----------------------------------------
“My life exists so I can be me…! I come first, so just to live longer when my consciousness is clouded and I don’t understand what’s going on… Is the height of folly…!” In this way, Akagi spoke about how he viewed his body and his life as a vehicle. It’s understandable, his vehicle is breaking down. A vehicle which has the purpose to be Akagi Shigeru, unable to allow him to do as he wants to do and live how he wants to live, is useless. I just knew he’d responded by acknowledging his own narrow mindedness, as he did with his bias earlier. He stated he never believed the notion of inherent value in being alive. This has been argued by Fukumoto in other texts as well, that to be human is more than surviving. You have to do something with that life. And Akagi is losing that functional beauty that Soga spoke of. He really did say “enough” this chapter, as well as a line that made me think One Poker-hen and surprised me so much I choked for a brief moment.

Ten is struggling. Much weight is on his shoulders. Being the final and most likely person to save Akagi means there is no one to rely on. If he fails, Akagi is dead. You saw it getting to him, that even if he agreed initially to let Akagi die, it’s harder than it sounds. With that final drink serving as a countdown to his death, and goodbye’s being shared, it looks like Akagi will get his way. Harada seems like he was right though, in Akagi’s eyes appear a sense of sentimentality to me. He’s a man who wanted to see his friends before he would go, who said he’d regret missing out on that.

“I’ll get to die as myself…! That’s enough…!”
