It was interesting to see a Shinma that wasn't shy. The Shinma in this episode killed several at a time in public and stirred up a lot of chaos.
That ending was definitely bizarre.
Good episode.

I get the impression they were going for commentary on Japanese salarymen and the metaphor of spending decades chipping away at solid stone is pretty good but like he story about the yakuza who got a new face, the ideas here are crowded out by Miyu's involvement and end up not amounting to much.

If they were just going for another critique of Japanese work culture there would've been no need for the inclusion of so many weird elements. They could've just gone the way of Kino's Journey with its very obvious commentary, none of which included a giant Buddhist statue and buildings turning into sand.

As pretentious as it is, this episode reminds me of "God is dead". This architect is trying to substitute religion with work. He's trying to pour all his spiritual energy into constructing a city, but it's a twisted one, one that is underneath an actual city. In the actual city, things turn to sand, as in built upon pillars of sand--- it is of little actual substance compared to the statue of the buddha, which is rock solid. The shinma is able to exploit his inner need for religion by conflating building faith with constructing the city. But just like buying shoes that will never fit, all that work will never be spiritually satisfying.

The episode also comments on the sterile coldness of a fast paced modern society, with everyone just rushing to the train (and there's more train imagery at the railroad). The train is representative of the constant hustle and bustle of the city. The speed at which things are done is tempered by the fact that the things being constructed seem to be thin and insubstantial--- just as easily as they crumble like sand, they're erected the next day. Everyone's become numb to it all.

You can say the emphasis on going back to tradition and spirituality over a soulless capitalist society is a bit heavy handed but at the same time it's not like the episode was beating you over the head with it. The nuance of its point is not just that people have lost touch with religion, but that they have substituted religion with work, which explains why no one feels they have a need for religion.

I'm still curious as to whether the statue was another Shinma or not.
I get the spider Shinma could transform the buildings into sand but animating a statue seem to be pretty different. Reiha also seemed to think it was the Shinma.
Considering how Shinmas tend to appear and his link to the statue, I don't see why the statue couldn't be one (except that well, two Shinmas linked to the same person)
Anyways, we don't get to know much about this episode's main Shinma since she turns into a non talking spider. Oh well.

Also not that this is ever relevant in those kind of animes, but that would probably be the point where the supernatural is exposed for sure.
Building just don't turn into sands like that (and it's not like a collapse, their entire mass really turned into sands).

As always, a cool but a weird episode.
But I still don't understand the link between the spider spirit and the salaryman/statue spirit
beware of crappy engrish

For the first time in this series I find this episode very confusing, what was the connection between the spider woman shinma, the salary man and the buddha statue shinma? Probably the spider shinma somehow brainwashed the man to build/carve some buildings/statues? But what for, if she destroys them? Also the statue destroyed the underground, presumably killed some people and nobody bats an eye? Not much was explained, things happened, the end.

@Rengee
it was implied at some point that the dude died in a fire at the temple he used to be at with that other old man he met at the newspaper stand. so he must have died for real, then the Shinma brought him back from the dead to do her dirty work of building her nest. the statue was apparently at his temple. yeah, it was unclear about exactly how he came back or what happened to him at the end though, open to interpretation
