I realized a few days ago that Ten and Harada share a dynamic very much like Kiryu and Ryuji from Yakuza 2. It goes so far that I had to wonder if this is a known trope or dual archetype. In Yakuza if I recall it’s dragon versus dragon rather than dragon versus tiger however outside of that they are similar in their characters, in the way they contrast but also how they can see eye to eye with each other, and even to some degree aesthetically.

Anyways, this chapter was all about 2 player mahjong and its rules. Separated in stage A and stage B, the first stage is akin to what one would expect, it becomes a game of racing to tenpai. However, stage B becomes interesting. It becomes separated into attacker and defender like a soccer penalty kick. The defender tries to predict the wait that the attacker has chosen with two tiles and if they guess correctly then it’s over. But, if they guess wrong the attacker draws 5 times and this cycle resets until they are out of tiles. As Hiroyuki eventually mentioned, one will want to make a hand as fast as possible yet they cannot make it obvious which will slow them down. Two smaller rules were that dealer is a position that is chosen off of a dice roll and after that held until one loses and in this situation it is one of no downsides.

Under the right circumstances, it would be a wonderful game of skill, but with the time limit it is also one of immense luck. As always I adore the way Fukumoto makes luck sound so appealing. For if one is consistently lucky it may be called intuition, and even if not, it can be seen as fate, as the goddess of victory blessing oneself, as a revelation coming, as a test of one’s caliber or a test of which of these two men shine brighter. It’s something that can be felt, it can be tangible, perhaps even harnessed. And by writing luck in this way, as cheesy as it is when you abstract it, it makes me wish to adopt this kind of thought because respecting that someone had the goddess of luck steal your win away is so much more fun than letting out an exasperated sigh and suggesting “uggg you got lucky”.

Lastly, I love Ten this chapter. The way he thought about this game to see what Harada was thinking, and in the way he showed consideration for Hiroyuki and Hiroyuki showed faith back to him. Ten and Harada are the only players now, Soga and Hiroyuki should be done!

This sounds really fun to play in theory! I play "2-player-mahjong" with my mom sometimes, but we just use "normal" rules, don't allow chi, and stop after someone made 24 discards. We'll have to try out this variation some time, too.
