----------------------------------------
No one is saving Akagi, it’s the other way around. Akagi has been helping Kanamitsu’s conscience, teaching Ginji how to die, and teaching Hiroyuki and Harada how to live. This time in a way more than the others, this chapter was written in a way that reminded me of a Socratic dialogue. It encompassed Akagi breaking down all of Hiroyuki’s beliefs and forcing him to look at the safety net that has been making him suffer, normality.

On the way there, Hiroyuki tried to fight it, asserting that he can’t do anything like Akagi can, to which Akagi responded even if so, it has nothing to do with living. Seen best with the so-called mediocre who can thrive with a spark, making me think of the useless failure of a caveman who fights and dies a hero nonetheless. But even if so, the easy criticism follows, it sucks to be hurt! To which Akagi said not to see it like that, being hurt is an annoyance but it is also key to knowing we are alive, all movement starts with pain tying all the way back to those so-called genius’s Sawada spoke about, something which makes me want to reread that chapter. But importantly, “there isn’t a single winner who wasn’t a loser at the start.” When urging Hiroyuki to forget about winning and losing and to be okay failing, he exposed that safety net. That if Hiroyuki can at least live a "proper" life, he doesn’t need to face the pain and fear of failure, and the solution;
Just let yourself become a worthless person.
Those ideas of normalcy or a 'proper' life or a 'proper' person are but dark clouds, an illusion which lulls us into dying while we are alive. For Harada, it was his success which negated him, but in a large way, it was also a fear of failure that he had to address as he had to protect his piled up success.

I’d like to add that this definitely gives more strength to the last chapter, suggesting that Hiroyuki should bet on winning, it was said again here, “don’t decide that you’re not going to win”. Further, the seriousness in logic and trying to keep life according to plan is exactly why one would fear failure and not take the chance. To everyone reading this, let’s paddle away from so-called proper and towards life.

I think it’s crucial to note that every one of the Fukumoto protagonists I have read so far, be it Kaiji, Gai, Kurosawa, or Ten live on their own terms. Knowing how Akagi is, I can wager he was that way as a kid too. The great’s have all agreed through their actions. Also, Akagi suggesting the winners aren’t always the ones who say they enjoy games made me want to read Pen-chan as I think that’s what that series is all about. Perhaps Pen-chan fits the bill as well.
