprising that a lot of Japanese adults are dependent on porn. Considering that Hello Kitty vibrators are sold, I don't think this situation is limited to men.

I don't have first-hand knowledge of Japan, but I suspect a lot of people might use ero-doujinshi without being identifiable otaku. A teen or young adult who keeps assorted ero-doujinshi with the rest of a porn collection but doesn't visibly obsess about manga/anime/cosplay is probably regarded as an ordinary porn user rather than as an otaku. In particular, a woman with a stack of yaoi porn but no other notable distinctions is probably regarded as non-otaku.

So I don't know if I'm understanding this episode, but I think that's the message -- that the shame of being an otaku is largely the shame of being part of an indentifiable sexual subculture.

Am I misunderstanding?

Good...look forward to the OVAs and then the second season. There are some really good laughs for the first season but for some reason I feel like something is missing...don't know what.

That was a great first season, a very enjoyable show that gave me insight into otaku's. Good show.

The show has it's good parts but there were some slow moments as well. If this was 2004 i would think it was a sorta okay ending, though you can't do much about that with this series, but thankfully the OVA and second season are out from when i started watching.

As in doujinshi for male readers.......

Ahh, I liked this episode, good to see the club room opened up again, and now I cant wait for the OVA's, hopefully set in spring and the start of Sasahara's third year!

Nice!

I loved this show, but I pretty much hated Saki more than anything. It wasn't enough to make me stop watching, but I did sufficiently rage whenever I saw her face. Whenever she'd show signs of improvement, she'd regress back to her usual evil self and instead of punching her in the snatch like she deserved, everyone just laughed nervously and apologized to her. All the while they're all stressed out as they anticipate her ruining everything. No. Not cool. That woman deserved to have her face punched in many times over.

It's okay though. Madarame made everything completely worthwhile and I hope he continues to do so in the next season.

For a final episode, this ep was surprisingly filled with lots of closure/ending of certain habits, such as: Kousaka no longer playing Guilty Gear, Saki quits smoking, them reviewing the apparent last ep of Kujian, Madarame resigns as chairman, and also the last time we see the original club chairman. Overall, it was good (though I thought it'd be a bigger twist to have Saki take up the role as club chairman, though prolly not possible given she's still a bitch about otaku culture lol)

Am I the only one who couldn't figure out who the main character the series was?

Heh, maybe I was blazing through this series. Anyways, not bad but character development could be done better for the main protagonist which I could barely tell. Seems like Kasukabe is the main character despite being a dominant girl. Well at any rate, not too bad.

7/10 for season 1.

Where did you get that statistics stuffs from? I know Japan has a low PILL usage but a high condom usage instead. There is no indication of low sexual activities.

That's how slice-of-life flicks end. It can't be any other way since it doesn't really have a storyline anyway.

Bored out of my mind with this show. Very little character development and lackluster OST. Maybe that was the point of the show, to just show the club's adventures but they could have at least had a little character development. Saki, I suppose, did grow to understand her new friends (if she'd even call them that). I don't think I'm gonna watch anymore of this.

I think Saki represents all those people that you really hope would understand your hobby and the attraction that things like anime, manga, games and plamos have for you. Let's face it, despite Big Bang Theory and a few other mainstream hits geek/otaku culture is still pretty exotic for a lot of people. In fact most of the audience would probably consider the main characters in BBT weird exotic comic exaggerations, where we probably recognize ourselves and our friends in Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard. Genshiken is not just a slice of life show, it's a slice of our lives. Even the first chairman's research is surprisingly close to the truth (I presented a paper on identity, subcultures and online communities--early geocities homesteads--when I was doing my doctorate, so his chapter headings/episode titles make perfect sense to me). I'm looking forward to the OVAs and second season.

I don't really like that the focus of the story was so confused. First it's on the generic otaku new kid, then it's on the blondish chick for the rest of the anime untill the end where it gets back to that guy. Overall a truly average anime. I would have loved to see more of the first chairman though.

Kohsaka was suddenly a very caring BF there for Saki. And Madarame in the room! Waaa... so awkward. But anyway, good series overall. Not that great but it's pretty entertaining that I even finished it in less than a day (some series will actually take me more days)..

Nice ending, though they mixed several different chapters together. But they managed to capture that bittersweet ending of manga volume had which is great. Something ends yet something begins... Off to the Comiket!

And Ogiue in the ED, yay! Can't wait for seeing OVAs, KujiUn and season 2 :)

7/10 for this season animation as manga is a lot better.
